Flooding inundates 450 rice farms in Kwara, Nigeria

floods
Four hundred and fifty eight farms under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) anchor borrowers' scheme have been submerged by flood in parts of Kwara State.

The farms are situated on the 3, 200 hectares federal government's Tada-Shonga irrigation land for rice cultivation in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area of the state. The produce was due for harvest in October, this year.

The Kwara State governor, Alh Abdulfatah Ahmed, who led a federal lawmaker, Aliyu Ahman-Patigi, representative of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Elijah Aderibigbe and the Managing Director, Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Mr. Adeniyi Aremu, to the flooded farms, urged the federal government to come to the aid of the affected farmers.

Ahmed, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Yusuf Abdulwahab, said the disaster had hampered the state's quest to showcase it's efforts in rice production.

He noted that the fund for the rice cultivation was sought from the CBN.

Anxious Esperance residents have pleaded for government help after a third attack on a boat by an aggressive great white shark this week.

The incident occurred near notorious attack site Kelp Beds Beach.

More untagged and aggressive great white sharks have been encountered by people in the past two weeks than the two sharks detected by Fisheries' new $100,000 VR4 receivers, installed on Esperance beaches in June.

Fishermen Jacob Oversby, 25, and Luke Christian, 25, were fishing in Wylie Bay last weekend when their 6m boat was attacked by a 3.5m great white shark, the same aggressive shark they had seen two days earlier. After taking just 10 seconds of video of the attack, the fishermen fled.

Margaret River surfer and animal behaviourist Neil Innes said the video showed the shark giving a warning slap of its tail, before trying to "kill" the motor.

After a foot of snow this week, Mt. Bachelor has become the first place in North America to offer skiing and snowboard this early in the season.

Officials set up a terrain park in the base area, where snowboarders and skiers used rails to slide around on the snow.

They're offering free access to the terrain park, as well as free "snow-seeing" chairlift rides for foot passengers only.

"The storm gave us an opportunity to try something new and unique," said Drew Jackson, Mt. Bachelor's director of sales and marketing. "There was too much snow to open our bike trails this weekend, so we thought we'd put something together with what we had to work with - which was about a foot of snow."

The blaze has already ravaged 2,000 hectares, having been fanned by strong wind and the dry conditions.
