Local authorities in two regions of western Ukraine have banned the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), this week.

The country's biggest religious institution is canonically linked to the Moscow Patriarchate - the largest Orthodox Church in the world, with 150 million worshippers around the globe.

Officials in Ukraine's northwestern Rovno Region, which borders Belarus, were the first to ban the UOC. The 55 lawmakers present at an emergency session on Monday supported the move in a unanimous vote, the local parliament said in a statement.

Union activists barged into the Paris headquarters of luxury goods company LVMH (LVMH.PA) on Thursday, saying the French government should shelve plans to make people work longer for their pension and tax the rich more instead.

In a 12th day of nationwide protests since mid-January, striking workers also disrupted garbage collections in Paris and blocked river traffic on part of the Rhine in eastern France.

"You're looking for money to finance pensions? Take it from the pockets of billionaires," said Sud Rail union leader Fabien Villedieu, as the LVMH headquarters filled with red smoke from flares. The protesters then left peacefully.

Israeli flag burned, fireworks set off, at basketball game in Greece

A basketball game between Hapoel Jerusalem and AEK Athens Wednesday in the Greek capital descended into chaos when local fans burned an Israeli flag, launched fireworks and threw rocks at Israeli fans.

Images showed a banner hung on the stands with the text "The capital of Palestine is Jerusalem," referencing the historic dispute between Israel and the Palestinians over the holy city.

An official from Hapoel Jerusalem told Channel 12 news that some fans were lightly injured during the incident. The game was paused briefly due to the fireworks, and police did not allow fans to leave the arena.

Comment: Whilst the incident is indeed noteworthy, speaking out against the relentless (real) pogroms that Palestinians are forced to endure is becoming increasingly common in countries that recognize the crimes against humanity Israel is responsible for.

Alleged mastermind behind military blogger's murder identified

Yury Denisov

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has named Ukrainian citizen Yury Denisov as the organizer of the assassination of military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky at a St. Petersburg café earlier this month.

According to the agency, Denisov traveled to Russia from Kiev via Latvia in February. He used an intermediary to deliver the bomb to a woman who brought it to the St. Petersburg café where Tatarsky was hosting a talk on April 2.

The subsequent explosion killed the blogger and injured dozens of other people. Denisov left Russia the next day, traveling through Armenia and Turkey, the FSB claimed.

Before the assassination was carried out, the agency claims Denisov spent time in Moscow Region collecting intelligence on Tatarsky, the statement added. Russia is formulating an international arrest warrant for the suspect.

The FSB has released several images of Denisov, including of him apparently passing customs control at the Russian border. Photos were also released of his Ukrainian driver's license and a redacted contract for the purchase of a used car in Moscow.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has expanded Twitter's product offerings in an apparent bid to compete with blogging platform Substack, tweeting on Thursday that users can "apply to offer your followers subscriptions of any material, from longform text to hours long video!"

The billionaire explained that "Twitter will keep none of the money" users make during the next 12 months, meaning they can earn 70% of the cost of iOS and Android subscriptions and about 92% for web subscriptions.

After the first year, smartphone returns drop to 15%, though Musk promised Twitter would "add a small amount on top of that, depending on volume."

Twitter will even help promote subscription users, the Tesla tycoon pledged, claiming "our goal is to maximize creator prosperity."

"At any point, you can leave our platform and take your work with you," Musk continued, adding, "Easy in, easy out."

The supposedly no-strings-attached subscription plan was announced just days after Substack's own Notes platform went live. Notes allows users to post short-form content and share links and images in a manner similar to tweets without leaving Substack, and Musk is widely believed to see it as a direct threat.

Musk pushes Twitter into finance

Twitter has partnered with trading and investing platform eToro to offer platform users access to real-time prices for cryptocurrencies, stocks and other assets, and to enable the trading of those instruments.

According to eToro's statement on Thursday, the trading data will be available through Twitter's cashtags feature, which was rolled out in 2012, allowing users to interact with content around an asset by inserting a dollar sign in front of the ticker.

With the eToro partnership, Twitter cashtags will be expanded to cover far more instruments and asset classes, an eToro spokesperson reportedly told CNBC.

Twitter users will also be able to click a button that says "view on eToro," to get information about the asset and decide whether to invest.

"As we've grown over the past three years immensely, we've seen more and more of our users interact on Twitter [and] educate themselves about the markets," eToro's Chief Executive, Yoni Assia, said in an interview with CNBC.

"There is very high-quality content, real-time content on financial analysis of companies and what's happening around the world. We believe this partnership will enable us to reach those new audiences [and] connect better the brands of Twitter and eToro," the CEO said.

An estimated 18,000 milking cows were killed, and one person was left critically injured, after an explosion ripped through a Texas dairy farm on Monday. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blast.

The Castro County Sheriff's Office confirmed with Fox News Digital the cows were in a holding area before being brought in for milking when the fiery blast engulfed the Southfork Dairy Farm in Dimmitt.

The explosion rocked nearby houses and a pall of smoke could be seen 30 miles away.

Very few cows in the holding area survived, officials told local outlet KFDA.

The Animal Welfare Institute estimated the incident is the deadliest barn fire in Texas and deadliest involving cattle since the organization started tracking the fires in 2013, KFDA reported.

A giant plume of intense, dark smoke could be seen from the farm, according to images and video posted on social media in the aftermath of the event.

Hundreds forced from Indiana homes as plastics fire burns

© AP Photo/Michael ConroyFirefighters walk out of the site of an industrial fire in Richmond, Ind., Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Authorities urged people to evacuate if they live near the fire. The former factory site was used to store plastics and other materials for recycling or resale.
An evacuation order affecting more than 1,000 people remained in place Wednesday night around a large industrial fire in an Indiana city near the Ohio border where crews worked to douse piles of burning plastics.

Multiple fires that began burning Tuesday afternoon were still burning within about 14 acres of various types of plastics stored inside and outside buildings at a former factory site in Richmond, 70 miles (113 kilometers) east of Indianapolis, Fire Chief Tim Brown said.

He said the fire was contained but not under control. Brown said his goal was to finish dousing flames by Saturday morning but "that's a guess."

"We are attempting to put the fire out. We are not letting it burn. Evidently there's some misinformation out there that we're letting it burn," he said.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 people who live within a half-mile (0.8 kilometer) of the plant were told to leave after the fire began, said David Hosick, spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

The evacuation order remained in place Wednesday night. People outside the half-mile radius who live downwind of the fire were advised to keep windows closed and pets inside.

Brown said the fire's cause remained under investigation and the only injury had been a firefighter who suffered a minor ankle injury overnight Tuesday.

A North Carolina cosmetic surgery clinic appears to have performed gender surgery on girls as young as 14.

The Cosmetic Concierge, a plastic surgery clinic in Charlotte, performed elective double mastectomies on teen patients, including at least one 14-year-old, Reduxx reported.

This month, screenshots of "before and after" photos on the clinic's website were posted on Twitter, prompting outrage from social media users. The images showed the results of "top surgery" procedures, which remove the healthy breasts of females who desire a more masculine appearance. The photos also included the ages of the patients, some of whom were listed as 14, 15, and 16.
