Flood-ravaged areas in the Northeast could see even more rainfall on Thursday as communities in Vermont and New York try to recover from a historic deluge.

In Vermont, some areas had recorded up to 9 inches of rain over a 24-hour period by Tuesday afternoon as small creeks turned into raging rivers that swallowed roads in the worst flooding to hit the Green Mountain State since Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Over 200 people have been rescued in Vermont since the flooding began, including 32 people who were rescued in hard-hit Lamoille County Tuesday night, officials said.

No injuries or deaths have been reported in the state.

Vermont Commissioner of Public Safety Jennifer Morrison said the state is in much better shape Wednesday than it was Tuesday, but rescues are still ongoing.

Heavy snow on the way to Chandratal Lake from Losar in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district has proved a major deterrent for the district administration to evacuate the 293 stranded tourists out of the area safely for the past four days.

The tourists were stranded at Chandratal since Saturday due to blockade of road in the region.

On Tuesday, a rescue team comprising the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel, local youths and officials led by Kaza ADC Rahul Jain moved towards Chandratal from Losar, but heavy snow on the Losar-Chandratal road disrupted their access to the site.

The BRO started the snow clearing operation on the road on Tuesday and were able to restore only 12km of road from Losar towards Chandratal.

According to officials, 25-km-long road is still covered under thick blanket of snow upto Chandratal, where up to 4 feet of snow has been reported.

Six people died and three others were missing after the "heaviest rain ever" triggered floods and landslides in south-west Japan.

The Japan meteorological agency warned residents in Kyushu - one of the country's four main islands - to stay alert for more landslides, a common hazard in mountainous areas after heavy rainfall.

However, the agency on Tuesday downgraded an earlier special warning for heavy rain covering more than 1.7 million people in northern parts of the island.

Japan has been hit by unusually heavy rain and powerful typhoons in recent years, raising fears about its vulnerability to the climate crisis.

"This is the heaviest rain ever experienced" in the region, said Satoshi Sugimoto, a meteorological agency official. "The situation is such that lives are in danger and their safety must be secured."
