Best of the Web: Russia bans 'LGBT movement'

The Supreme Court of Russia outlawed the "international LGBT public movement" on Thursday, designating it as extremist. The ruling also affects its subsidiaries, the court announced, without naming specific organizations.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this month by the Russian Justice Ministry, argued that "the LGBT movement's" activities qualified it as an "extremist group." Specifically, it has been sowing "social and religious discord" in the country, the ministry claimed.

The hearings took place behind closed doors and lasted over four hours as the case involved more than 20 tomes of material, RIA Novosti reported, citing the Supreme Court's press service. No representatives of the "international LGBT movement" were present during the hearings, with only an attorney for the Justice Ministry in attendance.

Best of the Web: 'The Gospel': how Israel uses AI to select bombing targets in Gaza

© Atef Safadi/EPA‘To claim there’s precision and narrowness of force being exerted is not borne out by the facts,’ said one researcher.
Israel's military has made no secret of the intensity of its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. In the early days of the offensive, the head of its air force spoke of relentless, "around the clock" airstrikes. His forces, he said, were only striking military targets, but he added: "We are not being surgical."

There has, however, been relatively little attention paid to the methods used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to select targets in Gaza, and to the role artificial intelligence has played in their bombing campaign.

As Israel resumes its offensive after a seven-day ceasefire, there are mounting concernsabout the IDF's targeting approach in a war against Hamas that, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, has so far killed more than 15,000 people in the territory.

The IDF has long burnished its reputation for technical prowess and has previously made bold but unverifiable claims about harnessing new technology. After the 11-day war in Gaza in May 2021, officials said Israel had fought its "first AI war" using machine learning and advanced computing.

The latest Israel-Hamas war has provided an unprecedented opportunity for the IDF to use such tools in a much wider theatre of operations and, in particular, to deploy an AI target-creation platform called "the Gospel", which has significantly accelerated a lethal production line of targets that officials have compared to a "factory".

The European Commission became directly involved in contacting social media giants to warn them of their obligations

Ireland was the first member state to trigger an alert under the EU's powerful new legislation on online hate speech in the immediate aftermath of last week's riots in Dublin, RTÉ News has learned.

As a result of the move, the European Commission became directly involved in contacting social media giants such as Meta, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Tik-Tok, Instagram and others within hours of the riots, to warn them of their obligations under the new legislation.

EU sources have also said that the shortage of Irish-speaking moderators among some of the biggest social media firms may have resulted in far-right activists deliberately using Irish in their posts in order to avoid them being removed.

Comment: So the article's main concern is that there weren't enough Gaelic-speaking censors on staff? Where is the outrage at the censoring citizens' free speech??

The Israeli army's expanded authorization for bombing non-military targets, the loosening of constraints regarding expected civilian casualties, and the use of an artificial intelligence system to generate more potential targets than ever before, appear to have contributed to the destructive nature of the initial stages of Israel's current war on the Gaza Strip, an investigation by +972 Magazine and Local Call reveals. These factors, as described by current and former Israeli intelligence members, have likely played a role in producing what has been one of the deadliest military campaigns against Palestinians since the Nakba of 1948.

The investigation by +972 and Local Call is based on conversations with seven current and former members of Israel's intelligence community — including military intelligence and air force personnel who were involved in Israeli operations in the besieged Strip — in addition to Palestinian testimonies, data, and documentation from the Gaza Strip, and official statements by the IDF Spokesperson and other Israeli state institutions.

Best of the Web: Leo Varadkar's Ireland is flirting with a new form of totalitarianism

Leo Varadkar
Now the whole world can see that Ireland is poised to pass one of the most draconian pieces of legislation in modern times.

Irish author Paul Lynch won the Booker Prize on Sunday. His novel, Prophet Song, imagines an Ireland that has fallen under Right-wing totalitarian control, and begins with members of the new secret police rapping on the door of a union leader to interrogate him for "sowing discord and unrest" against the government.

Novelists are free to dream up all manner of fictional scenarios, however far-fetched. The irony is that this is the exact opposite of what is happening in Ireland right now. The government in Dublin is indeed introducing extraordinary new legislation to restrict freedom of speech. But it's not horrid Right-wingers conspiring to suppress nice, decent liberals. It's nice, decent liberals scrambling to stamp out the opinions of what they call the "far-Right". And far from being alarmed by this assault on basic freedoms, the broad swathe of progressive opinion in Ireland is fully behind it, including most voices in the broadcast and print media, and every major party.

Best of the Web: The competency crisis is upon us

The glue of expertise that held our complicated social machinery together is coming apart, yet we continue to shift more and more responsibility to failing institutions. The outcome won't be pretty.

Our current managerial elite predicates its rule on the notion of expertise. Americans once believed that "popular will" granted a ruling class legitimacy, but that story has been replaced with one of scientific knowledge and credentials.

The modern political formula frames the world as a complex series of interconnected scientific disciplines that, if managed with a high degree of proficiency, can yield incredible material abundance and miraculous technological innovations. Competency is the key to utopia. Those who are able to obtain prestigious credentials gain the right to rule due to their unparalleled ability to manage complex systems.

But a fundamental shift in our political formula has put the system on a collision course with disaster.

Best of the Web: Elon Musk apologizes for antisemitic tweet but tells advertisers 'go f**k yourself'

Elon Musk
Elon Musk
Elon Musk, in his first interview with mainstream media since his antisemitic post on X earlier this month, apologized Wednesday for what he called his "dumbest" ever social media post. But he lashed out at advertisers leaving his platform because of rising antisemitism on X.

"I don't want them to advertise," he said at the New York Times DealBook Summit in New York. "If someone is going to blackmail me with advertising or money go f**k yourself. Go. F**k. Yourself," he said. "Is that clear? Hey Bob, if you're in the audience, that's how I feel" he added, referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who spoke earlier at the summit on Wednesday.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk's remarks.

Musk made the remarks as the X CEO, Linda Yaccarino, sat in the audience. Yaccarino was brought into the company to woo back big-name advertisers.

In a meandering conversation that lasted well over an hour, Musk also said he has no problem being hated. "Hate away," he said. "There's a real weakness to wanting to be liked.

Best of the Web: Why are "THEY" trying to injure or kill me?

getting vaccinated
Although this is a very sharp and harsh question to headline any article, it is a question that has to be asked. Why are most (if not all) of our trusted institutions colluding to kill or injure us? Why? For the average person who lives inside our very cozy media and government illusion, it's often a question that their minds won't even allow them to ponder. The average person's fear of reality ends up being a maximum-security psychic prison in most cases. This same fear inhibits the average person from processing what's obviously happening in our world today. The fear I allude to, which inhibits many people from coming into full contact with their very harsh and painful reality, has to do with a massive Grand Canyon sized contradiction gap between what the general public was taught (by conventional media and within government schools) and what's literally happening right in front of our very eyes.

Most people today are mentally paralyzed from reacting to their own destruction. Many just can't muster a logical reaction to the culling/injuring of their loved ones and the destruction of their entire culture....simply because they were taught for decades that "the government would never do that! That's just a conspiracy theory!". Here's what should be a very obvious NEWSFLASH, the governments around the world are in fact doing that. On top of that, much worse is coming from these governments if "we the people" don't start thinking, acting and talking like fully functional mature adults very soon.

The U.S. led War on the People of Palestine and the Middle East is a Criminal Undertaking

Introduction

We stand in Solidarity with Palestine. But we must recognize that the United States Military and Intelligence apparatus is firmly behind Israel's genocide directed against the People of Palestine.

And this must be part of the solidarity campaign, namely to Reveal the Truth regarding Washington's insidious role, which is part of a carefully planned military agenda directed against Palestine and the broader Middle East. Netanyahu is a proxy, with a criminal record. He has the unbending support of Western Europe's "Classe politique".

The U.S. led War on the People of Palestine and the Middle East is a Criminal Undertaking

Israel and the Zionist lobby in the U.S. are NOT exerting undue influence AGAINST U.S. Foreign Policy as outlined by numerous analysts.

Quite the opposite. The Zionist lobby is firmly aligned with U.S. foreign policy, and Vice Versa. It targets those who are opposed to war, who call for a cease fire. It exerts influence in favour of the conduct of the U.S. military agenda in support of Israel. The US military-intelligence establishment in coordination with powerful financial interests is calling the shots in regards to Israel's genocidal intent to "Wipe Palestine off the Map".

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency "is actively engaged in safety surveillance" of the COVID shots. They also claim that medical doctors and epidemiologists at the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "continuously screen and analyze" reports filed with the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) "to identify potential signals that would indicate the need for further study."1 Facts suggest otherwise.

Even officials at the FDA itself have stated that VAERS is not operating as intended, and that safety signals are not being addressed. Among them are Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and Narayan Nair, the FDA division director who oversees VAERS.

Both spoke to investigative reporter Jennifer Block, whose article on the failures of VAERS was published in The BMJ in November 2023.2
