Capistrano Beach in California crumbles: Walkway destroyed, palms uprooted, old buried cars exposed from surf battering

destruction capistrano beach
© Matt LarmandAn area of Capistrano Beach in Dana Point was destroyed by this week’s big surf and high tides. The area is prone to storm damage, but this week’s destruction was the worst yet.
Will Johnson and Keith Miller looked down at the decimated pieces of Capistrano Beach, pointing down at an odd sight.

The popular basketball court was closed, the wooden walkway and seawall just south of where they stood crumbled, and decades-old palms were uprooted, pointing out to the ocean's horizon after this week's storms battered the area.

But the seaside scene of destruction isn't what caught the eye of the two Capo Beach residents out Saturday for an early morning walk.

"Look at all the cars, that's crazy, the steering wheels and tires," said Miller, pointing to the pieces of old cars embedded in boulders, now exposed.

Faced with pelting rain, Clem Newby hung back from following his herd out of the milking shed for a few minutes.

It's a move that might just have saved his life.

Five hundred metres down the farm race a lightning bolt from a vengeful sky north of Hamilton struck and killed four cows on their way back to the paddock on Tuesday morning

"It was a hell of a bang," Newby said.

"The lightning was just horrific and it really frightened myself. I had never heard anything like it in my life and it really shook the cowshed."

Record snowfall hits parts of Alberta, Canada

It was too much, too soon for Edmonton into Monday morning, as a hefty helping of snow turned Alberta's capital into a winter wonderland -- even though the start of winter is still a few weeks off. Weather warnings dropped early Monday morning, but the snow was still falling through the pre-dawn hours, adding to what was already a record snowfall accumulation. As the city awoke on Monday, upwards of 20 cm had been reported across the city, with a bit more yet to come before the snow tapers off.

The city set a new daily snowfall record on Sunday, chalking up 14 cm of fresh snowfall through the day, and smashing a record set back in 1975. Additional heaviest snow fell late Sunday night into Monday, and that meant Edmonton residents were waking up to some significant shoveling on Monday morning. Local media reported that many roads, especially side streets, were in poor condition as the city began its day

Rare off-season tornado outbreak leaves central Illinois with damage, injuries

Andrew Pritchard, who goes by @skydrama on Twitter, captured this image of a tornado racing through Beardstown, Illinois, on Saturday.
Central Illinois is coping with damage and injuries after a rare blitz of tornadoes Saturday, when 22 twisters were reported to the National Weather Service.

Hardest hit was the town of Taylorville, about 30 miles southeast of the capital of Springfield. Storm winds wrecked houses, downed power lines and pulled trees up by the roots.

"It's a miracle no one was killed in the tragedy of these tornadoes," said Gov. Bruce Rauner, who toured the area on Sunday.

At least three people are being treated for major injuries at Memorial Hospital in Springfield and 18 more suffered minor injuries, Rauner said. The governor activated Illinois' State of Emergency Operations Center.

Rescuers pulled people from homes damaged by the twisters, Taylorville Fire Department Chief Mike Crews said. Otherwise, no deaths have been reported.

Illinois has an average of 47 tornadoes a year, not including December, which doesn't have an average, said CNN Meteorologist Allison Chinchar, speaking of the rarity of Saturday's twister cluster. May is the peak month, with an average of 15 tornadoes.

Cold snap and dust storms blanket China's far northwest in 'yellow snow'

yellow snow
Some parts of northwestern China have been blanketed by "yellow snow", a phenomenon the meteorological authority said was due to a combination of cold weather mixed with sandstorms.

Snowfalls of 10-20cm (around 4-8 inches) were reported in the region's capital Urumqi and the cities of Shihezi and Changji on Saturday.

Residents found the surface of the snow was covered with a layer of dust but white underneath, a phenomenon some compared with tiramisu.

"Since last Friday, many places in Xinjiang have been hit by gales measured at force seven or above," He Qing, director of the Xinjiang Meteorological Administration, told the Xinhua news agency.

Severe flash flood hits Bodrum, Turkey - second time in 10 days

Flash floods wash away cars in Turkish holiday resort of Bodrum
For the second time in 10 days, flood water has surged through the streets of Bodrum. The Turkish city which is the gateway to nearby holiday resorts during the summer is currently a scene of flood damage.

Heavy rainfall swept cars down the streets and left them either submerged or stacked. The downpour was preceded by a waterspout, seen to form under a thunderstorm and drift towards the beach. The following rain went on into the night.

Bodrum Mayor Mehmet Kocadon emphasised that citizens were warned in advance of the heavy rain risk: "It was a very interesting situation. It was like a monsoon rain. ... There are a lot of floods. Bodrum centre, there is a great disaster around. Bodrum is currently experiencing a historical disaster."

Another winter storm is making its way toward Lake Tahoe where nearly 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow already has fallen at several ski resorts and more than 4 feet (1.2 meters) is reported further south in the highest elevations of the central Sierra along the California-Nevada line.

The National Weather Service says the most recent snowfall Thursday and early Friday totaled about 20 inches (45 cm) at Northstar, Squaw Valley and Mt. Rose on the highway connecting Reno to Lake Tahoe.

As much as 53 inches (134 centimeters) of snow was reported at Mammoth Mountain ski area three hours south of Tahoe.

Precipitation has been mostly in the form of rain in the valleys, including Reno where a record .61 inch of rain fell at the airport Thursday, breaking the old record of .32 set in 2000.

Comment: It looks very likely that the forecast made on the 29th of November for 5 feet of snow to have fallen over the area in the past 3 days (and before the weekend) will actually happen. Perhaps more tellingly this is also before meteorological winter officially starts on the 1st of December (Saturday).

In the course of a few short days, mother nature dumped a whole lot of winter weather across Western New York. For Perrysburg in Cattaraugus County, that translated into 35.2 inches of snow, as reported by the National Weather Service's Buffalo office at 3 p.m., Wednesday.

"[I] woke up this morning and it seemed like there was another foot which was just crazy, unbelievable," Craig Papiernik said. He spent most of the day clearing his and his neighbors' driveways with his stepson Christian.

Comment: 60 inches? It's not even December!
