Children who do well in school are more likely to smoke weed and drink alcohol as teens and adults, but less likely to smoke cigarettes, according to a new study.

The study, carried out on more than 6,000 young people in England over a 7-year period by University College London researchers James Williams and Gareth Hagger-Johnson, has been published in the British Medical Journal.

Its aim was to determine the link between childhood academic ability and the use of cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco in English teenagers.

Academic ability was defined in the study by results of a nationwide test taken by 11-year-olds which assessed their prowess in English, maths, and science. The research found that higher achieving children are more likely to smoke weed in their late teens than their peers.

An Egyptian man accused of raping a 20-month-old girl will soon face trial over the charges, according to local media. Prosecutors say the defendant has confessed to the crime.

The man was arrested on Friday after allegedly kidnapping the baby girl on the same day as she played in front of her house in Belqas village, located in the Nile Delta governorate of Daqahliya, Ahram Online reported.

The 35-year-old then took her to a secluded area and raped her, according to investigations conducted by the prosecution. He later fled the scene, leaving her in a pool of her own blood, according to Egypt's Youm7 newspaper.

The toddler was later found by residents and taken to a nearby hospital where she received emergency surgery for vaginal bleeding. She suffered heavy blood loss, Al Arabiya reported, citing local media.

She was later released from hospital.

The Egyptian prosecution referred the man for trial on Monday evening, according to Ahram Online. However, Al Arabiya said the prosecution has merely ordered a four-day detention for the man, pending further investigation.

The man has reportedly confessed to the crime, according to the prosecution.

A Nigerian woman held at Britain's most infamous immigration detention center has pleaded with the authorities not to send her back to her home country, where her ex-husband is allegedly waiting to kill her.

The unnamed mother-of-four, who came to Britain seeking asylum after being persecuted in Nigeria for being a lesbian, shared details of her ordeal with Detained Voices ahead of her scheduled deportation next week.

"I claimed asylum which was refused because of my sexuality. I am a lesbian which is not ok in Nigeria," the woman said.

"Last week my friend called from Nigeria, she is looking after my four children in Nigeria. My ex-husband called her, he is trying to take my children away from her. She has been forced to leave their home with my children.

"My ex-husband said he knows I am being deported next week. He is waiting for me. He is planning to kill me."

D.C.: 500 kids missing; police advise teens to stay home to avoid sex trafficking

missing teens
After over 500 juveniles were reported missing in D.C. since the beginning of 2017, and a letter signed by several congressional officials requested federal assistance from the Justice Department in investigating the matter, a DC police commander, when asked, "What preventative measures can young people take, specifically so they don't become a victim of human trafficking?" responded that the best advice for young people was to — "Stay home, it's as simple as that."

It was during an interview last Wednesday with Chanel Dickerson, the new commander of the D.C. Police Youth and Family Services Division, on the Joe Clair Morning Show, when she was asked about the reasons for the seemingly large increase in missing teens - a sentiment she pushed back against - and what families can do to mitigate the issue when she gave the controversial response.

Joe Clair: What preventative measures can young people take, specifically so they don't become a victim of human trafficking?

Dickerson: Stay home, it's as simple as that. If they stay home, it reduces the risk. I'm not saying that's the fix-all but that's where we have to start. We have to start small, this is a problem and it'll take a community effort, but we have to start small.

Good cop testifies against fellow officers who launched a brutal attack on an innocent man

On the night of June 24, 2016, Frank Baker 'fit the description' of a 'black man' in the area, so he was attacked by police and their K9. For several minutes, Baker was beaten, tasered, and viciously mauled by their K9. Also at the scene that fateful night was officer Tony Spencer — whose dashcam recorded the violent assault on Baker, who was entirely innocent.

That night, Spencer and his partner responded to a call, which ended up being fake, about a man with dreadlocks wearing a white t-shirt and armed with a gun.

When they arrived on the scene, Spencer and his partner saw Baker and realized he did not look like a suspect.

"There are about 50 people who would have matched that description that night," Spencer said of Baker. "He is not acting agitated. To me, he does not appear to be engaged in a fight. He did not appear to have run from a fight ... so we continue to roll through."

However, just after they passed Baker, two less experienced and far more violent cops showed up, pulled out their guns, and unleashed a dog.

Former police chief works to end the life-destroying war on drugs

Chief Norm Stamper
There is no evidence that the war on drugs has made the American people safer, more healthy, or more free. Contrarily, prohibition has proven to yield some catastrophic results. Incredible numbers of otherwise law-abiding citizens have had their lives destroyed due to corrupt anti-drug laws which protect the pharmaceutical and private prison industries. Families have been torn apart and patients have been denied medical treatment options such as cannabis oil for seizures due to these failed policies and hysteria surrounding drug use.

Former police Chief Norm Stamper agrees and has been fighting the failing war on drugs for over a decade. Norm spent most of his life serving as an officer for the San Diego Police Department from 1966-1994. He later became Seattle Police Chief from 1994-2000, and now he works as an advisory board member for LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) and NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws).

Norm believes that current drug policy not only wastes an enormous amount of time and money, but leads communities to view the police as a "military-like occupier presence" as opposed to the classic community policeman that existed before the war on drugs was declared. He even goes so far as to call it "the most damning and destructive social policy since slavery."

UK police roll out unprecedented drone air force to track 'anti-social behavior'

The Devon and Cornwall police force, tasked with the patrol of the largest geographical area in England, are pioneering perpetual drone surveillance by establishing an unprecedented 24-hour drone surveillance of its patrol area set to begin this summer.

The police drones, also identified as "unmanned aerial systems," have undergone smaller tests last year. Multiple reports state that the drones will mostly be used for locating crime suspects and missing persons as well as surveillance of crime scenes.

Steve Barry, the UK's National Police Chiefs' Council spokesman regarding police drones, touted the cost savings of choosing these devices rather than deploying police helicopters; according to a report from The Daily Mail, Barry predicts "forces across Britain would soon be using them as they are cheaper than helicopters and can perform some duties of bobbies on the beat." The does not specify how deeply these police drones will be able to inspect individuals, including in regards to audio capacity.

Upon her release from the hospital, Cevario will be arrested and charged with possession of explosive material with intent to create a destructive device and possession of incendiary material with intent to create a destructive device, the sheriff's office said.
