Camera captures giant rare deep-sea fish in Pacific

FISH
Japanese researchers say they have successfully filmed a giant rare deep-sea fish in the Pacific called the "yokozuna iwashi."

The fish was discovered some years ago in Suruga Bay, central Japan, and identified as a new species last year. Only six have been captured or photographed so far, and little is known about it.

Researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology said the footage was taken by a camera placed at a depth of 2,000 meters in the sea last October about 100 kilometers southwest of Hachijojima Island in Tokyo.

Let them eat crickets

Bill Gates' dream of a meatless Utopia is coming to fruition one insect at a time. Aspire Food Group of Canada announced that it has created an "alternative protein manufacturing facility." They are not referring to soy or plant-based alternatives but are encouraging the consumption of crickets.

The facility will produce 9,000 metric tons of crickets annually for both pets and humans. I personally would not even allow my dog to eat this pest. So, the plan is to distribute two billion bugs across the US and Canada. Crickets were previously sold to fish bait and pet shops (reptiles) for around $12 for 250 crickets, according to some estimates. The average female lays up to 10 eggs per day for the duration of her short lifespan. One square feet can hold an estimated 1,000 crickets, making this a much easier alternative to raising traditional livestock. Crickets require less space than cattle and allegedly produce less CO2 despite the fact that livestock is not the main culprit.

Rare deep sea oarfish spotted on the Great Barrier Reef - first ever record for the location

A rare juvenile oarfish was spotted near Opal Reef about 48 kilometres off Port Douglas.

A fish that has never been seen off the east coast of Australia has been spotted on the Great Barrier Reef.

Marine biologist Jorja Gilmore was at the shallows of Opal Reef, about 48 kilometres off the coast of Port Douglas, when something in the water caught her eye about lunchtime on June 16.

"I was taking a guided snorkel group for a swim, when I looked down into one of the corals and saw something very unusual," she said.

Ms Gilmore had only been working on the reef since February, so she called master reef guide Tahn Miller over for look.

"I didn't know what it was, so I called over Tahn who had a camera," she said.

A stretch of Egypt's Red Sea coastline was closed by authorities Saturday after a shark killed an Austrian woman swimming near the resort of Hurghada the day before.

The 68-year-old woman, who lost a leg and an arm in the shark attack, died shortly after she was brought to the private Nile Hospital in Hurghada, an Egyptian health official said.

She was barely alive when she was brought in on Friday, the official said, adding that attempts by medical staff to resuscitate her failed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

According to an internal document from the office of the governor of the Red Sea province, shared with The Associated Press (AP), authorities were to close off the area for three days, banning all "sea activities," including diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and kite sailing. Fishing boats were also banned from the waters off Hurghada.

Two women killed in shark attacks in Egypt's Red Sea

A Romanian and an Austrian die within 600 metres of each other south of city of Hurghada

Two women have been killed in shark attacks in Egypt's Red Sea, south of the city of Hurghada, the Egyptian environment ministry has said.

Two sources told Reuters that the body of a Romanian tourist in her late forties was discovered hours after an attack that left a 68-year-old Austrian woman dead. Both attacks happened within 600 metres of each other, off the coast of Sahl Hasheesh, according to the sources.

The ministry said in its statement on Sunday that a committee had been formed to examine the circumstances of the attacks and any scientific reasons behind them.

It also mentioned that the governor of the Red Sea Governorate, Maj Gen Amr Hanafi, has issued an order to suspend all activity in the area surrounding the attacks with several beaches being closed.

The first victim was transferred to a local private hospital, a source at the Red Sea Health Affairs Directorate told Reuters. He added that there were attempts to resuscitate her, but she died from her injuries.

A security source also added that the Austrian woman had been living in Egypt over the past five years with her Egyptian husband.
Other fatalities due to shark attacks so far in 2022: Shark attacks rose worldwide in 2021 - and 64% of bites occurred in the U.S.

Florida shark attack victim identified, family says she's in good spirits

A 17-year-old girl attacked by a shark at Keaton Beach Thursday has a long road to recovery, but her family said she's in good spirits and God is on their side.

Addison Bethea was scalloping near Big Grassy Island when the attack happened, according to Taylor County deputies. The family said the shark bit her multiple times, and it would not let loose.

It was Rhett Willingham, her firefighter brother, who jumped in to literally fight off the shark and likely saved her life, according to a press release from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

Rhett put a tourniquet on her leg to minimize blood loss to the massive injury and kept her awake, and once the boat got back to Keaton Beach, she was flown to TMH for emergency surgeries.

The Dutch farmers' protest and the War on Food

Dutch Farmers Protest
© Off-Guardian
This week, tens of thousands of farmers have gathered from all across the Netherlands to protest government policies which will reduce the number of livestock in the country by up to a third.

In a typical example of media weasel-wording, the press reports on this all headline something like "Dutch farmers protest emissions targets", but this is a massive lie by omission.

The government policy being protested is a 25 BILLION Euro investment in "reducing levels of nitrogen pollution" true, but it plans to achieve this by (among other things) "paying some Dutch livestock farmers to relocate or exit the industry".

In real terms, this ultimately means reducing the number of pigs, chickens and cows by about thirty per cent.

That's what is being protested here - a deliberately shrinking of the farming sector, impacting the livelihood of thousands of farmers, and the food supply of literally hundreds of millions of people.

A 71-year-old woman was gored by a bull bison Wednesday at Yellowstone National Park, marking the second such incident at the park within three days and the third so far in 2022.

The woman, from West Chester, Pa., and her daughter "inadvertently approached the bison as they were returning to their vehicle at the trailhead," the park wrote in a statement.

The bison charged at the 71-year-old, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Cody, Wyo.

Comment: Live Science notes:
This is not the first time Yellowstone has experienced a period of increased attacks. Between May and July 2015, five people were injured by bison, according to a 2016 report by the CDC(opens in new tab). The highest number of attacks occurred between 1983 and 1985 when 33 people were injured, the report stated. Frequently occurring bison attacks have also been documented in other parks, such as Antelope Island State Park in Utah, where one individual was involved in two separate attacks just three months apart in 2019.
