Islamic Council Norway has hired a woman that wears a traditional Islamic full-face veil, the niqab, as its communications officer, sparking criticism from Norwegian politicians, who say it will undermine understanding and trust.

At the annual meeting last weekend, Leyla Hasic, 32, was appointed as a communications officer by the Islamic Council Norway (IRN), an umbrella organization for Islamic communities and organizations in Norway, local media reported.

According to Hasic's job description, which was seen by broadcaster NRK, she will be involved in communications work, application writing, and IT operations.

Norwegian politicians have criticized Hasic's appointment, saying it won't contribute to improving dialogue between Muslims and the rest of society.

In fact, Culture Minister Linda Hofsted Helleland says it will have the opposite effect and lead to "less understanding."

Close to 150 refugees feared dead from capsized boat in Mediterranean

A rubber boat packed with refugees has sank in the Mediterranean, with the presumed sole survivor saying that he believes all other passengers drowned, the International Migration Organization (IOM) says.

The 16-year-old Gambian boy told United Nations officials that about 150 were on board when the ship capsized off Libya earlier this week.

The UN refugee agency said on Wednesday that some 146 refugees, among them children and several pregnant women, were feared missing after the capsizing.

The agency said the Gambian was interviewed in a hospital in the Italian island of Lampedusa after he was spotted almost by accident by a Spanish military ship sailing in the Mediterranean as part of a European Union operation to crack down on smugglers. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the Spanish ship had found the man while he was desperately holding on a fuel can to survive.

Russians give 'astonishingly warm welcome' to Belgian Red Devils' fans in Sochi

Angelic faces in divine outfits have welcomed the fans of the Belgian national team in Sochi with fluffy cloud-shaped pillows on Tuesday night ahead of a friendly but tense football match with the Russian team that ended in a 3-3 draw.

Wearing feathered wings and halos, young girls dressed as angels greeted the Belgian Red Devils' fans outside of Fisht Stadium in Sochi with small pillows reading "Gentlefan. Russian warm reception."

Reciprocating the warm welcome, many of the fans seemed astonished at first. Some visitors broke into an impromptu chant: "We love you Sochi, we do, oh Sochi we love you." Others welcomed the angels with hugs and group selfies.

EU government representatives reject GM maize crops in second critical vote

EU rejects GM maize
While no qualified majority was reached, the number of rejections shows that GMO opposition clearly outweighs support.
EU national government representatives failed on Monday to support the approval of three genetically modified (GM) maize crops for cultivation in Europe : two new ones and the only GM crop currently grown in the EU.

While no qualified majority was reached [1, 2], the number of rejections shows that GMO opposition clearly outweighs support. It was the second vote by national governments on the European Commission's proposals to approve the three GM crops. The first vote, held in January 2017, had also failed to deliver a qualified majority. Therefore, it is now up to the Commission to take the final decision.

Greenpeace EU food policy director Franziska Achterberg said: "When he was elected, Commission President Juncker promised more democratic decision-making. This vote leaves no doubt that approving these GM crops would break that promise. A majority of governments, parliamentarians and Europeans oppose them, and two thirds of European countries ban GMO cultivation on their lands. Instead of backing risky products peddled by multinational corporations, the Commission should support ecological farming and the solutions it provides for rural areas, farmers and the environment."

Demented! Mexico City subway installs male-only seats sculpted with a plastic penis to 'combat sexual harassment'

Mexico City Subway sexual harassment
Subway bosses in Mexico City have fitted plastic penises onto seats in a bizarre campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault.

The smooth shape of some plastic seats on the billion-passenger network has been replaced with the sculpted shape of a male body.

The upper half of the seat is fitted with a chest, nipples and a belly - while the lower half is given legs, and a prominent, flaccid penis:

The seats are marked "exclusively for men".

Comment: Public institutions are devaluing basic human decency in pursuit of attaining basic human decency. There's a pretty clear problem with this strategy. Such behavior is unacceptable coming from men traveling on the subway, and the same goes for the subway bosses who put together this daft campaign.

Anti-AIPAC Conference: Two-state solution already dead, Israel is already an apartheid state

ilan pappe
Ilan Pappe
"It's like sleeping with a corpse," Ilan Pappe said of the two-state solution, at the Israel Lobby and American Policy Conference this past Friday. "We should all attend the funeral and we can put this past us already." Pappe's remarks - which reflected the theme threaded throughout the day of looking directly into the dark times we are in - were in response to John Kerry's 2014 statement that Israel must adopt the two-state solution or risk becoming an apartheid state. "It's already dead," Pappe said at his keynote address, given at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. For this former Zionist turned anti-Zionist, the day was a refreshing batch of unapologetic anti-Israel lobby and anti-occupation speakers.

John Mearsheimer's keynote warned of grim times ahead, as he focused on what's happened in the last ten years - and what he expects to happen now - since the publication of his book, The Israel Lobby, co-authored with Stephen Walt. He talked about the perpetual special connection maintained between Israel and the U.S. "Israel's relationship with the U.S., which is unparalleled in history," Mearsheimer said, "is almost all due to the Israel lobby."

The poisonous divide between Israelis and diaspora Jews

bomb threats suspect
© Jack Guez/Agence France-Presse/GettyThe JCC bomb threat suspect, identified as Michael Kaydar by The Daily Beast, leaving court in Rishon Lezion, Israel, March 23, 2017.
After many months of speculation, we have now learned the name and identity of the perpetrator of the JCC bomb threats. Michael Kaydar, a Jewish teenage resident of Ashkelon in Southern Israel, has been charged with the crimes. The announcement of the arrest caused immediate panic in American Jewish circles and, not unexpectedly, the American Alt-Right Nazis were thrilled to hear that the suspect is a Jew.

Also not unexpectedly, The Forward, with its intense Ashkenazi Jewish ethnocentrism, published a spate of opinion pieces which expressed great worry about the fact that the Anti-Semite was an Israeli Jew. There was even a "gradation" of Anti-Semites presented by Peter Beinart in the face of all the Trumpworld malfeasance. Forward editor-in-chief Jane Eisner gave herself the final word on the matter in a discussion that provides absolutely no insight into the matter and only adds to the moral confusion.

To be fair, it has been a really long time since America has experienced such a mass outbreak of Anti-Semitism, and the Liberal Jewish community has been deeply shaken by its re-emergence under Trumpworld domination. We should however note that the ditto-head Trumpjews were quick to say "I told you so" and demand an apology from the Liberals. It is interesting to note that Trump made extraordinary efforts to catch the perpetrator in Israel. It would seem that Trump is not completely unaware of his toxic role in the resurgence of Anti-Semitism in this country.

PC authoritarians strike again: University student lost credit on paper for using the word "mankind" instead of gender-neutral alternative

A Northern Arizona University student lost credit on an English paper for using the word "mankind" instead of a gender-neutral alternative.

Cailin Jeffers, an English major at NAU, told Campus Reform that she received an email from one of her professors, Dr. Anne Scott, informing her that she had been docked one point out of a possible 50 on a recent paper for "problems with diction (word choice)" related to her use of the word "mankind" as a synonym for "humanity."

Perverse judge clears Mexican man of raping underage girl because he wasn't 'sexually pleasured'

A Mexican man has been cleared of sexually assaulting an underage girl because he hadn't "satisfied his sexual appetite" and didn't intend "to copulate," a judge in Mexico has ruled.

Diego Gabriel Cruz Alonso was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in the city of Boca del Rio in Veracruz state some 320 kilometers east of Mexico City in 2015.

Judge Anuar Gonzalez Hemadi ruled on Monday that the crime had not been proven and the man should be immediately released, arguing that, while the man had touched the victim and penetrated her with his fingers, he had acted without sexual intent and was, thus, not guilty of assault.

Cruz Alonso "touched the minor and, at the same time, did not intend to reach a vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse," the judge's statement said, as reported by Mexican media.
