107,000 displaced by floods in Ethiopia since late April, says UN

FLOODS
Flooding has affected over 200,000 people in Ethiopia since late April, according to the United Nations.

In a report of 06 May, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that flooding had affected 219,000 people in areas of Somali, Afar, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNP), Dire Dawa and Harari in Ethiopia.

As many as 107,000 people have been displaced, mostly in Somali region after flash floods on 25 April affected 34,507 households and displaced 15,195 households in Erer, Sitti, Nogob and Korahe zones.

On 24 April, flash floods in Dire Dawa killed four people and damaged 53 houses (fully) and 212 houses (partially).

Torrential rain from 02 May caused flooding in French Guiana, prompting 139 people to evacuate their homes in Saint-Laurent du Maroni, according to the region's government. Around 100 people were temporarily accommodated in a local sports stadium.

Saint Laurent du Maroni recorded 127mm of rain in 48 hours to 04 May, causing the Saint-Laurent creek to break its banks.

Elsewhere in the country, roads were blocked by flood waters in Kourou District, causing major traffic problems.

Media reported severe flooding from the overflowing Oyapock river in the remote Camopi commune, home to around 1,800 people.

Floods kill 16 in Somalia, affect over 200,000 others

At least 16 people have died while more than 200,000 others have been affected by torrential rains and riverine floods since the Gu (April-June) rains started in Somalia a month ago, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Wednesday.

OCHA said 10 other people are missing due to floods and at least 2,000 farms have been swamped by water.

"The rains are likely to increase the risk of water-borne diseases," OCHA warned in its latest report on the impact of floods in Somalia.

The forecast by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) indicates that the moderate to high flood risk is likely to persist at least through mid-May.

Flooding inundates streets in Okinawa, Japan

Flood warnings were issued for Okinawa as heavy rain fell on the Japanese island on May 6.

Local media reported that around 110 millimetres of rain had fallen in the region around Itoman City on Okinawa by 6:40 am.

Japan's Meteorlogical Agency warned of inundation and ground-loosening in various parts of the island.

Flash flood kills 4 persons in north Afghanistan

Four persons were killed and several houses destroyed as a flash flood swept parts of Tala-o-Barfak district in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province on Saturday, district governor Abdul Ahmad Barfaki said Sunday.

Heavy rain followed by flash flood hit several villages in Tala-o-Barfak district late Saturday, besides killing four people also washing away several houses and badly damaging farmlands, the official said.

According to the official, rescue operation is underway to find the bodies of the killed persons.

Disaster authorities in Indonesia have reported flooding in Bandung Regency, West Java, a region blighted by flooding over the last few months.

Recent heavy rainfall triggered flooding on 30 April, affecting the 5 sub-districts of Dayeuhkolot, Baleendah, Arjasari, Bojongsoang, and Banjaran.

Flood water was up to 2 metres deep in some areas. As of 02 May, 21,888 homes had been submerged, affecting 81,088 residents (24,898 families). Schools, places of worship and other public buildings have also been flooded.

Six out of 7 bodies found after police officers killed by raging floodwaters in Kenya

Rescuers have found the bodies of six of the seven police officers who drowned in Kagir River, Baringo North, following flash floods on Thursday night.

One more body was found on Saturday, as the search entered day two, raising the total to six since Friday evening.

Twelve officers of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit were returning to their camp in Chemoe, from a security meeting in Kabarnet, when their truck was swept away by raging floodwaters.

Seven officers were swept downstream while five managed to jump to safety.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MINEMA) in Rwanda reports that heavy rain fell across the country from 01 May causing severe damages.

As of 03 May 8 people had died, 5 were injured, more than 100 houses had collapsed and roads were closed.

According to Meteo Rwanda, more heavy rain is expected in Kigali city, Northern Province and Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rutsiro, Ngororero, Muhanga and Ruhango districts over the next 7 days, increasing the risk of further floods and landslides. MINEMA urged people to take necessary precautions.

Two dead as landslides hit after 10 hours of heavy rainfall in Kigezi, Uganda

Two people have died and 31 houses have been destroyed following landslides that hit Kigezi sub region.

Mr Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region, said Everist Ahimbisibwe, 9, and Cleo Amanya, 4, both children of Mr Julius Atwine, a resident of Karengyere village, Muko Sub County in Rubanda District, were swept away by running water amid heavy down pour.

Mr Maate, said that the two female juveniles were braving a heavy downpour to return home.

The floods resulted from a heavy downpour that started on Saturday morning at around 2.00am and lasted for over 10 hours.
