Another Study Confirms Memory-Boosting Effect of Blueberries

As the prevalence of dementia continues to rise, a recent study has demonstrated that a common food may have a role to play in the prevention and treatment of the condition. A recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has shown that blueberries had a measurable improvement in learning and world list recall, which backs up a 2008 study with the same conclusions.

Dr Krikorian recruited nine elderly subjects with an average age of 76.2 and gave them a daily dose of wild blueberry juice; the subjects received between 6 and 9ml per kilo of bodyweight, which would equate to around 525ml per day in the average 70kg/155lb man. The memory improvements were compared to the performance of a separate demographically-matched group who consumed a placebo drink, ruling out any doubt that the observed changes in memory were attributable to practice effects.

"Because blueberries are high in antioxidants, which have beneficial health effects, they are being examined in many research projects," said Donal O'Mathuna after looking at the study results. "Blueberries are a nutritious and safe food... adding blueberries to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is warranted."

WHO Investigation of H1N1 Pandemic Proves a Whitewash

Image

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that it will be appointing an "independent" committee to investigate the conduct of WHO in the H1N1 swine flu panic of 2009. The investigation is meant to decide whether the actions of WHO were warranted - specifically the declaration of a pandemic. Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, called for a "frank, critical, transparent, credible and independent review" (emphasis added) and then proceeded to a closed-door meeting to begin proceedings.[1]

It is what will obviously be yet another whitewash where a governmental organization investigates itself and eventually comes to a foregone conclusion. In this case, just looking at the appointees tells you what the ultimate outcome of this "independent" investigation will be.

One of the committee members is Dr. John Mackenzie. Mackenzie has direct links with various vaccine and pharmaceutical companies and was influential in the WHO declaration of a level 6 pandemic in 2009.[2] No conflicts of interest there.

Health Insurance Companies Invest Billions in Fast Food Chains

Image
© NaturalNews
Did you ever wonder how health insurance companies drum up future business? It's easy: Just invest in companies whose products cause chronic degenerative disease, driving people towards more health care needs and therefore more health insurance.

And that's exactly what the health insurance industry is doing. A new article published in the American Journal of Public Health reveals that U.S. and Canadian health insurance giants own nearly $2 billion worth of stock in fast food giants like McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell and others.

So profits made by health insurance companies are reinvested in industries that make people sick and diseased, bringing them back to buy more health insurance down the road. It's a pretty clever business model for an industry that seems focused on the almighty dollar and obviously has no concern whatsoever for the actual health status of its customers. If anything, these health insurance companies hope you get sicker!

Meat Industry Lying About E. coli Contamination

Image

The meat industry has been misusing data to make it appear that E. coli contamination of meat is decreasing, said Barbara Kowalcyk of the Center for Foodborne Illness, Research and Prevention.

Executives from the American Meat Institute (AMI) have claimed success in the beef industry's efforts to reduce contamination with the dangerous E. coli strain O157:H7. According to the AMI, inspection data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Food Safety and Inspection Service show a 45 percent drop in E. coli prevalence between 2000 and 2008.

Yet Kowalcyk calls this is a misuse of data never intended for "year-to-year comparisons."

"USDA's E. coli ... testing program is strictly regulatory and was not statistically designed to estimate the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in raw ground beef," she said.

Green Tea Prevents Eye Disease

Recent research out of Hong Kong is indicating that certain substances found in green tea work to penetrate eye tissue and prevent eye disease. Catechins, a type of antioxidant, are one such substance that researchers say helps to prevent ocular degeneration and oxidative stress.

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the paper presented by the research team from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Hong Kong explains how eye tissues, such as the lens and retina, actually absorb beneficial nutrients and protect the overall eye structure from disease. The paper is one of the first of its kind to illustrate this specific benefit.

The growing list of health benefits that can be derived from consuming green tea is noteworthy. It is chock full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that protect the body against a host of different ailments. Vitamins C and E, lutein and zeaxanthin, which are all present in green tea, happen to provide specific protection to the eyes against diseases like glaucoma.

Radioactive Phones

Using Cellphones
© The News
Reach your hand into your pocket right now. Do you feel your cell phone? It is not surprising that, in today's world, cell phones play an increasing role in the lives of people around the world. Over 80% of Americans have an active cell phone service plan on one of the multiple phone carriers in America: and this percentage is still increasing.

As popular as the cell phone has become in modern life, the issues surrounding cell phone radiation have always been controversial. While it has been proven true that electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones can pose a health threat to human brains, many people choose to ignore this fact for the sake of personal convenience.

Last week, National Public Radio - or NPR - broadcasted a story on this very topic and the opinions reported there turn out to be fairly universal. Dr. Dan Wartenberg, a professor at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, is one of the many scientists who is currently studying this issue. According to Dr. Wartenberg, it is still very complicated to design a procedure for testing the harm of cell phone radiation that can produce any conclusive evidence. However, the results they have been able to collect do suggest that radiation emitted by cell phones can be harmful: "It is better to be safe than sorry."

Flashback Fluoride: Worse than We Thought

Image
In 1999 the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a glowing report on the fluoridation of public water supplies, citing the procedure as one of the century's great public health successes.1

Ironically, the same report hints that the alleged benefit from fluorides may not be due to ingestion: "Fluoride's caries-preventive properties initially were attributed to changes in enamel during tooth development because of the association between fluoride and cosmetic changes in enamel and a belief that fluoride incorporated into enamel during tooth development would result in a more acid-resistant mineral."

The CDC report then acknowledges new studies which indicate that the effects are "topical" rather than "systemic." "However, laboratory and epidemiologic research suggests that fluoride prevents dental caries predominately after eruption of the tooth into the mouth, and its actions primarily are topical for both adults and children."

The obvious question is this: How can the CDC consider the addition of fluoride to public water supplies to be a public health success while admitting at the same time that fluoride's benefits are not "systemic," in other words, are not obtained from drinking it?

Teen hammers father to death over computer game

A 14-year-old boy killed his sleeping father with a sledgehammer after his parents told him not to play a computer game overnight and took away the keyboard.

Yaroslav Melnichenko committed the horrible crime in cold blood and feels no remorse for the fratricide, reports Life News tabloid.

Moreover, he told investigators that initially he planned to kill the mother because she was the one to stand between him and the game, but then he thought the father would wake up and stop him, so he decided to kill the man.

In the middle of the night the boy sneaked into the parents' bedroom, covered the head of his father with a plastic bag and landed six strikes with a sledgehammer. The bag was to prevent blood from splattering on him, he later explained to the police.

Eating more foods containing the B-vitamins folate and B-6 lowers the risk of death from stroke and heart disease for women and may reduce the risk of heart failure in men, according to Japanese research reported in Stroke, Journal of the American Heart Association.

"Japanese people need more dietary intake of folate and vitamin B-6, which may lead to the prevention of heart disease," said Hiroyasu Iso, M.D., professor of public health at Osaka University.

The findings on the value of B vitamins were consistent with studies in Europe and North America, although the dietary consumption of vitamin B-6 is generally lower in Japan than in the United States.

Researchers analyzed data from 23,119 men and 35,611 women (ages 40-79) who completed food frequency questionnaires as part of the large Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) Study. During a median 14 years of follow-up, 986 died from stroke, 424 from heart disease and 2,087 from all diseases related to the cardiovascular system.
