Large hail pounds Glidden, Iowa

Chunks of ice the size of golf balls fell in Glidden Saturday in a small, quickly moving storm.

"I went, 'Oh my goodness,' " Glidden City Clerk Suzy Danner recalled. "It was just a shock."

Some of the hail exceeded 2 inches in diameter and caused small dents in vehicles. Danner said there was no known damage to city property.

The 4:15 p.m. storm was among several reports of hail that day across central Iowa, stretching from Glidden east to Eldora, according to the National Weather Service.

The first report of hail was in Dawson in Dallas County about 2:15 p.m. The final report was in Eldora in Hardin County about 6:30 p.m.

Rain, floods claim 1,422 lives so far this year in India

As many as 1,422 people were killed in India over the past couple of months in rain and flood-related incidents in several states of the country, including Kerala, Maharashtra, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

The national daily, the Hindustan Times reported, "between June 1 and September 14, at least 1,422 people were killed because of rains, the highest since data started being compiled by the union home ministry nine years ago. Last year, the figure stood at 1,379 - of which Kerala alone accounted for 498 deaths."

At least six fatalities have now been confirmed from the harsh weather that has been affecting southeastern Spain since September 11, 2019. Authorities are describing it as the worst storm since 1879 when floodwaters killed over 1 000 in Murcia and Orihuela.

The worst-hit provinces included Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Albacete, Almeria, and Malaga.

Ontinyent, Orihuela, and Moixent experienced swelling of rivers leading to raging floods after 250 mm (9.8 inches) of rain fell in 12 hours on top of days of heavy rain. This is 10 times the normal amount for the time of the year.

54 areas of the Philippines flooded due to tropical depression Marilyn

A total of 54 areas across the country were flooded due to the southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical depression Marilyn.

Based on the situational report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of September 15, the flooded areas that were affected include Pampanga, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga City.

Several houses were damaged due to the flood, however, there were no reported accidents involving residents in the said areas as families have been evacuated.

Koh Chang in Thailand inundated with floods and rough seas after 2 days of torrential rain

Ferry services and tours were halted after torrential rain, floods and rough seas has inundated Koh Chang, in Southern Thailand.

Local officials reported the overflowing canals on the island following more than two days of torrential rain. Several roads, bridges and properties near waterways were damaged, the Bangkok Post reported.

The areas around Khlong Son, Khlong Phlu, Kai Bae and Chai Chet bridges were affected. Motorists were advised to stay away from flooded roads and bridges due to powerful currents. Which already engulfed and damaged several vehicles.

A car crawling through traffic in Russia was blasted by lightning -twice- in an incredible double-strike that was filmed by the dashcam of a nearby vehicle. The flashes were so powerful they temporarily blinded another driver.

Galina Ershova was driving along the Berdskoye Highway in Novosibirsk, Siberia, when her dashcam recorded the unlikeliest of drivetime distractions - a double lightning strike mere feet away from her own car.

"I was blinded for a split second, I grabbed the steering wheel with a death grip," Ershova said. "It happened so quickly."

Heavy rains, floods leave over 200 dead in central India

Over 200 people have died and thousands rendered homeless in ravaging floods due to heavy rains in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh over the past several days, a state government official confirmed to Xinhua.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the state received 34 percent excess rains compared to the previous year, leading to devastating floods.

State Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Sunday tweeted that incessant rains continued in several parts, including Mandsaur, Neemach, Ratlam, Aagar, Shajapur, Ujjain, Gwalior, Khandwa, Bhopal, and Indore districts.

Child dies from lightning strike in Bath County, Virginia

The Bath County Sheriff's Office 911 center received a 911 call Saturday night about a child being struck by lightning.

According to the Bath County Sheriff's Office, the dispatch center was notified by a Hot Springs Rescue Member that there was a 12 year old boy without a pulse and not breathing.

Hot Springs Rescue Squad requested Air Medical but, due to weather conditions, none was available and the patient was transported to Bath Community Hospital.

The boy was revived by ER staff and transported to Roanoke Carilion Hospital by ambulance but died from sustained injuries at 11:23 am on September 15.

According to the Bath County Sheriff's Office, the victim was visiting family in the Hot Springs area of Bath County. To protect the privacy of the mourning family, no other details will be released.

If you thought this summer in Sweden was stormy, you weren't wrong. More than 210,000 lightning strikes have been registered in the country so far this year, a six-fold increase on two years ago.

Erik Engström, a meteorologist at state weather forecaster SMHI told broadcaster TV4 that the high frequency of thunder and lightning came down to warm weather.

"This summer we had a lot of warm, wet air coming in over the country and that's one of the main pre-conditions for storms," he said.
