Insane hailstorm strikes Jalisco, Mexico - One dead, 40 injured

An unusual hailstorm appeared in the state of Jalisco Saturday leaving one dead and at least 40 injured.

The storm arrive Saturday morning in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Jalisco. Civil Protection of Jalisco reported that hail was measured up to 5 centimeters in diameters. The large balls caused the death of a three-month-old baby and left 40 people injured.

Residents injured in the storm were outside in the main square attending the Mi Banda El Mexicano concert. The storm appeared quite suddenly leaving injured bodies and property damage in its wake.

Oklahoma wildlife officials have warned fisher folk to be on the lookout for a relative of South America's meat eating piranha predator, after an 11-year-old girl reeled in the toothie catch from Fort Cobb Lake.

Kennedy Smith, 11, was having fun by the lake with her grandmother Sandra Whaley when a tug on their fishing line signalled a big catch. However, when they pulled in their lake bounty from out from the water something didn't feel quite right - the fish had massive jaws like a creature from a horror movie.

"I was confused because I knew that fish with teeth are not normal. It was weird. They were human-like and that made it even weirder," Smith told the Associated Press.

This is the terrifying moment a mother-of-two's phone records being struck by a bolt of lightning - as she tried to film a thunderstorm.

Tracey Kutluol, 43, was filming the storm from her living room window when her iPhone was zapped by the thunderbolt at 10pm last night.

The dramatic footage shows Ms Kutluol, from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, joking 'I'm going to get electrocuted' as she opened her window to get a better look at the storm.

The video shows dark clouds and thunder can be heard before a flash of lightning strikes the phone. Ms Kutluol, who was with her children Max, ten and Mia, 14, while filming the video, said her life flashed before her eyes.

Ms Kutluol claims an electric shock ran up her left arm, leaving her with extreme pins and needles. She said it was her new rubber phone cover - delivered just hours before she was struck - that saved her life.

The Civil Defence has urged residents to avoid visiting dangerous areas such as valleys and mountains.

Thunderstorm and lightning claimed six lives and injured many people in Al Dayer in the eastern province of Jazan, Ajel news website reported on Saturday.

All the dead bodies were taken to Bani Malik hospital for further security procedures. According to sources, all the area has witnessed heavy rain.

The Civil Defence Directorate in Jazan has urged residents to be cautious during the unstable weather and to avoid visiting any dangerous areas such as valleys and mountains.

A powerful earthquake on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok killed at least 14 people, injured more than 160 and damaged thousands of homes.

The shallow 6.4-magnitude quake jolted the island in the early morning, sending people running outside in panic and triggering landslides on popular mountain hiking routes.

Scores of aftershocks sparked fear among survivors. More than 120 were recorded, the biggest with a magnitude of 5.7, Indonesia's meteorology agency said.

Local officials have declared a three day state emergency, according to multiple television reports.

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are behaving strangely. Normally, NLCs begin to dim in late July, then fade away completely as August unfolds. It is their seasonal pattern. This year, though, the night-shining clouds are surging as July comes to an end. "We had a mind-blowing display of noctilucent clouds display on July 26th," reports Kairo Kiitsak, who sends this picture from Simuna, Estonia:

"The rippling structure of the clouds was amazing," says Kiitsak. "In all, the display lasted for full three hours."

The state is investigating a fish kill along the banks of the Mystic River near Assembly Row in Somerville.

The fish are all along the banks floating or washed up on the shore at Draw Seven State Park. It's not a pretty sight. The state is trying to pinpoint what caused this and right now believe the warmer water temps may be a factor.

The Mystic River in Somerville is a popular place for people to enjoy the atmosphere near the water, just killing time.

But the regulars were shocked this week to find dead fish littering the banks.

"This is unusual, I've never seen this before," David Mussina told Boston 25 News.

Dead menhaden have been washing ashore on the banks of the Mystic behind Assembly Row just across the river from the soon-to-be Encore Boston harbor Casino.

A veterinarian who's been practicing medicine in South Jersey for more than 40 years called it "the craziest thing I've ever seen."

A beaver attacked a large dog walking with its owner along the Rancocas Creek in Medford Wednesday, nearly dragging the dog underwater.

Dr. William Pettit at Peticote Veterinary Clinic in Southampton, who treated the 95-pound yellow Labrador, said the owner was walking with the dog in a wooded area off Branch Street when a beaver approached him.

Pettit said the dog got between the beaver and his owner, and that was when the rodent attacked, biting the dog's hind leg and dragging it toward the water.

At least seven villagers were killed and two others missing after heavy rains triggered a mudslide
Landslides in northern Thailand, triggered by days of heavy downpours, killed seven people on Saturday and left one missing, an official said.

All of the victims lived in the mountainous district of Bo Kluea in Nan province, where the landslides have also caused damage to houses and roads, Prasit Dussadeewong, a district security official, told Reuters.

"It's because of nearly two weeks of heavy rains. We've warned people of such landslides but did not expect they would be this big," he said.

Landslides and flooding in Thailand usually occur during the May-November rainy season.

Widespread floods in 2011 killed more than 900 people and caused major disruption to industry and dented economic growth.

Comment: Elsewhere across Asia in the last few days landslides have killed 27 in Myanmar (Burma) and 8 in Nepal.
