Iran's Foreign Ministry says an Iranian oil tanker has been damaged in an "attack" in the Red Sea. "Those behind the attack are responsible for the consequences of this dangerous adventure, including the dangerous environmental pollution caused," ministry spokesman Abbas Musavi said on October 11.

Musavi said the vessel was struck twice in the span of half an hour, and an investigation was under way. The explosion, which is yet to be independently verified, comes amid heightened tensions in the region.

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) earlier said the Sabiti oil tanker, said to carry 1 million barrels of oil, was hit by two missiles off the coast of Saudi Arabia. "All the ship's crew are safe and the ship is stable too," NITC added.

The hull of the vessel was hit by two separate explosions about 100 kilometers off the Saudi port city of Jeddah, according to the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC). "There is no fire" aboard the Sabiti and the ship is "completely stable," the statement said.

Comment: Update: Sputnik, 11/10/2019: Iranian oil tanker hit two times
A vessel, operated by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), reportedly caught fire 100 km (about 60 miles) from the Saudi port city of Jeddah. According to local media, the explosion inflicted heavy damages on the vessel, while oil spilt into the Red Sea.

According to ISNA, citing an official from National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), the route of its oil tanker has been changed. "It is still in the Red Sea but its route will change ... No help was offered to assist by any country".

Refinitiv shipping data showed that the status of the tanker was "underway using engine" with its destination set as Larak, an island off the Iranian coast.

The company said that the blasts were "probably caused by missile strikes".

Update: RT, 11/10/2019: Tehran confirms 2 projectiles
Tehran has confirmed that an Iranian-owned oil tanker, the Sinopa, was attacked in the Red Sea, and that the mysterious strike caused an oil spill.

"Those behind the attack are responsible for the consequences of this dangerous adventure, including the dangerous environmental pollution caused," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi told state media.
Update: RT, 11/10/2019: Explosions rock Iranian tanker
The incident is being treated as a terrorist attack, local media says.

Update: RT, 11/10/2019: Oil prices surge
The price of crude oil rose sharply on Friday morning after Iranian officials said that two rockets had struck an Iranian tanker traveling through the Red Sea.

International benchmark Brent rose over two percent to $60.34 per barrel by 7:30am GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained almost two percent to $54.60 per barrel.

"Spare capacity remains fragile and with supply chain vulnerability a worrying concern at virtually every Middle East oil field, traders continue to hedge supply risk premium," Stephen Innes, Asia Pacific market strategist at AxiTrader, told Reuters.

The oil tanker Sinopa was hit by two explosions at 5:00am and 5:20am local time.
Update: Bloomberg, 11/10/2019: Iranian oil tanker attacked, tensions remain high
A spokesman for the National Iranian Tanker Company, initially said in a call with Iran's Press TV that the missiles probably came from the direction of Saudi Arabia. NITC later withdrew that claim in a statement.

The Sabiti was fully laden with crude and heading toward the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, according to Florian Thaler, chief executive of data analytics firm OilX. On its previous voyages it has carried Iranian crude to the East Mediterranean he said.

According to tanker-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the vessel was under way using its engine and heading south at a speed of 9.6 knots as of 8:45 a.m. London time. Its destination was listed as Larak, an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz.

The attack on the Sabiti came a day before Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to visit Tehran for talks on how to reduce tensions with Saudi Arabia, Iranian lawmaker and member of the parliamentary commission for national security, Heshmattolah Falahatpisheh, said in an interview with the semi-official Iranian Labour News Agency.

The Pentagon said on Friday that it's sending more U.S. forces to the Middle East to "assure and enhance the defense of Saudi Arabia" against Iran. Overall about 3,000 personnel are being deployed or having their missions extended in the region.

Wrongfully convicted ex-CIA official says Ukraine intelligence official is no whistleblower

John Kiriakou CIA whistleblower
Former CIA agent, John Kiriakou
A former CIA official who exposed waterboarding practices on war on terror detainees isn't a fan of the anonymous whistleblower in the Ukraine case undergirding the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

"I don't think he's a whistleblower. I think he's an anonymous source and there's a big difference," said John Kiriakou, who served two years in prison over the revelations from the Bush administration, becoming the first CIA officer to be convicted of disclosing classified information to a reporter.

"If this whistleblower were truly a whistleblower, he would be happy to testify in open session before the [House] Intelligence Committee or whatever other committee wanted his testimony," Kiriakou told the Washington Examiner. "He is not an undercover officer. Therefore there is no reason to hide his identity from the White House or further from the American people."

US forces unlikely to withdraw from Syria this year

© AP/Syrian Democratic ForcesSyrian Democratic Forces
Notwithstanding President Donald Trump's announcement of the deal with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to tactically withdraw US forces from specific locations in occupied north-east Syria - and in consequence to leave the Syrian Kurds to their fate - the departure of US forces from Syria is highly implausible. These US forces have established several military bases and airports, offering logistic and operational support to US forces in Iraq and to the Israeli Air Force. Abandoning the occupation of north-east Syria would result in giving up a strategic location in the Middle East, a move that the US administration is not expected to take this year. Moreover, the international support the Kurds (in Syria and Iraq) enjoy may well protect them from being attacked on all fronts by jihadists and pro-Turkish militants. However, the interest of the US is to look after its NATO ally rather than prioritise Syrian Kurdish militants who fought and were paid money and military hardware in exchange for their services - as Trump has explained. This means a limited Turkish operation is expected (and has indeed started) notwithstanding all the complications and conflicts of interest Turkey will be facing with its Russian and Iranian allies.

The US has always been very clear that its own interests prevail above those of any other country or group. It has business partners rather than strategic allies. In this context it would be normal for the US administration to drop the Syrian Kurdish militants. After all, Trump seems to believe they have served their purpose: they are mercenaries who have been paid for a certain job - the task of eliminating the "Islamic State" (ISIS) - which is now done.

But the Syrian Kurds are threatening to withdraw from the protection of over 50 jails where they have locked away around 11,000 ISIS militants. They also control al-Hol camp, with over 80,000 ISIS family members. This move will never happen: the Kurds will be exterminated by the same ISIS if they set them free. Already the Al-Basel military base in Raqqah was targeted by two suicide attacks on Tuesday night, followed by around 50 other Jihadists attempting to capture the base.

Flashback Key facts about the Kurdish-Israeli relationship

israel kurd flag
© doganerol1
The Kurdish-Israeli relationship has matured significantly. Since at least the 1960s, Israel has provided intermittent security assistance and military training to the Kurds. This served mostly as an anti-Saddam play - keeping him distracted as Israel fought two wars against coordinated Arab neighbors - but mutual understanding of their respective predicaments also bred an Israeli-Kurdish affinity.

All signs point to this security cooperation continuing today. Israeli procurement of affordable Kurdish oil not only indicates a strengthening of economic ties, but also an Israeli lifeline to budget-starved Erbil that suggests a strategic bet on the Kurds in an evolving region.

The people closest to the Jews from a genetic point of view may be the Kurds, according to the results of a recent study by Hebrew University.

Comment: Israel wants to have a puppet state all its own, and failing that, retain their allegiance as a shield from Iran, Iraq and Turkey. Why should Israel fight, when a proxy is so much more convenient?

What was Biden up to in Romania?

Gabriel Popoviciu

US president Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani dragged Romania's name into the scandal between Trump and former vice president Joe Biden but left everyone guessing what could be Joe Biden's controversial connection to Romania.

"I haven't got to Romania. Wait until we get to Romania," Giuliani said in a Fox News interview over the weekend, without going into details.

Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, who is now under scrutiny for his dealings in Ukraine and China during his father's term as US vice president, apparently also had business interests in Romania, according to the local media. Hunter Biden was involved in real estate business in Bucharest and allegedly tried to lobby in favor of local real estate tycoon Gabriel Popoviciu in 2017, before and after he was sentenced to jail in a high-profile corruption case, sources close to Popoviciu told local G4Media.ro.

In May this year, reports by Fox News and the New York Times mentioned Hunter Biden's connection to Gabriel Popoviciu.

"In addition to his work in Ukraine for the energy company Burisma, Hunter Biden advised a Romanian businessman with ties to the United States, Gabriel Popoviciu, whose real estate dealings had come under investigation, according to people familiar with the arrangement, which has not been previously reported. The investigation, which came as the United States and its allies were pushing Romania to clamp down on corruption, led to Mr. Popoviciu's conviction and a prison sentence," reads an article in the New York Times.

However, there is no evidence so far that Hunter Biden tried to leverage his father's influence to help Popoviciu or any other wrongdoing.

Comment: Nice, upstanding friends Hunter has, eh?

Elite power and why America is so corrupt

cash
Americans don't do it voluntarily, but mainly because they don't understand the way the US system works. Part of that is the nation's legal system; part of it isn't, but is instead international.

Regardless of whether or not today's United States is a democracy, our legal system possesses two features that make corruption especially difficult to prosecute to conviction, and this difficulty is extreme and makes such convictions extremely rare at the top, amongst members of Congress, and Presidents, and former federal officials, and billionaires, so that people at that level need to be extremely stupid in order to be convictable for whatever corruption they might do. (And such extreme stupidity is virtually non-existent amongst that elite, most powerful, group. So, they get away with it. There is absolutely nothing to stop them.) Consequently, corruption is rampant at the top in America.

Both of these two domestic, US, features apply also to some lesser extent in every other country; and, at the end, I'll describe the exacerbating factor that makes the situation especially bad in the United States โ€” the international factor, which intensifies America's corruption-problem.

Reason Number One why Americans favor corruption is that (especially at the top) corruption is, to a large extent โ€” and very unlike lower-class crimes of direct violence โ€” a judgment-call, largely political, and therefore specifically a partisan matter to judge. Anything that's "partisan" is especially difficult to produce a unanimous verdict, which is what would be required for a conviction. Consequently, an individual of high status within the elite will be granted by his group or "party" every benefit of every possible doubt. This is likely to protect any elite person from being convicted.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said he did not consider resorting to military force to retake the Donbass region and Crimea.

The Ukrainian authority has defended, on television, the preservation of the lives of Ukrainians rather than armed conflict.

"I, as president, am not ready to lose our people, so I chose diplomacy. I have always said that if we are talking about people and territories, the first priority is people, while the second is territory. I want try to find a way out of the crisis thanks to the Minsk Agreement and the Normandy Quartet," said Zelensky.

Zelensky stressed that the Ukrainian people did not choose a president to lead them to war.

Comment: He'll have to do something about the neo-Nazis, then.

War, sanctions or deal: Trump says US has 'three choices' with Turkey in Syria - UPDATES

turkish troops
© REUTERS/Rodi Said
US President Donald Trump has laid out three choices for Washington in dealing with Turkey's incursion into Syria, including a "deal" between Ankara and the US-allied Kurdish militias.

Noting that the Kurds and Turkey have been "fighting each other for 200 years" and that no US troops are in the area of Syria under attack by Turkish troops, the US president spelled out the options of his administration on Twitter, seemingly inviting a response from the general public.

One of the options was "send in thousands of troops and win militarily," which he has not been inclined towards in the past. Another was to "hit Turkey very hard" with sanctions and financially. The last, not mentioned before, was to "mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!"

Asked which option he preferred, Trump said "I hope it's going to be the last one."

"I hope we can mediate," he told reporters outside the White House on Thursday. "Turkey knows where I stand."

Comment: For previous updates on the Turkish military operation in northern Syria, see: According to Turkey's foreign minister, Ankara was forced into this military op due to the U.S. supplying weapons to their enemies, the Kurds, in Syria:
"First, the US told us: wait, we will withdraw our forces. We waited, and they did not remove them. Then we agreed on joint patrols, which turned out to be cosmetic in nature. At the same time, they continued to supply the YPG with weapons. We put up with this for a long time, and, finally, our patience came to an end. We made this decision based on the situation in the field," Cavusoglu said, speaking to CNN Turk on Thursday.

The foreign minister also challenged US efforts to prohibit Turkish warplanes from flying over Syrian airspace without its permission.

"The US is saying that without the permission of its coordination center in Qatar, not a single plane will take off. But we are fighting with terrorism here. And there is a decision by the UN on fighting terrorism...We have informed everyone, not because we need permission, but because we are members of a coalition and in order to prevent accidents and clashes. This is Syrian territory, and the US does not have the right to command Syrian airspace, and decide who gets to fly and who doesn't," Cavusoglu said.
He described the weapons supplied as being "sophisticated and heavy":
"And the majority of them have been supplied by the U.S. even three days ago. Trucks full of weapons were supplied by the U.S. to this terrorist organization," he said.

He mocked Washington for supporting a "terrorist organization" instead of Turkey, a "NATO ally."

Speaking about the Turkey's military incursion into Northern Syria, Cavusoglu vowed to take care of Daesh prisoners held in detention camps in Northern Syria after ridding the area of the Kurds.

"Our responsibility is to make sure that they will be held accountable for what they did. And we will make sure that they will not be released," Cavusoglu said.
...
According to the Daily Sabah, Turkey plans to resettle 2 million Syrian refugees in the safe zone after it is cleared of the YPG/PKK presence, but Cavusoglu underscored that Ankara will not force the refugees to return.

"Already, 370,000 of them went back to these two areas [liberated in Turkey's Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch Operations] voluntarily, and we do our best to supply what they need," the Minister said. "It has been nine years we never forced refugees."

In 1998, Syria and Turkey signed the so-called Adana agreement, which obliged Damascus to recognize Kurdish organizations as terrorists and cease all support. Turkey justifies its military incursion into Northern Syria by claiming that Damascus is not in control of its northern territories and therefore it falls upon Ankara to establish its own security. However, in his interview, Cavusoglu underscored that the 1998 agreement is still relevant and should be used as a basis for an eventual political settlement.

"When there is a political settlement in Syria, then we can talk about this," Cavusoglu said.
The US State Department said it is working on ways to negotiate a ceasefire between the Kurds and Turks, a task given to them by Trump. The main goal is to "get this thing stopped":
Commenting on measures that the US could take in the event that Turkey engages in "inhumane and disproportionate" moves against civilians during its military invasion into northeastern Syria, the official said that Washington could impose sanctions on Ankara.

"That would include ethnic cleansing, it would include in particular indiscriminate artillery air and other fires directed at civilian population. That's what we're looking at right now. We haven't seen significant examples of that so far", the official said.
Turkey claims 11 villages have been cleared so far, and they've suffered the death of one soldier. They report 277 PKK-YPG terrorists "neutralized". The Turks expect support from their NATO allies:
"We gave information about the operation to the secretary general and we re-emphasize our expectation for strong solidarity from our allies," Mevlut Cavusoglu told a joint press conference with Stoltenberg.
Putin commented today as follows:
"There's areas in northern Syria where Islamic State's militants have amassed," the Russian president warned at the Commonwealth of Independent States' summit in Turkmenistan.

Such buffer zones were guarded by Syrian Kurds but now "the Turkish army is moving in and the Kurds are abandoning those camps," creating the power vacuum.
They could simply run away. I'm not sure whether the Turkish army could get it under control fast.
As combatting terrorism was high on the agenda at the gathering of the post-Soviet leaders, Putin devoted time to security issues.

Citing an estimate by Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, he said thousands of terrorists have found shelter in northern Syria, where Turkey's Operation Peace Spring is taking place.

Comment: Considering the mysterious attacks on Saudi and Western oil tankers in May and June this year, and the geopolitical context in which the 'Western Order' is attempting to throttle Iran's economic development - and the threat it poses to the US petrodollar system - by isolating it on the world stage, it's clear that last month's attacks on Saudi oil facilities were the next 'progression' in upholding a united Western front against trading with Iran.

And now, today, missiles have been fired at an Iranian tanker in the Red Sea as it sails north near Jeddah, in what appears to be the next Saudi-Western effort to physically contain Iranian oil shipping within the Persian Gulf...

UPDATE 14 Oct 2019

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is threatening to boycott Tuesday's Democratic presidential debate in Ohio, criticizing the Democratic National Committee and corporate media for "rigging" the 2020 election against "the American people" in early voting states.

"I am giving serious consideration to boycotting the next debate on October 15th. I will announce my decision within the next few days," Gabbard said in a video posted on social media Thursday.

Gabbard cited meeting voters in Iowa and New Hampshire who have "expressed to me how frustrated you are that the DNC and corporate media are essentially trying to usurp your role as voters in choosing who our Democratic nominee will be."
