UK acid attacks: Hidden from view and on the rise

Globally, acid attacks disproportionately affect women, but in the UK, increasing numbers of men are reported to be suffering acid attacks, suggesting that the low cost and ease of availability of acid on the Internet means acid is becoming the weapon of choice among some criminals.

"Looking at the evidence from police reports, many victims tend to be young men and the perpetrators are also young men," Jaf Shah, executive director of Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) in the UK told Sputnik. "With acid, there's an attempt to disfigure and mane rather than kill. For this reason, it has become a weapon of choice for that particular purpose, instead of a knife or gun, for example."

Acid-related violence is a hidden crime, under-reported globally. Its many survivors fear reprisals and have little confidence in the police and judicial system to pursue the case.

Fight with prison guards leaves indigenous Australian inmate 'brain dead'

Indigenous inmate dies in Australia

An indigenous inmate in an Australian jail has died after an apparent altercation with five guards reportedly left him brain dead. Authorities say the fight was started by the inmate, while his sister says prison officials have "dirt on their hands."

Wayne Morrison, 29, was allegedly involved in a violent incident with guards at Yatala Labour Prison in Adelaide while waiting for a scheduled court video link appearance on Friday, according to the state of South Australia's Correctional Services Minister Peter Malinauskas.

Malinauskas said that Morrison received "on-the-spot medical treatment and an ambulance was called and he was transported to the RAH [Royal Adelaide Hospital]" following the incident.

Comment: Dudgeon, a professor of Indigenous studies at the University of Western Australia, has written before that the practice of psychology had been part of the "colonizing process" in Australia that had "objectified, dehumanized and devalued those from culturally different groups".

Social Darwinism was used by early Australian psychologists to describe Indigenous Australians as a primitive race, which in turn drove a series of research projects to study the mind of "primitive man". It was, she wrote, "a psychological determinism that has supported a racist agenda".

UK's first food waste supermarket opens

The UK's first food waste supermarket has opened in Pudsey, near Leeds.

Food waste campaigners from the Real Junk Food Project have opened "the warehouse", a store on the Grangefield Industrial Estate. Customers are invited to shop for food thrown out by supermarkets and other businesses.

The food is priced on a "pay as you feel" basis and has already helped desperate families struggling to feed their children.

"The warehouse has absolutely been our lifeline over the past month or so," Kirsty Rhodes told The Independent.

Kirsty was recently diagnosed with a chronic pain condition, leaving her husband with no choice but to leave work to take over most of the care of the couple's three children. Overnight the couple's household income was reduced to almost nothing.

"With three young children and two adults to feed we started to struggle straight away. Luckily we took the plunge to go to the warehouse and it was amazing!" Kirsty said.

Kill and pay with your taxes: Police shooting costs Oakland $1.2 million

The city of Oakland has agreed to pay $1.2 million to the family of a man shot to death by police who found him unconscious in his car. The settlement, which brings to a close two separate lawsuits filed by Demouria Hogg's family, will be split among his mother, two children and one other family member.

Oakland Police officer Nicole Rhodes shot and killed Hogg on the morning of June 6, 2015, after firefighters spotted him sleeping in a BMW parked near Lake Merritt with a handgun resting on the passenger seat next to him. Rhodes and two other officers spent the next hour trying to wake Hogg with a bullhorn, loudspeakers and by firing beanbag rounds to break out the car's windows.

When they finally roused him, officer Daniel Cornejo-Valdivia used a stun gun on Hogg while Rhodes fired two shots into the car, according to an amended complaint. Hogg was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital. John Burris, an attorney for Hogg's son, said that Hogg didn't wake up right away because he was hard of hearing. He said the officers should have given Hogg time to comply with their orders before shooting him. Instead, the family claimed, police killed him as soon as he awoke. Hogg hadn't committed any crime or made any aggressive move that would have led officers to believe he was dangerous, the family said.

Orlando shooter Omar Mateen's 911 call transcript finally released: But timeline doesn't add up

Omar Mateen
Orlando police have released a transcript of the 911 call where Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and said the attack was retribution for airstrikes against the terrorist group.

Comment: Another source of the transcript may be found here. Now, according to the official transcript....

The first phone call comes at 2:35 a.m., when the shooter says "this is Mateen. I want to let you know I'm in Orlando and I did the shooting."

He then refuses to say his full name, says that he killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in response to U.S. military presence in Iraq and Syria, and says that he should be called "soldier of god."

A crisis negotiator in later phone calls at 2:48 a.m. and 2:56 a.m. tried to get information about what weapons Mateen had and whether there was anyone else with him.

Comment: Some questions to ask are, first of all, why now? Why did it take the Orlando police over three months to release these transcripts? Why did it require a lawsuit from media groups, as the article mentions - to compel the police to finally release it? And Is there anything in the transcripts which suggest that the horrible events in Orlando are not as they were presented?

In a word, yes. From this article we learn that no one at Pulse nightclub died until 5:13 in the morning:
What should have been front page news everywhere, somehow got buried amid the official narrative we were given about the Orlando shooting. Judge Andrew Napolitano told FOX News that an FBI transcript indicated that no one died until 05:13am Sunday morning when the police SWAT teams entered the building.

"Here's what is news in the summary - nobody died until 05:13 in the morning, when the SWAT team entered. Prior to that no one had been killed. The 53 that were injured, and the 49 that were murdered all met their fates at the time of, and during, the police entry into the building," Judge Napolitano said.

Consider that the narrative we have been given was that Omar Mateen entered the club around 02:00am on Sunday morning to begin his killing spree, so why was no one actually killed until 05:13am, over three hours later?

So, this makes one question why the 911 call transcripts are being redacted and why the people are not being told the truth across the media about what really took place.

We have been told that 5 to 6 police officers were already in the club for 15 to 20 minutes or more prior to the SWAT teams' entering.

So, what is the truth here? Some claim that 05:13am is the time of death, but how is that when that suspect was not even down until 05:15am? Could it be that some of the people in the club were shot by the SWAT team or by Mateen? With nearly 50 people dead and more wounded, how was Mateen able to get off that many shots? I'm really curious.

...

f that was not enough, police officers have even admitted that they may have killed some of the people. WFAA reports:
Monday, Orlando Police Chief John Mina and other law enforcement officers offered new details about the shooting, including the possibility that some victims may have been killed by officers trying to save them.

"I will say this, that's all part of the investigation," Mina said. "But I will say when our SWAT officers, about eight or nine officers, opened fire, the backdrop was a concrete wall, and they were being fired upon."

A law enforcement source close to the investigation who asked not to be named said a crowd of up to 300 people and the complex layout of the dance club may have resulted in some patrons being struck by gunfire from officers.
And if this doesn't jive with the lone crazed Islamic gunman theory that's been shoved in our faces, or at least the idea that Mateen wasn't responsible for all the deaths, there is also this from one of the eyewitnesses at the club during the time of the shooting:
"There were so many (shots), at least 40... I saw two guys and it was constant, like 'pow, pow, pow'."

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. local time (1700 GMT). Media reports on the issue differ. Some local media say that a man in an Audi opened fire on a crowd at a local football derby, citing eyewitnesses.

At the same time, Expressen newspaper reports that several gunmen on motor scooters opened fire on a car they were chasing through a neighborhood in the southern part of the city.

Cleveland: 7 people dead in one day from suspected heroin overdoses

heroin overdose
Authorities were trying Sunday to discover the types of drugs involved in a spate of overdoses that killed seven people in the Cleveland area a day earlier.

The deaths Saturday was the latest outbreak of drug overdose deaths in Ohio.

Tests were being conducted to figure out which drugs were involved, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Thomas Gilson said. Officials suspect they were either heroin or fentanyl.

"This cluster of deaths is deeply concerning," Gilson said in a statement. "Although there is no clear link between the individuals, this number clearly raises the possibility of a very deadly drug in our community."

He issued a warning to take extreme caution while also advising people not to use illicit drugs.

Lying cops exposed after video shows them severely injure man by sadistically tasering him in the back

Man tasered
Carlos Seals was harming no one and being entirely compliant when Richmond County deputies deployed a taser into his back causing him to fall backward and hit his head. Seals was severely injured during the fall and was forced top pay for his own medical treatment after deputies lied and said he deserved it.

According to the initial police report, deputies claimed Seals was being combative and would not comply. While Seals admitted to using profanity, the video shows he was not at all combative.

According to the police report, one of the deputies deployed his stun gun, but it didn't connect. It goes on to say that Seals is still combative so the deputy writes he reached for his stun gun and it connected. However, this was simply not true.

This attack happened on Aug. 30, 2015, and Seals has yet to receive a single penny for his more than $20,000 in medical expenses.

Henry Giroux on a United States at war with itself: "We no longer live in a democracy"

Henry Giroux
© Jared Rodriguez / TruthoutTo transform our society into a democracy, we first have to dismantle the myth of democracy as currently defined.
"Too many people today accept the notion that their fate is solely a matter of individual responsibility, irrespective of wider structural forces," writes cultural critic and theorist Henry A. Giroux, in his new book, America at War with Itself. "This much promoted ideology, favored by the rich, suggests that human relations boil down to competition and combat. People today are expected to inhabit a set of economic relations in which the only obligation is to fight for one's own self-interest." This troubling trend is not only profoundly anti-democratic, but also works to eliminate structural, systemic and social concerns from public discourse, creating what Giroux has described as "organized powerlessness."

In the following interview, Giroux - a professor for scholarship in the public interest at McMaster University and a member of Truthout's board - explains the background to the war metaphor and deconstructs its everyday use in the US. Finally, he evokes a politics of possibility which begins by making visible the linkages among a vast array of issues that undermine democracy.
