Wild hail storm shocks residents in Southeast Wisconsin

New Berlin-Wisconsinites pride themselves on being a hearty bunch, able to handle any kind of weather.

But the hail storm that happened Friday evening was like nothing many had ever seen before.

The CBS 58 Newsroom received several calls from viewers in shock.

CBS 58 viewer Joe James became a reporter of sorts and started rolling video and narrating the amazing sight outside his car window as he drove along Racine Avenue between Waukesha and Muskego.

"It was just 90 degrees earlier today," he declared. "Amazing hail storm."

Others in Ozaukee County said drivers pulled alongside the road they were so startled by the pounding of the hail stones.

Another resident in New Berlin said the hail had done major damage to her backyard, bringing down tree limbs everywhere she looked.

"You guys should be out here," she urged. "This is a big deal."

Ontario County farmers suffer crop damage from extreme hailstorm

It was a harsh wakeup call. People around our area were woken up by a strong thunderstorm. In some places, that storm dropped enough hail to cover the ground like snow. In addition to the hail, the storm brought heavy rain, lots of lightning and strong winds. Places in eastern Ontario County were among the hardest hit by the weather.

In his eighty years, Nicholas Legott had never seen a hailstorm in Geneva like he saw Thursday morning. He certainly did not expect to be shoveling hail out of his driveway.

Legott said, "The force of the hail hitting the house. It wasn't just that. It was coming down in buckets. It was unbelievable."

Just Wednesday, Legott and his family were ecstatic about how well their new garden of organic tomatoes and peppers were doing. Now, they are a shredded, icy mess.

Mother Nature's most fatal weather - Death by flood less common than by lightning

Severe lightning storms, such as the one that killed one and injured at least seven on Venice Beach last Sunday, are incredibly rare events. Dying because of one? Even rarer. However, a report on extreme weather - related deaths released Wednesday found that death by flood is even more uncommon.

The data, collected by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers, showed that while lightning strikes killed 182 Americans between 2006 and 2010, flooding was directly responsible for 93 fatalities.

Despite record stateside flooding within the past year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported only 28 flood fatalies in 2013, most of which occured while victims were driving.

CDC researchers analyzed death tolls caused by five kinds of severe weather: heat, cold, storms, floods, and lightning. Overall, 10,649 people died as a result of extreme weather events over the five-year period. The CDC also provides data tables showing the likelihood of death based on gender and race. White males, it appears, are the most likely to die from severe weather across the board.

Wild weather in Tasmania causes electricity cuts and one death

Wild weather is lashing Tasmania, with communities in the state's north facing flooding danger and the south enduring a major blackout

A 63-year-old woman has been killed by a falling tree in Launceston during a fourth day of wild weather across Tasmania.

Police were notified about midday that the woman was trapped under a tree at her home in the suburb of Trevallyn.

Inspector Michael Johnston said police were still at the property investigating the circumstances of the woman's death.

"They'd had a number of trees fall on her property and they were in the process of clearing those when a further tree fell and struck her," he said.

"She was trapped under the tree. Her husband was able to cut some of the tree away and get her out.

"Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene."

Extreme weather is causing massive power disruptions and damage as trees fall onto houses and power lines.

Hundreds evacuated and 3 killed due to floods in Bulgaria and Romania

Three people died and several hundreds were forced to evacuate as surging floodwaters submerged villages in Eastern Europe on Tuesday.

In Bulgaria, authorities said a 61-year-old woman died in the floods and another person was reported missing after torrential rains hit the region of Gabrovo in the central parts of the country.

Two people, including a 72-year-old man, also drowned in Romania as floods raged in different regions, said Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea. A passenger train derailed in the same area after a small bridge caved in due to flooding, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the national railway said.

Seventy Bulgarian villages and parts of the city of Gabrovo were left without electricity and water supply was disrupted as the flooding destroyed some of the water and sewerage infrastructure. The rains also induced landslides and destroyed bridges, and many roads in the region were blocked by mud and debris.

Dramatic film of flash flooding in Prague

A dramatic video has emerged of flash flooding in Prague on Monday which was caused by heavy rainfall.

According an eyewitness, flood waters washed away street signs and road barriers and Metro station was also flooded.

So far there have been no reports of injuries.


Comment: As can be seen from the chart below, the number of flood reports so far this year is already nearly equal to the total for 2013.

At least three tornadoes seen in the Denver metro area

At least three tornadoes touched down in the Denver metro area Monday afternoon. Confirmed twisters touched down near Fort Lupton, Denver International Airport and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.

Sky9 captured a tornado touch down briefly in the Weld County area. Viewer-submitted video showed a tornado near Fort Lupton. Weld County authorities said there were no signs of damage.

Two tornadoes were spotted near DIA, according to the airport's Twitter account. Airport passengers were proactively sheltered until the danger passed. RTD put all SkyRide buses from DIA on hold.

A debris field was spotted near Havana Street and East 51st Avenue. Sk9 flew over the scene and found damage to an industrial business.

There were no reports of injuries.

West Michigan slammed by golf ball sized hail

Several communities in west Michigan are cleaning up after getting slammed by high winds and golf ball sized hail.

The strong thunderstorm cut a path of destruction along the border of Kalamazoo and Allegan Counties.

Neighbors tell us there hasn't been a hail storm like this in decades.

Sunday night, the sky opened up and Mother Nature showed her wrath.

"It sounded like somebody was throwing golf balls at the house," said Kathy Porter of Cooper Township.

WWMT.com and our social media sites were soon flooded with pictures and videos of the huge hail.

"There was hail everywhere on the back porch, about two inches deep. Hail everywhere out there," said Denise Julien of Alamo Township.

Extreme weather rolled into the North of Boston region on Monday morning, spawning a tornado that ripped off roofs, uprooted trees, and shattered windows in the coastal community. Officials estimate 100-150 structures have been damaged, including 65 buildings that received substantial damage as well 13 that are uninhabitable. The damage was limited largely to residential roofs and windows on seven or eight streets, with no reported serious injuries.

"It's a work in progress, but I'm very confident that with the help of everyone involved... we're gonna get through this just fine," Mayor Rizzo said at a press conference late Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service confirms the tornado had a path length of two mile and width of 3/8 of a mile with most winds on the EF-1 scale, however, EF-2 damage was reported in the vicinity of Revere Beach Parkway and the tornado will be classified as such. Maximum wind gusts were estimated between 100 and 120mph.

Violent hailstorm causes head injuries in southern Siberia

Temperatures in Moscow may be scorching this week, but in southern Siberia the weather has proven to be a whole lot chillier - and destructive.

At least seven people suffered serious head injuries after walls of hail the size of golf balls rained down on residents in the Altai Republic, the local branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry said Tuesday.

About 3,000 buildings and countless cars were damaged in the downpour, which shattered an estimated 1,600 square meters of glass, the ministry said in a statement.

A video uploaded to YouTube attests to the size of the hail, which fell Monday in the region's Maiminsky and Gorno-Altai districts.
