A bear attacked and killed a jogger on a woodland path in north-east Italy, the first case of its kind, a source close to the case told AFP on Friday.

Andrea Papi, 26, was killed on Wednesday while out running in the mountainous region near his village, Caldes, in the Trentino region. His family raised the alarm when he failed to return and a search team found his body overnight.

He had suffered deep wounds to the neck, arms and chest, and an autopsy carried out on Friday concluded that he had been attacked by a bear, the source added, confirming Italian news reports.

In March, a man was attacked by a bear in the same region, prompting a debate on the dangers posed by the animals, which were reintroduced there between 1996 and 2004.

Comment: On the same day a sperm whale washed ashore in near Grimsby in the UK:
A ten-metre sperm whale is feared to have died after it washed up on the east coast of England in Lincolnshire.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) was called at about 12.15pm on Good Friday to help with a 'large stranded whale' on the beach at Cleethorpes, near Grimsby.

The marine mammal response charity said the whale had been spotted 'upright in the water' at about midday, but by the time it reached the beach it was stranded on its side.

A BDMLR spokesperson said: 'Unfortunately, the tide was rising quickly and therefore there was no way for BDMLR medics to safely access the whale, and it was soon under the water.

'The beach safety team were able to show our medics CCTV footage of the whale before it became submerged, and it did appear to have passed away.'

A 14ft-long smalltooth sand tiger shark washed up at Kilmore Quay in Co Wexford on Saturday.

Scientists believe this is the first official record of the species being found in Ireland's waters.

The smalltooth sand tiger shark, scientifically called Odontaspis ferox, is a species rarely encountered by humans as it is normally found in water more than 100m deep.

Shark biologist Dr Nicholas Payne, an assistant professor in Trinity College Dublin's (TCD) school of natural sciences, "could not believe it" when he received an email from a Swiss tourist who discovered the shark while walking on Saturday.
