Farmers are counting the cost of hail storms, heavy rain and strong winds that tore through the central Wheatbelt on Monday afternoon.

The wild weather event, which stretched across areas including Bolgart and North Tammin to Southern Cross, in places dumped more than 40mm of rain, while crops were pelted with 3cm hailstones and lightning strikes caused spot fires.

At Tammin, WAFarmers president Tony York said his family's 1300ha wheat crop, yet to be harvested, had varying levels of hail damage. About 300ha of that was destroyed.

He said neighbours had reported similar destruction.

Capistrano Beach in California crumbles: Walkway destroyed, palms uprooted, old buried cars exposed from surf battering

destruction capistrano beach
© Matt LarmandAn area of Capistrano Beach in Dana Point was destroyed by this week’s big surf and high tides. The area is prone to storm damage, but this week’s destruction was the worst yet.
Will Johnson and Keith Miller looked down at the decimated pieces of Capistrano Beach, pointing down at an odd sight.

The popular basketball court was closed, the wooden walkway and seawall just south of where they stood crumbled, and decades-old palms were uprooted, pointing out to the ocean's horizon after this week's storms battered the area.

But the seaside scene of destruction isn't what caught the eye of the two Capo Beach residents out Saturday for an early morning walk.

"Look at all the cars, that's crazy, the steering wheels and tires," said Miller, pointing to the pieces of old cars embedded in boulders, now exposed.

Faced with pelting rain, Clem Newby hung back from following his herd out of the milking shed for a few minutes.

It's a move that might just have saved his life.

Five hundred metres down the farm race a lightning bolt from a vengeful sky north of Hamilton struck and killed four cows on their way back to the paddock on Tuesday morning

"It was a hell of a bang," Newby said.

"The lightning was just horrific and it really frightened myself. I had never heard anything like it in my life and it really shook the cowshed."

Record snowfall hits parts of Alberta, Canada

It was too much, too soon for Edmonton into Monday morning, as a hefty helping of snow turned Alberta's capital into a winter wonderland -- even though the start of winter is still a few weeks off. Weather warnings dropped early Monday morning, but the snow was still falling through the pre-dawn hours, adding to what was already a record snowfall accumulation. As the city awoke on Monday, upwards of 20 cm had been reported across the city, with a bit more yet to come before the snow tapers off.

The city set a new daily snowfall record on Sunday, chalking up 14 cm of fresh snowfall through the day, and smashing a record set back in 1975. Additional heaviest snow fell late Sunday night into Monday, and that meant Edmonton residents were waking up to some significant shoveling on Monday morning. Local media reported that many roads, especially side streets, were in poor condition as the city began its day

Rare off-season tornado outbreak leaves central Illinois with damage, injuries

Central Illinois is coping with damage and injuries after a rare blitz of tornadoes Saturday, when 22 twisters were reported to the National Weather Service.

Hardest hit was the town of Taylorville, about 30 miles southeast of the capital of Springfield. Storm winds wrecked houses, downed power lines and pulled trees up by the roots.

"It's a miracle no one was killed in the tragedy of these tornadoes," said Gov. Bruce Rauner, who toured the area on Sunday.

At least three people are being treated for major injuries at Memorial Hospital in Springfield and 18 more suffered minor injuries, Rauner said. The governor activated Illinois' State of Emergency Operations Center.

Rescuers pulled people from homes damaged by the twisters, Taylorville Fire Department Chief Mike Crews said. Otherwise, no deaths have been reported.

Illinois has an average of 47 tornadoes a year, not including December, which doesn't have an average, said CNN Meteorologist Allison Chinchar, speaking of the rarity of Saturday's twister cluster. May is the peak month, with an average of 15 tornadoes.
