'Canada just got played': US and Mexico reach agreement in bilateral trade talks

In what was the biggest economic news of the day, Donald Trump concluded bilateral trade negotiations with Mexico, a deal which he called the US-Mexico Trade Agreement (profiled previously) and which will replace the trilateral NAFTA which has - for now at least - been scrapped until Canada also comes to the negotiating table and hammers out an agreement with the US (read: concedes), from a position of weakness and virtually no negotiating capital.

There were some odd twists in the announced deal, for example the agreement on the "sunset clause", which as some pointed out is strange as it is a "trilateral matter" - i.e., one which would involve Canada - and it was unclear how it squares with the US-Mexico pledge that their talks were purely on bilateral issues.

Comment: More from RT: US trade deal with Mexico smashes NAFTA & puts squeeze on Canada
The news forced Canadian officials to rapidly arrange a meeting with their US partners. Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland reportedly cut short her diplomatic trip to Europe to go to Washington on Tuesday for trade talks. A spokesman for the foreign minister said Canada will sign the new accord only if it is good for the country.

Under the current conditions, Ottawa essentially faces a take-it-or-leave-it offer, which is based on the US-Mexico trade pact. Though details of the new agreement are still unclear, it will predictably become less profitable for Canada than under NAFTA, which was condemned by the US president as the "single worst deal ever approved."

Though the US and Canada have traditionally enjoyed good trading relations, some 75 percent of Canada's exports are reportedly bound for the US with only 15 percent of American exports destined for Canada. American businesses could easily divert their exports away from Canada if trade barriers increase, according to research carried out by ScienceDirect. Moreover, Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on imports of Canadian-made vehicles if Ottawa doesn't relent.

"I think with Canada, frankly, the easiest thing we can do is to tariff their cars coming in. It's a tremendous amount of money and it's a very simple negotiation. It could end in one day and we take in a lot of money the following day," said Trump.

The draft deal reached by the US and Mexico boosted American stocks to record highs on Monday.
Nothing will change until Congress approves this, next year at the earliest.

Fake News purveyor Washington Post claims Trump tells Japan's PM 'I remember Pearl Harbor' but Tokyo denies the claim

Japan denies that US President Donald Trump launched a surprise attack against Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by bringing up Pearl Harbor during trade talks, contrary to a report by the Washington Post.

The episode described by the Washington Post allegedly happened during a Trump-Abe meeting in June to discuss trade. Trump is not happy with the trade deficit and wants Tokyo to consent to a deal more favorable to the US.

According to the newspaper, at one point during the meeting, the US president said: "I remember Pearl Harbor." He then launched into a "blistering critique of Japan's economic policies." The piece is mostly based on the words of a number of anonymous sources in the US State Department, the White House, and the Japanese government. It details the personal relations between Trump and Abe, whether or not their personal chemistry mitigated the tensions over trade, and whether Japan would be less willing to turn a blind eye to American trade restrictions in the future.

Hungarian PM Orban calls for deporting all illegal migrants to Africa

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that illegal immigrants in Italy must be deported back to Africa instead of relocated to other places in Europe and that Hungary is willing to help with the process.

Orban was speaking during a press conference following a meeting with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who has come under fire in recent days for refusing to allow more than 100 African migrants to disembark from a boat docked in Catania.

Asked whether migrants should be relocated from Italy to other EU countries, Orban said that they should be sent back home.

Comment: Orban has hailed Salvini as a 'hero' in the fight against to protect Europe's borders. RT reports:
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has revealed himself as a huge fan of Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who he called his "hero" in advance of a meeting between the pair in Milan on Tuesday.

Orban did not mince words about his love for Salvini as he left a restaurant in the city ahead of the meeting, saying that the Italian politician is "a companion of destiny" and that he was "very curious" to learn more about his personality. "I'm a great admirer and I have some experiences that I could perhaps share with him. I have that feeling," he said. [...]

As Sicilian prosecutors launched an investigation last week into illegal detention and kidnapping over Salvini's refusal to let migrants disembark from a vessel docked in Catania, Salvini said he was prepared to be arrested and "proud" to defend Italy's borders. The migrants on board were rescued from an overcrowded boat by the coast guard vessel off the island of Lampedusa.

Bruce Ohr exhibits a 'poor memory' during testimony over Trump dossier, Steele ties

Justice Department official Bruce Ohr testified to lawmakers on the House Oversight and Judiciary committees Tuesday about his relationship with former British spy Christopher Steele and his ties to the salacious anti-Trump dossier.

Ohr did not respond to reporter questions as he arrived for the closed-door session, accompanied by two officials.

While lawmakers told reporters that Ohr was being cooperative, Rep. Darrel Issa, R-Calif., said that Ohr "has a poor memory."

"He seems to not remember a lot of details and, you know, poor memories are often claimed by people who want to stick to what they can say and not be caught in perjury," he told Fox News.

Hong Kong newspaper: China building 'military training base' in Afghanistan - Chinese FM denies report

They've got the guns but we've got the numbers...
China has reportedly started to build a training camp in Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, a narrow area that separates Tajikistan from Pakistan, in efforts to improve counterterrorism efforts in the war-torn country.

Sources with knowledge of the matter told the South China Morning Post for an article published Tuesday that once the base is completed, Beijing will dispatch to it hundreds of troops, amounting to at least one battalion. A battalion could consists of more than 500 soldiers, according to the Post.

"Construction of the base has started, and China will send at least one battalion of troops, along with weapons and equipment, to be stationed there and provide training to their Afghan counterparts," one source told the publication.

The official later noted that a completion date for the base was not yet determined and that the base would likely have a slightly different role than that of Beijing's first overseas military base in the East African nation of Djibouti.

Comment: Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying has dismissed this latest report:
"After looking into it, the relevant report is not true," she told a daily news briefing.

"Since the construction and training, this situation, it doesn't exist - it's not true. So anything related naturally is not true," Hua added, dismissing the assertion about China eventually sending its own soldiers.
The rumors are probably not groundless, however. An important meeting was scheduled to take place in Moscow next week, where Taliban representatives agreed in principle to meet with Afghan govt reps. The US, China, Pakistan, India, and Iran were also invited to attend. The US of course rejected this 'interference' out of hand, but it's interesting that Kabul only pulled out when 'the Taliban' (almost certainly counter-insurgency factions of it working indirectly for the US) upped its terror attacks across the country.

Whatever its state of concrete progress, there is clearly impetus coming from Moscow and Beijing to fix the multi-decade blight on the world that is US 'mismanagement of Afghanistan'. The US can only delay that country's long-term political resolution via 'managed terrorism' for so long.

Russia bolsters navy presence in Mediterranean amidst reports of imminent Western-backed false-flag attack in Syria

Russia has dispatched the largest number of naval vessels into Syrian waters since the beginning of its intervention there, amid speculation that the US might be preparing another 'chemical attack' false flag and a missile strike.

Two submarines and at least ten Russian surface warships are currently in the Mediterranean. Many are armed with long-range missiles, such as the frigates Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen, which were photographed transiting the Bosporus from the Black Sea on Friday.

Some outlets, such as the Lebanon-based daily Al-Masdar, report there are seventeen Russian vessels off the Syrian coast, the largest concentration since the beginning of Russian intervention in Syria in September 2015.

Russia has dispatched "substantial naval forces to the Mediterranean, including several ships equipped with modern cruise missiles," NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu told the Israeli daily Haaretz.

Comment: Interestingly enough, to further confirm their point, the US has already started moving cruise missile carriers into the area: US sends more cruise missile carriers to Middle East for strikes against Syria - Russia defense minister

The United States has been building the amount of cruise missile carriers in the Middle East for strikes against government forces in Syria after pre-planned provocation involving the use of chemical weapons in Idlib Province, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told the media on Monday.

"The United States keeps building up the cruise missile carriers group in the Middle East as part of preparations for another provocation in Idlib Province to be presented as an alleged use of chemical weapons," Konashenkov said.

Russian MP urging tactical nuke deployment in Syria in response to new sanctions

The long-running US and Russian proxy war in Syria has been largely forgotten of late, but suddenly snapped back into international headlines with John Bolton's warning Assad and Russia this week that Washington will respond with "greater military force" should claims of a Syrian government chemical attack emerge in Idlib.

In response, Russia subsequently warned of a staged "chemical provocation" coming and it appears a war of words is yet again ratcheting up over Syria, which has the very real potential of turning into an actual war.

It fits a familiar pattern on Syria since Russian intervention at the invitation of President Bashar al-Assad in 2015: just when it appears the jihadists are on the brink of final defeat, and as stability is returning after seven years of grinding war, something happens to bring things right back to the brink of global crisis and escalation.

And now, a senior Russian lawmaker in the Federal Assembly (Duma) has called on his government to draw its own "red lines" while suggesting the use of tactical nuclear weapons against United States forces in Syria.

Comment: The Russian military has deployed an additional battery of Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile systems at its Khmeimim Air Base in Syria, Kommersant newspaper reported on August 28 citing a source in the ministry of defense.

The move, as well as deployment of Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen frigates armed with Kalibr cruise missiles near Syria, comes amid the growing threat of a new US-led missile strike on government facilities in the war-torn country.

Ankara has indicated it will not bow to US demands to terminate deal with Russia over S-400 missile defense systems, calling on fellow NATO member Washington to abandon its "language of threats."

Turkey remains firm in its intention to procure two batches of Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile defense systems, the first one of which is set to be delivered next year, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said on Tuesday.

Calling the purchase of the units "a must for us," Çavuşoğlu pointed out that Turkey had previously sought to buy US-made Patriot missile systems, but the US failed to provide any guarantee that the deal would be approved by the lawmakers.

Russian MoD: White Helmets accompany large delivery of poisonous chemicals to militants in Syria

A large supply of chemicals has been delivered to the militants in Syria's Idlib with the assistance of the White Helmets aid group in order to stage a provocation and blame the Syrian government, Russia's Defense Ministry said.

The Russian military has received information from several sources in Idlib Province that "a large supply of poisonous agents has been brought to the city of Saraqib on two trucks from the village of Afs," Major-General Aleksey Tsygankov, head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria, said in a statement.

The chemicals were delivered to an arms depot, used by the militant group Ahrar al-Sham, "accompanied by the eight members of the White Helmets organization," Tsygankov said, adding that the cargo was met by two high-ranked Ahrar al-Sham commanders.

Comment: Syria's permanent mission to the United Nations has presented documents proving terrorists' plans to carry out a chemical weapons attack in the Syrian province of Idlib and put the blame on Damascus, Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar Jaafari said at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
According to him, the documents make it clear that the Jabhat al-Nusra terror group (outlawed in Russia) and some other terrorists pledged readiness to use chemical weapons against civilians in Idlib in order to put the blame on Syrian authorities and justify a foreign military aggression.
