Rescue workers rescue people on a dinghy boat on a flooded street after heavy rains hit the east coast of Marche region in Senigallia, Italy, on Friday
At least eight people have been killed and four others are missing after 16 inches of rain hit the central Italian region of Marche in just two hours, causing catastrophic floods.
Local authorities said they did not expect such a sudden 'water bomb', as around 16 inches of rain fell within two hours on Thursday night, inundating the streets of several towns in the Ancona and Pesaro-Urbino provinces.
'It was like an earthquake,' Ludovico Caverni, the mayor of the town of Serra Sant'Abbondio, told RAI state radio.

A town in southeast France saw more than 10cm of hailstones accumulate on the ground last night (September 14) as a violent storm moved over the area.
The episode lasted from 22:30 until midnight, covering the town of Gap in the Hautes-Alpes in a blanket of icy residue which was 15cm thick in some places, according to Météo Alpes Durance.
Some residents had to use a shovel to clear the pavement outside their houses.
Meteorologist Paul Marquis said that the hail storm was "exceptional", adding: "This type of phenomenon remains really rare, especially in terms of the quantity [of hail] seen."

Torrential, unrelenting rains swept through Chicago on Sunday, flooding basements and alleys, closing grocery stores and restaurants, and leaving cars floating under viaducts on streets impassable with deep water.
The extreme weather took the city by surprise, particularly the North Side of Chicago. Close to five inches of rain had fallen by late afternoon, according to Kevin Doom, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
"This has been a mess," he said. "The water rose pretty quickly this morning, so it caught a lot of people off guard."
At some intersections, cars were stranded in the rainwater after motorists drove through suddenly flooded roads. Homeowners whose basements had not seen water in years were unpleasantly surprised to discover that rainwater had surged up through drains, in some cases leaving an ankle-deep flood carrying a pungent smell of sewage. Grocery stores dealing with flooding closed their doors, and some businesses could not open at all.
