The veganism boom does more for food company profits than the planet

vegan processed food
The UK bakery chain Greggs was offering free samples of its vegan sausage roll to early morning punters this week. A friend picking up a coffee declined the offer: "Didn't seem right."

He is not with the zeitgeist on this one. The number of people in the UK identifying as vegan or vegetarian is rising; the rolls are a best-seller; and the moral high ground increasingly seems to be held by those with plant-based diets. Join them, we are told, and we can save our health and the planet at the same time.

Will we? The truth is that the jury is still out on this one. Take the environment. It isn't a certainty that a vast increase in plant-based diets would solve all our environmental problems. The carbon cost of industrial cropping is huge: by some estimates, up to 20 per cent of the world's CO2 output is a direct result of ploughing. And not all methods of animal rearing are equal. Grain-fed animals, raised in desertified feed lots, are environmentally harmful. But any farmer will tell you (I am married to one) that pasture-raised ruminants can help to store carbon in, and preserve the quality of, our vital top soil.

Comment: While it's painted as a counter-cultural movement, veganism is a corporate phenomenon, through and through. The lies that it will save your health, save the animals and save the planet is simply lies being pushed by those who have an interest in none of those things, but only increasing the heft of their wallets. Don't be fooled - following this agenda, no matter how well-intentioned you are, isn't harmless.

Food as medicine: Mushrooms for longevity

mushrooms
The idea of "food as medicine" may be a bit hard to swallow, especially if you have a gourmand's palate. What if you could fight a host of diseases and even increase your longevity, just by adding a few delicious servings of fungus to your diet every day?

Paul Stamets, renowned mycologist (that's a mushroom expert) and TedTalk favorite, fervently believes that mushrooms can save the world. He describes fungi as "the grand molecular disassemblers of nature" due to their transformative ability to generate humus soils from decomposing organic materials. Fungi turn the decay of nature into nutrients for plants, trees, animals, and humans alike. As part of this amazing dance of biosynthesis, mushrooms alchemize Earth's most powerful elements for the benefit of mankind. Fungi produce our best antibiotics, and have medicinal potential for a host of diseases. Certain varieties of mushroom possess psychotropic properties that have been prized since at least the beginning of recorded time, with some scientists even proclaiming that "magic mushrooms" are the key to human evolution. But these beneficial attributes merely scratch the surface of what the fungi kingdom are up to, which is apt, since most of fungi's prolific activities take place below where our eyes can see.

'Anti-vaxx' hysteria continues: Feds aim to end vaccination exemptions

vaccinations
In response to several measles outbreaks that have been reported across the US by the CDC, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee is planning to meet on March 5 to discuss vaccine-preventable diseases and efforts to boost vaccination rates and fight vaccine hesitancy. A House subcommittee is holding a similar hearing next week. Ahead of these hearings, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has warned states offering vaccine exemptions that the federal government may intervene. This attack on exemptions is unprecedented. We must ensure that Congressional members are properly educated about the numerous safety issues that have been demonstrated. We must also respond in force to protect vaccine exemptions from federal interference.

We should say at the outset that to want safer vaccines is not "anti-vax." Reasonable people can ask reasonable questions about vaccination-indeed, we must ask these questions given the risks that are involved. For example, why must vaccines contain dangerous neurotoxins such as aluminum, formaldehyde, and even mercury? When the government pays out billions of dollars over the years to families damaged by vaccines (see more on this below), we have a right to call for safer vaccines. Such sentiments are not "anti-vax," but rather pro-safer vaccination.

Comment: Medical freedom & informed consent under attack
The Congressional Research Service (attorneys who research for Congress) concluded in 2009 that the federal government does not have authority to mandate vaccines for state residents which would necessarily mean that they also cannot remove (or otherwise control) state exemptions, another way of mandating vaccines.
No mandatory vaccination programs are specifically authorized, nor do there appear to be any regulations regarding the implementation of a mandatory vaccination program at the federal level during a public health emergency.
Even without the authority, the federal push-and-shove is coming in the form of the Healthy People 2020 Act which mandates cradle-to-grave vaccines for all ages. Your body becomes the property of the federal government unless we do our job to stop it.

In America, we the people, are experiencing a major breech in the protections afforded to the people under the law. We can no longer depend on the feds to police itself. People must make themselves aware of the tactics now being used against them, stand their ground, and be responsible for the freedoms that are draining away.

We have weaker bones than our hunter-gatherer ancestors - this is what you can do about it

Bones
© BigstockAnalysis of bones from over hundreds and thousands of years ago suggests that our skeleton today is more fragile than that of our ancestors.
Technology is continuously advancing to make our lives "easier", more efficient and often more sedentary. All of this has an impact on our body and, specifically, our bones.

Loss of bone strength is one of the least talked about risks of sedentary lifestyles, but is arguably one of the most important, with osteoporosis related fractures occurring in one in three women and one in five men. There is a direct relationship between the lack of oestrogen after menopause and the development of osteoporosis.

As a society, we are more sedentary than ever before. The use of transport, electric rather than manual bikes, and having our weekly grocery shopping ordered online and delivered to the comfort of our homes are all at odds with keeping active. Children in particular are less active - with computer games replacing "playing out" during a crucial time of development when exercise (especially jumping) can optimise bone strength gains by up to 5.5% over six months.

Research is also demonstrating that what's known as "epigenetic memories" may also be passed down several generations, which means that our lifestyle today could influence gene expression in future generations. If sedentary trends continue, humans are at risk of becoming frailer and more dependent - needing increased support from already stretched health services.

Mandatory HPV jabs for school kids in Florida + 100 Vaccine bills flood 30 States

HPV vaccines
Health freedom is once again under attack in Florida and 29 other states as a tidal wave of legislation aims to coerce and/or mandate an increasing number of vaccines, as well as eliminate privacy rights around your family's vaccine status.

As reported by the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), more than 100 bills have been filed in 30 states proposing to expand, restrict or eliminate vaccine informed consent rights.

This tidal wave of legislation is a near exact repeat of March of 2017's onslaught of 134 bills in 35 states.

Lower blood pressure with a morning walk

Taking a morning stroll can do wonders for your blood pressure, according to a study out Wednesday, especially if you're not moving around much to begin with. The research found that sedentary older adults who walked in the morning for 30 minutes experienced a noticeable drop in blood pressure. And women who also took breaks from sitting throughout the day experienced an even larger drop.

The researchers, based in Australia, recruited 32 men and 35 women for their experiment. The average age of the volunteers was 67, and they were all overweight or obese and reported not being very physically active. They were asked to spend three days in three different ways, in random order.

New study questions practice of desiccation with glyphosate herbicide

crops
More studies needed on health effects of residues resulting from "burndown" of crops with glyphosate
The new meta-analysis showing that high exposures to glyphosate herbicides are associated with a 41% increase in risk for a cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma has focused attention on the use of these herbicides to desiccate ("burndown") crops shortly before harvest.

The authors point to two factors that have led to an increase in the use of glyphosate herbicides. First, in the US, usage increased nearly 16-fold between 1992 and 2009 after the introduction of GM glyphosate-tolerant crops in 1996. In addition, the practice of applying glyphosate-based herbicides to crops shortly before harvest, so-called "green burndown", began in the early 2000s to speed up their desiccation. As a consequence, state the authors, crops are likely to have higher residues of these herbicides.

Comment: Dr. Gilles-Eric Seralini reveals the toxicity of formulants and heavy metals in glyphosate-based herbicides
"It is time society and government wake up to this threat to protect science and public health. They should ban glyphosate/ Round up/GHB as well as round up resistant crops. A CICR-Nagpur reports in April confirmed that Monsanto has illegally planted unapproved Roundup Ready BT Cotton. They should criminally be investigated for poisoning India with arsenic. Monsanto is also promoting the role of Round up (GHB) as a desiccant, poising our wheats, our dals and our other crops. The government needs to ban the use of Round up as a desiccant (spraying poisonous chemicals on crops to dry them faster) and criminally investigate who is responsible for this public health disaster."

Pills

The pill is destroying women's bodies and everyone is ignoring it for money

birth control
We've been told that birth control is one of the great inventions of our time and that we would be foolish not to take it. The truth is, we've been lied to.

Birth control is sexist towards women - and it is incredibly damaging to our bodies. This is pretty ironic, considering we are always told that birth control is empowering, right? Yet even the history of birth control reveals an utter lack of respect for the dignity of women.

Women were the Guinea Pigs

The creation of the pill was sketchy - to say the least. Prompted by Margaret Sanger, millionaire Katherine McCormick funded studies for Harvard Professor Gregory E. Pincus; studies focused on ways in which women could prevent pregnancy without a man knowing.

After years of experimenting various pills on rabbits, Pincus conducted birth control experiments which he claimed were "fertility studies" by exploiting helpless patients in a Massachusetts mental institution. He did not tell his patients what pills he would give them - they were expected to take the pills and suffer the consequences while he documented the results. Men were unable to stand the procedures, as Pincus' experiments caused testicle shrinking and "castration anxiety." So Pincus decided to focus in on women - despite the fact that women also had horrible side effects to his pills; blood clotting, bloating, mood swings, etc

Study shows parents who cuddle, touch their babies may change their DNA

Even though there has always been a long-standing myth that you shouldn't cuddle or hold your baby for too long because you might "spoil" the child, so to speak, there's a new study that suggests that isn't necessarily true. Research claims that parents who cuddle and have as much skin-to-skin contact as possible during the first few months of a child's life might end up changing their DNA.

According to a study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of British Columbia parents should get in as many cuddles as possible during the early years of a child's life, as there's a strong possibility that all of this lovable contact will influence a child later on in life, too. The study, published in the Journal of Development and Psychopathy, claims that cuddles impact a person's molecular levels and as a result, can also change their DNA, too.

The team of researchers in the study followed 94 healthy 5-week-old babies during a four year time period. During that time, the parents of the children were asked to keep diaries and record how many times they were held, cuddled, fed, slept, and so on.
