Greek economist Varoufakis slams Donald Tusk's Brexit tweet

Former Greek finance minister/economist Yanis Varoufakis responded to a tweet by European Council president Donald Tusk's on the Brexit.

Mr Tusk's tweet said: "I've been wondering what that special place in hell looks like, for those who promoted #Brexit, without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely."

Mr Varoufakis responded on Twitter the next day.

"Probably very similar to the place reserved for those who designed a monetary union without a proper banking union and, once the banking crisis hit, transferred cynically the bankers' gigantic losses onto the shoulders of the weakest taxpayers," he said.

Mr Varoufakis served as Greek finance minister from January to July 2015 when the left wing Syriza party came to power. He led negotiations with Greece's creditors, but resigned following the referendum where the Greek people rejected troika's terms that were implemented nonetheless.

Comment: Varoufakis is uniquely placed to comment on the EU's attitude toward the people impacted by its policies. He was an eyewitness to the destruction of Greece's economy at the hands of Brussels and the IMF.

Venezuela's Maduro pens open letter to US citizens: 'Washington willing to send its sons to die in absurd war'

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has slammed Washington's belligerent rhetoric towards his country in an open letter addressed to the American people.

Maduro published an image of the letter on his official Twitter account, saying it would be delivered to the White House, demanding respect for Venezuela's "inalienable right to peace."

In the letter, Maduro denounces US President Donald Trump's aggressive statements against him - in which he has branded Maduro an illegitimate dictator, as well as hinting at military intervention.

Comment: Invading Venezuela has been on the table even before Trump. Between the mineral wealth of the country and it's geopolitical location, the US will be loathe to give up its quest to subjugate the country. Maduro has commented that the US is setting itself up for another Vietnam-like quagmire, and he is right.

Green dreams: Congressional Democrats plan for a massive transformation of society

Congressional Democrats have proposed a 'Green New Deal' plan that aims to completely transform America's economy and society within 10 years to combat climate change and create social justice. Critics were nonplussed.

The ambitious proposal, presented on Thursday by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) and Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), lays out a plan to "mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War 2" to achieve "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions" while creating "economic prosperity for all."


This is a massive transformation of our society," the materials explaining the proposed congressional resolution said. The Green New Deal (GND) wants to transition the US to "100% clean and renewable energy" while guaranteeing jobs with a family-sustaining wage, family and medical leave, vacations, and retirement security and free higher education, healthy food, healthcare, "adequate housing," and economic security "for all who are unable or unwilling to work," among other things.

Comment: The 10 most insane requirements of the Far Left's Green New Deal:
It is not hyperbole to contend that GND is likely the most ridiculous and un-American plan that's ever been presented by an elected official to voters. Not merely because it would necessitate a communist strongman to institute, but also because the societal cost are unfathomable. The risible historic analogies Markey and Ocasio-Cortez rely on, the building of the interstate highway system or moon landing, are nothing are but trifling projects compared to a plan that overhauls modernity by voluntarily destroying massive amounts of wealth and technology. That is the GND.

Republicans with the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Tuesday submitted a motion to immediately publish dozens of witness transcripts in the Russia Trump investigation that were turned over for declassification review, stating it is "part of the process of publishing them for the American people to see." Though the transcripts are unclassified, the Committee had sent them to the Intelligence Community for a review as a precautionary measure.

Let's do it. Make the witness transcripts public and let the cards fall where they may. The committee already voted to make the documents public on a similar motion in September, 2018, when it was then led by House Republicans.

The Republican motion was in response to now Democratic Chairman Adam Schiff's proposal to turn over all the witness interviews to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office for review. Those witness interviews, however, are already available to Mueller.

President Donald Trump predicted Wednesday that the Islamic State group will soon have lost all the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria.

He said the U.S. will not relent in fighting remnants of the extremist organization despite his decision to withdraw American troops from Syria over the objections of some of his most senior national security advisers.

The president told representatives of a 79-member, U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS that the militants held a tiny percentage of the vast territory they claimed as their "caliphate."

"It should be formally announced sometime, probably next week, that we will have 100 percent of the caliphate," Trump said.

Germany bans Facebook from spying & hoarding users' data without their explicit consent

The German antitrust authority has banned Facebook from combining user data across its apps and third-party sites without users' consent, accusing the company of coercively taking advantage of its "market dominance."

Competition watchdog Bundeskartellamt blocked the social media giant from merging user data collected through Instagram, WhatsApp and the millions of third-party websites that track users on behalf of Facebook through the "like" and "share" buttons, with those users' Facebook profiles - unless they explicitly opt in to the tracking.

"In future, Facebook will no longer be allowed to force its users to agree to the practically unrestricted collection and assigning of non-Facebook data to their Facebook user accounts," said Andreas Mundt, Bundeskartellamt's president, in a press release on Thursday.

UN-led inquiry finds Khashoggi a 'victim of brutal killing, perpetrated by Saudi officials'

A UN-led inquiry into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi has determined that the dissident journalist was the victim of a "brutal and premeditated killing" which was "planned and perpetrated" by Saudi Arabian officials.

According to the UN inquiry statement, Saudi Arabia "seriously undermined" Turkey's efforts to investigate Khashoggi's murder, which took place at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 last year.

UN investigator Agnès Callamard said her team had reviewed "chilling and gruesome audio material" of the murder, which had been obtained by Turkish intelligence officials.

A leaked audio of a conversation between Venezuelan businessman, Lorenzo Mendoza, and former politician, Ricardo Hausman, has revealed Venezuela's political and business opposition to be seeking collaboration with the IMF (International Monetary Fund) ahead of the country's parliamentary elections on December 6th.

In the phone conversation, leaked in Venezuela last Wednesday, both men speak about the possibility of IMF intervention in the Venezuelan economy and frequently refer to each other as "mate".

Mendoza currently ranks as one the wealthiest businessmen in the world and controls key areas of the Venezuelan economy, such as the production of cornflour, beer and other household staples. Government supporters hold him responsible for the widespread shortage of key products, which they say is an attempt to destabilise the administration of current leftwing President Nicolas Maduro.

Israel licenses the violation of Lebanon's water border for oil exploration

Israel has breached Lebanon's waters by licensing a company to "exploit an area" for oil and gas near disputed borders, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said on Wednesday, reports Reuters.

The two countries have an unresolved maritime border dispute over a sea zone of about 860 sq km (330 square miles) which extends along the edge of three of Lebanon's energy blocks.

US diplomats mediated between them last year after a spike in tensions that also involved a row over a border wall Israel built and over Iran-backed Hezbollah's growing arsenal.

Provoking an "incident" or a false flag would be the best way to keep the U.S. in the Middle East forever, for Israel's benefit. Philip Giraldi warns that "the current lineup of administration hotheads is so devoid of scruples that it might well be planning to either provoke or false-flag the United States into the longed-for war against Iran."

The White House decision to withdraw American troops from Syria as soon as possible may or may not be on track depending on whom one believes. But one thing that is for sure is that the recent suicide bomber attack in Manbij, Syria, which killed four Americans and has been attributed to ISIS, has inspired the opponents of the drawdown to renew their claim that the terrorist group is still an active threat to the United States. President Donald Trump is now being subjected to heavy bipartisan and media pressure to reverse his decision.

It is perhaps a coincidence that the attack should take place not long after the White House announcement of the withdrawal, thereby giving ammunition to those who wish to stay in Syria, admittedly illegally, for the foreseeable future. Or is it perhaps something else? Why, one must ask, did ISIS do something against its own interests by attacking Americans and thereby increasing the odds that U.S. armed forces would remain in Syria? Wouldn't it have been preferable to just let the American military leave, thereby eliminating one enemy from the playing field?
