Floods in Tuscany, Italy after 50 mm of rain in 3 hours

Homes and businesses were flooded yesterday in Tuscany, Italy, after an intense storm dumped over 50 mm of rain in about 3 hours.

The storm hit during the afternoon of 08 May, 2018, flooding areas near Sinalunga (Siena province), San Polo in Chianti (Florence) and Volterra (Pisa).

In San Polo, local civil protection said that two small rivers - the Robiana and the Ema - overflowed, and that roads, houses, shops and other businesses were damaged by the flood water that reached over 1 metre deep. Further damage was caused by a landslide which blocked a road just outside the town.

Dozens killed after dam break in Kenya, where record flooding continues

The flood situation continues in Kenya, with more deaths reported after a dam broke its banks killing at least 38 people.

The Patel Dam in Solai, Subukia Sub-County, Nakuru County, broke its banks at around 21:00 on Wednesday 09 May, 2018.

In a statement made soon after the dam break Governor Lee Kinyanjui said, "The water has caused huge destruction of both life and property. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained. The County Government of Nakuru, Kenya Red Cross and the local leadership are coordinating rescue operations....We assure residents that we are doing our best to evacuate affected families to safety and assist victims get medical attention."


Comment: Latest toll is 41 dead from this latest calamity, bringing the death toll from flooding in Kenya in the last two months to about 170.

18 dead following massive landslide after heavy rainfall in Western Province of Rwanda

At least 18 people have died in a landslide in Western Province of Rwanda.

Heavy rain triggered a massive landslide in Rwankuba sector of Karongi district in Western Province, late on Sunday, 06 May, 2018. Dozens of homes were destroyed. Rwanda Red Cross says that at least 300 people are homeless. The Red Cross added that around 12 people have been injured.

The country's Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) said that at least 18 people died in Karongi. Minister De Bonheur Jeanne, along with the Governor of Western Province, joined the population of Rwankuba sector for the funeral of 15 victims today, Tuesday 08 May, adding that three other victims were buried yesterday.

At least 4 killed by flash flood in Duhok, Iraq

At least 4 people died in flash floods that hit the city of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on Saturday, 05 May 2018.

Duhok Civil Defense said that the floods devastated the centre of the city of Duhok and the surrounding regions, damaging or destroying more than 50 homes and 30 cars. The majority of damage was in areas close to the Hishkaro River.

Teams from police and civil defence were called on to rescue 27 people from the flood waters. The fatalities occurred when two vehicles were swept away by flood water in the sub-district of Fahid of the city.

Local media reported that flooding also affected nearby camps for internally displaced people.

Water levels in rivers began to increase throughout the province from 23 April as a result of continuous snow melt. Flooding has affected areas across New Brunswick over the last 5 days, causing damage to properties and closing 80 roads and bridges, including part of the Trans-Canada highway between Moncton and Fredericton.

Unexpected flood hits Ankara, Turkey - vehicles float down streets

Turkey's capital Ankara was hit Saturday by a sudden flood, which was caused by heavy rainfall in the central Anatolian province.

The flood dragged dozens of vehicles from the streets in Ankara's Mamak district.

Videos showing a man desperately sitting on top of his car, while the flood washed away several vehicles in Mamak's Boğaziçi neighborhood were proof of the unexpected natural disaster.

The man was reportedly later rescued and only slightly injured.

Two days of heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides in Sardinia, Italy. Around 100 people have been evacuated from their homes. In the last 48 hours some areas have recorded over 150 mm of rain - more than four times the average monthly total for May.

Schools have been closed in several areas of the island due to the bad weather. Flooding and landslides have closed roads in the Municipality of Villacidro and near Cagliari.

Two families were evacuated as a precaution in Villacidro, South Sardinia Province. Around 100 people (20 families) have been evacuated in Torpé in Nuoro Province as a precaution due to rising levels of the Posada river.

Firefighters were called to over 60 interventions in Cagliari and surrounding areas. Emergency services also rescued farm workers who were stranded by flooding in Nuoro Province.
