Global wind speeds slowing since 1960, but nobody knows why

Slowing Wind Speeds
© Pixabay/Free-PhotosThe average terrestrial wind speed has slowed down half a kilometre per hour every decade since the 1960s.
Wind speeds around the world seem to be decreasing in a phenomenon known as 'stilling' and European scientists are hoping to find out why.

Few people have probably noticed, but the world's winds are getting slower. It is something that cannot be picked up by watching the billowing of dust or listening to the rustle of leaves on nearby trees.

Instead, it is a phenomenon occurring on a different scale, as the average global wind speed close to the surface of the land decreases. And while it is not affecting the whole earth evenly, the average terrestrial wind speed has decreased by 0.5 kilometres per hour (0.3 miles per hour) every decade, according to data starting in the 1960s.

Known as 'stilling', it has only been discovered in the last decade. And while it may sound deceptively calm, it could be a vital, missing piece of the climate change puzzle and a serious threat to our societies.

Dr Cesar Azorin-Molina, a climatologist at Sweden's University of Gothenburg and lead researcher of the EU-funded STILLING project, believes there is an urgent need to determine the causes of stilling in a changing climate.

While 0.5 kilometre per hour might barely seem enough to ruffle any feathers, he warns that prolonged stilling will have serious impacts.

'There are serious implications of wind changes in areas like agriculture and hydrology, basically because of the influence of wind on evaporation,' said Dr Azorin-Molina. 'A declining trend in wind speed can impact long-term power generation, and weaker winds can also mean less dispersion of pollutants in big cities, exacerbating air quality problems and therefore impacting human health.'

According to the Associated Press, high winds from the storm dubbed Xavier killed seven people Thursday in Germany and two in Poland on Friday.

Officials say the storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of households in Poland after falling trees brought down power lines.

In Poland, the storm was responsible for the death of a 67-year-old man trying to secure the roof to his house and a 58-year-old woman, who was killed by a falling tree.

On Thursday, the storm was responsible for the death of 54-year-old Sylke Tempel, a prominent journalist and political expert, the Berliner Zeitung reported.

A truck driver was also among the victims when a tree fell on his vehicle near Rostock. Four others were killed in Brandenburg, and a woman was killed in Berlin from a falling tree.

Comment: Less than a month ago Storm Sebastian killed three people across Germany with hurricane-force winds. In August five people died after a violent bow echo storm system hit Poland.

At least 22 have died in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras as torrential rains uproot trees, knock out bridges and turn roads into rivers.

The storm is heading for the US Gulf Coast where it is expected to strike as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday.

Storm or hurricane watches have been issued from Louisiana east through Mississippi and Alabama, with a state of emergency declared in 29 Florida counties, the US National Hurricane Center said.

A spokesman added: 'The threat of the impact is increasing, so folks along the northern Gulf Coast should be paying attention to this thing.'

Houston breaks annual rainfall record set in 1900 with 73.51" of rain so far this year

Hurricane Harvey Houston
© Abrahan GarzaHurricane Harvey accounts for more than half of Houston's 2017 rainfall.
As of Tuesday morning, Houston had received more rainfall than in any other year on record - with nearly three months left in 2017 to add to that total.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport received 1.46 inches of rain overnight, the Houston/Galveston branch of the National Weather Service announced, pushing its annual rainfall total to 73.51 inches.

Hurricane Harvey, which dumped nearly 40 inches of rain at Bush Airport and more than 50 inches in other areas of Houston, accounts for more than half of the city's 2017 rainfall to date.

"When you have tropical storms and hurricanes like we have, like Harvey, which was such a big rainmaker, you're going to have higher rainfall totals," said Nikki Hathaway, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Hathaway said forecasters are unable to project how much more rain Houston will get this year, but if Houston gets average rainfall in October, November and December, it can expect about 13 more inches of precipitation. That would bring the yearly total to an astounding 86.51 inches - the height of Houston Rockets great Hakeem Olajuwon, plus two inches.

A winter storm hit the plains hard Monday dumping 2 1/2 feet of snow in the Bear Paw Mountains on the Rocky Boy's Reservation and more than a foot of snow on Hi-Line locations where some 7,000 people were without power and roads were treacherous.

The highest snow total that the National Weather Service in Great Falls had received as of 11:15 a.m. was 30 inches at the Rocky Boy's Reservation in the Bear Paw Mountains, said meteorologist Paul Nutter.

"Snow drifts of any where from 4 to 6 feet or snow," Nutter said.

The city of Havre received 15.5 inches of snow, said Andy Hanson, public works director for Hill County.

While the mountains in western Montana received a dusting of snow early this week, Havre Montana was pounded by what appears to be a record snowstorm. Meteorologist Paul Nutter from the National Weather Service in Great Falls explains.

"Snow accumulations in Havre have seen widespread reports of a foot, maybe as much as 15 inches in the Havre area," Nutter said. "Potentially, what is more significant is that snow stuck to all the leaf covered trees and the result has been broken limbs and power outages. Our understanding is that power is out for all of Havre... as far as we know."

Nutter said the snowfall increased dramatically on Monday and began to dissipate by around 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 3. Up to this point, the record snowfall for the Havre area at this time of year was between five and eight inches.
