Increased activity at Steamboat Geyser after three years sat dormant

The world's largest active geyser has erupted for the third time in less than six weeks.

Steamboat Geyser, in Yellowstone National Park, erupted at around 6.30am local time on Friday morning, geologists said.

The eruption is the latest event in a rare period of activity at the geyser this year, following similar water discharges on March 15 and April 19 this year.

Before this year, Steamboat had not erupted since September 2014.

Rare green flash sunset photographed flickering into even rarer blue in Norway

Green flashes at sunset are rare. Indeed, they were once thought mythological. Blue flashes are rarer still. Yesterday, Ronny Tertnes of Bergen, Norway, saw them both in a single sunset:

"There was a visible green flash in the sunset on April 29th," says Tertnes. "But that's not all. Just before the green flash, there was a very blue glow visible along the sun's upper edge--even more blue than I managed to capture in the photo."

Green flashes are formed when the prismatic action of the atmosphere splits the setting sun into basic R-G-B colors. Temperature inversions create a mirage, magnifying the green into an eye-catching flash.

Comment: From the activity in the skies to the shifting ground beneath our feet, our world is changing, and this is evidenced by the increasingly regular sightings of what once were rare phenomena, as well as sights that have never been seen before and remain unexplained:

Flooding continues to plague parts of central and northern Alberta, with more evacuations issued in Woodlands County and park areas of Grande Prairie.

A critical alert due to high water levels and flooding remains in effect for Woodlands County, around 150 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. Six homes were evacuated a few kilometres east of Fort Assiniboine due to high water levels, Woodlands County spokesman Luke Mercier said Sunday morning.

Ice jams on the Athabasca River have created the high water levels, which have risen rapidly in the Pride Valley area.

Aerial footage Saturday shows severe flooding over Flats Road near Whitecourt in Woodlands County, where 10 people were forced to leave their homes on Saturday.

The road remains closed due to localized flooding.
