Now it is firmly ensconced among the climate change cult that eating meat is killing the planet and you must 'eat ze bugs', the same people have a new target, rice.

The Orwellian RESTRICT Act is a chilling echo of '1984' and an erosion of American freedom

Far beyond cracking down on TikTok, the bill envisages frightening powers to control citizens' access to 'unwanted' information.

In an eerie semblance to George Orwell's '1984', the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act, or RESTRICT Act, looms as a dark cloud over American liberties.

Branded as a mere "TikTok ban," this act possesses a sweeping reach that would empower the federal government to designate any nation a "foreign adversary," ban online services and products even indirectly controlled by an entity within their jurisdiction, and severely punish Americans who engage in almost any transaction with them.

Ukrainian troops have shelled the city of Donetsk overnight and some of the rockets fell near the cathedral, where the Orthodox Easter service was taking place, a Sputnik correspondent reports. Ukrainian forces fired a total of 20 rockets at the Voroshilovsky District of Donetsk at around 03:25 a.m. local time on Sunday (00:25 GMT), the Donetsk People's Republic's (DPR) mission to the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of issues related to Ukraine's war crimes (JCCC) said on Telegram. One woman died and six other people were wounded, Donetsk authorities say.

"Toward the morning on Easter night, when the parishioners were at the service, the enemy attacked the center of Donetsk, in the area of the Preobrazhenskyy Cathedral. At the moment, we know of one dead and six injured," acting DPR head Denis Pushilin said.

Sputnik correspondent reported that some of the rockets landed near the Svyato-Preobrazhenskyy cathedral in central Donetsk, where the Orthodox Easter service was taking place (Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter this year on April 16). People were forced to evacuate from the cathedral.

Israeli forces on Saturday restricted Christian worshippers from entering the Old City of Jerusalem to celebrate the Easter ceremony of the "Holy Fire" at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The police tightened restrictions at the gates of the Old City, setting up checkpoints around the area and metal barricades to close off the alleys leading to the Christian Quarters.

Clergy and worshippers, including Palestinians from across the occupied West Bank and foreign tourists, gathered at the gates, with many jostling to get through as police forces struggled to push them back.

Advocates say major trans medical org could 'come crashing down' as judge demands treasure trove of internal documents

The World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) is facing a potential bloodbath, advocates say, after an Alabama judge subpoenaed a treasure trove of documents from the organization as part of an ongoing lawsuit over the state's laws on transgender treatments.

WPATH is a leading advocate of child sex changes, recently pushing to remove any minimum age requirement to undergo sex change surgeries or cross-sex hormone therapy. Amy Tishelman, the author of the "Child" chapter in the 8th edition of WPATH's guidelines, said she changed the guidelines so doctors wouldn't "be sued because they weren't following exactly what we said."

U.S. hospitals such as Johns Hopkins, Stanford and Brigham and Women's use WPATH's guidelines to guide their own practice of treating transgender-identifying children.

A federal judge in Alabama requested WPATH supply documents pertaining to its guidelines for child sex changes in March. Plaintiffs suing the state of Alabama over its restrictions of child sex changes repeatedly referred to WPATH's guidelines in their argumentation.

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk has defended state bans on sex-change surgeries and medications for minors by arguing that people who provide such treatment should be sent to prison.

"Any parent or doctor who sterilizes a child before they are a consenting adult should go to prison for life," Musk tweeted on Friday. He made his comment in response to an MSNBC columnist's claim that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was destroying his state with "intolerant and authoritarian-minded" policies. Florida last month imposed a ban on sex-change surgeries, hormone therapies and puberty blockers for minors.

Comment: Sad when Elon Musk stating the obvious is big news.

A map that will change the way you think about the world's population

Where do people live?

These marvelous spike maps mark out a 3D representation of the population density on each two-kilometer-square pixel of Earth's surface. There are no outlines for countries, yet for the most part we can still see where the land meets the sea.

Credit goes to Alistair Rae, formerly a professor of urban studies and planning at the University of Sheffield. He used the EU's population density data with the mapping tool Aerialod to create these glorious 3D maps.

And the map shouts "India".

This is the global distribution of 8 billion people. The abundance of South East Asia is undeniable, as is the emptiness of the Sahara and the vacancy of Siberia. Antarctica is an invisible continent.

Australia and New Zealand are barely there. We can see how isolated Perth Australia is (where I live).

Hawaii and Auckland likewise, stand apart.

Most maps originally came from Alastair Rae on Twitter in 2020 and later from the Visual Capitalist team which explains:

The height of each bar represents the number of people living in that specific square, with the global map displaying 2km x 2km squares and subsequent maps displaying 1km x 1km squares.

Italy's rampant debt hits historical high of €2.772 trillion, inflation at record high

Bank of Italy HQ
© ReutersFILE PHOTO: Bank of Italy HQ in Rome, Italy, on October 18, 2018. The current monetary policy of the European Central Bank and the continuously increasing interest rates can only show a spiraling-down path for Italy that will inflate state debt and aggravate social inequality.
The Bank of Italy confirmed on Saturday that the country's sovereign debt skyrocketed by 21.6 billion euros in February to hit a historical high of 2.772 trillion euros ($3.075 trillion).

The debt number was described as rampant by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, which added that in 2022, goods and services amounting to 1.909 trillion euros were produced by the country, resulting in a massive 145% ratio between Italy's GDP and debt.

Italy is facing a mammoth deficit this year of 5.6% of GDP, which Italy PM Giorgia Meloni stated in December that she intends to progressively cut down to 4.5% in 2023 and then 3% in 2025. However, funds will result from a higher windfall tax on energy companies and worthy cuts in citizens' income.

Comment: For now, the Western establishment is managing to contain the crash contagion in their economies, by printing more money and 'guaranteeing' savings, but it's quite clear that it's only delaying the inevitable:

Merit Over Identity: Dismantling DEI bureaucracies is the key to reviving American universities

university students

Editor's note: The following is adapted from the author's remarks at a debate arguing the resolution, "Resolved, that academic DEI programs should be abolished," co-hosted by the MIT chapter of the Adam Smith Society and the MIT Free Speech Alliance on April 4.

I start from the following proposition: being female is not an accomplishment. My being female should play no role in my being hired for a job. Of course, my sex undoubtedly has made me the target of sex preferences on numerous occasions, thus casting doubt on any actual qualifications I might presume to possess.

My being female should be particularly irrelevant in a university. Until recently, universities were dedicated to the Enlightenment ideal of universal knowledge. A male Chinese engineer and a female Nigerian engineer may have no spoken language in common, but they can communicate through the universal languages of mathematics and physics. Whether the buildings they erect stand or fall depends not on their nationality or sex but on their mastery of engineering principles.

I will go further. Being black, gay, or gender-fluid are also not accomplishments, and should have nothing to do with faculty hiring or student admissions. The only thing that should matter when, say, a medical school hires a researcher in pancreatic cancer is whether that oncologist is the best in his field.

The diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bureaucracy is the nemesis of the Enlightenment ideal of knowledge. It puts relentless pressure on every academic department to hire on the basis of race and sex, not on the basis of intellectual achievement. Every faculty search today is a desperate effort to find even remotely qualified minority or female candidates. Being female or a non-Asian minority confers an enormous advantage in the hiring and tenure process.

Comment: Consider the following quotation from Andrew Lobaczewski's Logocracy:
With regard to preventive activities based on a deeper understanding of causality, this can be illustrated by a very current example in Poland. Article 70 paragraph 1 of the Constitution stipulates: "Everyone has the right to education. Education up to the age of 18 shall be compulsory." If someone wanted to invent a more perfidious way of degrading an individual who is too poorly gifted to comprehend the curriculum and of developing in him a complex of inadequacy, a conviction of the stupidity of normal people, as well as hostility towards those who are gifted, than the compulsion to sit at a school desk, he would be in no small trouble. Therefore, if we try to carry out the provision of the said paragraph of the constitution, we must be prepared for more and more high school graduates to pay for it with suffering and even with their lives. Therefore, this provision of the constitution should be considered both unenforceable in practice and also — criminogenic. As such, it should be declared null and void.

Compulsory schooling was appropriate because many parents did not understand the need for it, at a time when illiteracy and a lack of necessary education impeded social development. Today it is a relic. In a logocratic system, a suitably adjusted family law should provide a more natural solution to these matters, taking into account the talents of individuals and other psychologically understandable aspects.

The Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has escaped unhurt after he was apparently targeted by an explosive device on Saturday morning. It comes less than a year after the country's former prime minister, Shinzo Abe, was shot dead while making a campaign speech.

Kishida was safely evacuated after the incident, while a suspect - named by Japanese media as Ryuji Kimura, 24, a resident of Hyogo prefecture - was arrested at the scene, reports said.

Kishida was visiting Saikazaki port in Wakayama prefecture, western Japan, to support his ruling Liberal Democratic party's candidate in a local election when a device exploded.
