Seasonal flu is not as contagious as the coronavirus and it's target is much more specific in it's lethality. If these precautions weren't being taken, the death toll would be much worse than the seasonal flu. It spreads that much more rapidly.
What is this 'specific lethality' you refer to? Contagion does not equal lethality. If high contagion produced 'specific lethality', kissing would result in massive numbers of deaths from the common cold. This coronavirus easily develops into pneumonia in people with compromised immunity. So does the flu. It appears from the statistics cited above that the flu does it much more often and much more readily.

The question in my mind is how they're making this coronavirus look like such an extraordinary threat requiring extraordinary measures in terms of access to ICU beds, respirators, etc.? Anybody got an explanation? Is it because the coronavirus is tending to piggyback on the flu, but it is being blamed for every life-threatening illness in which it plays a part? Or maybe every life-threatening illness period? Could some of the labs be faking their results?

I kind of saw all of this as starting with bitcoin--IMO that was all about getting people used to crypto currency. While I do think they will do this incrementally, at the same time, it seems like they are moving very quickly. I'm not sure how we fight back. We have already lost our rights and freedom. I'm in NJ, locked down and I think they are now telling us to stay off the roads. A country’s case fatality rate will look a lot worse if there are no active steps to test for coronavirus in the community. On the flipside - China, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea, etc stepped up testing much faster than e.g. the UK - which is only testing those people who are in hospital and need treatment. They also imposed draconian lockdowns more quickly. This means that the vast majority of e.g. UK cases are not tracked and, as a result, its fatality rate looks high. Italy and Spain are similar cases - compunded by a society that cohabits with elderly / visits it elderly more often, and has a higher proportion of elderly.
While Germany’s case fatality rate is 0.5 per cent, the UK’s currently stands at 5.2 per cent. Italy some 8%. There is massive variation due to testing policy and social structure. A lot of elderly in Germany are locked in care homes. In Italy they live with their families. What we can say is of just the known hositalisation (more severe) cases - 5% may die. Of those in ICU this becomes more like 20%. If we suppose (and there is good evidence that) the hopspitalisation rate is 20% on average across ALL ages - the true mortality rate is something like 1% for the whole population. Obviously this is massively skewed to the elderly. It is ~ 10x that of flu. But the true numbers will come out in time.
The biggest problem with this virus is the R0 of some 3-4. This means it infects a country exponentially compared to flu:
nCoV transmission: 1 > 4 > 16 > 64 > 256 > 1,024 > 4,096 > 16, 384 > 65,536 > 262,144 > 1,048,576 (10,485)
Flu Transmission: 1 > 2 > 4 > 8 > 16 > 32 > 64 > 128 > 256 > 512 > 1,024 (10)
That's 10 transmissions - with the total deaths as 1%, mostly elderly.
This is why it's overloading hospitals and countries can't cope with the numbers. These numbers are also with lockdowns in place, don't forget.

Mandatory Intellectomy It will be hard to dig out the real numbers. If people die (for whatever reason) and have nCoV antibodies they will put that in the pot. Not sure how anyone is going to get meaningful stats out of this. I have contacts in hospitals here in the UK and am asking them for updates on respiratory ICU cases vs normal. It's not hit here hard yet, so nothing concrete. I think you need to know people on the ground to be sure of anything.

History has shown that social communion and contact is vital to people. I believe it is also important spiritually and so even where some have tried to repress this basic need, the necessity to interact is too strong.
The thing is hardly anyone is tested for flu. Only those who are close to death or dead. This is a bad example of cherry-picking data. There are more tests going on for nCoV - to reduce the R0 - not just those who are critical. It's pretty well known the real mortality rate across the population for flu is 0.1%. Hospitals are built to cope for the rates of this. nCoV is LOOKING like 1% - so that's 10x as bad. But we don't know yet, however it looks about right compared to what's going on, on the ground. If it were less then hospitals would not be overloaded as they (obviously) are and the UK would not be repurposing a conference centre in London to house 4,000 ICU beds. We need to get balance right between doubt and social responsibility, without of course frog marching into totalitarianism.

A Czech doctor, Sona Pekova, devised a better and cheaper test that can tell apart covid-19 from the other coronaviruses, but the government refused to use it. I'm guessing the test would start painting a slightly different picture of what's going on.
