Former Iranian president Rafsanjani, dead of heart attack at age 82

Former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died in hospital on Sunday after suffering a heart attack, the ISNA and Fars news agencies reported.

Rafsanjani, who was 82, was a pivotal figure in the foundation of the Islamic republic in 1979.

He had been admitted to the Shohadaa Hospital in northern Tehran, one of his relatives, Hossein Marashi, was quoted as saying by the agencies.

Rafsanjani served as president twice between 1989 and 1997.

He was badly beaten in the 2005 presidential election by hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a conservative backlash.

But rather than retreating from public view because of that humiliation, he remained in the limelight, emerging as a moderate counter-figure to the ultra-hardliners clustered around Ahmadinejad, under whom Iran's relations with the West plummeted.

Tip of the iceberg: Interpol says ICSE database helped identify 10,000 child sex abuse victims over past 5 years

Interpol's International Child Sexual Exploitation (ICSE) database has identified 10,000 victims of child sex abuse around the world since 2011, the press service of the organization said Monday.

The ICSE database was created in 2011 and 49 countries are maintaining access to it.

"Whilst we are pleased to have assisted law enforcement around the world identify and rescue 10,000 victims of child abuse, this is just the tip of the iceberg," Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock said as quoted in a statement by the press service.

According to the statement, the ICSE database enables Interpol's experts to use sophisticated image and video comparison software to find connections between locations, abusers and victims.

"In one case, officers in the UK were able to identify and arrest a suspected abuser and rescue the victim just 10 hours after images were shared via the ISCE database," the press service said.

A truck rammed into a crowd of soldiers in Jerusalem, killing four and injuring about 15. The driver of the truck was shot in response to the attack. PM Netanyahu said the perpetrator may have been a supporter of the terrorist group Islamic State.

"It is a terrorist attack, a ramming attack," a police spokeswoman said on Israel Radio.

Police said three men and one woman, all in their 20s, were killed. It added that the truck driver targeted a group of Israeli soldiers who had just gotten off a tourist bus.

The driver was killed in less than a minute after ploughing through the crowd. Soldiers as well as a civilian tour guide armed with a handgun were responsible for gunning down the attacker.

"Politically correct" students demand white philosophers including Plato and Descartes be dropped from university syllabus

Immanuel Kant
The works of Immanuel Kant, above, might not be on the list for students at SOAS after they demanded more works from African and Asian philosophers
They are titans of philosophy, without whose work an understanding of the subject is all but inconceivable.

But now students at a University of London college are demanding that such seminal figures as Plato, Descartes, Immanuel Kant and Bertrand Russell should be largely dropped from the curriculum simply because they are white.

A South Korean Buddhist monk is in critical condition after setting himself on fire to protest the country's settlement with Japan on compensation for wartime sex slaves, officials said Sunday.

The 64-year-old monk suffered third-degree burns across his body and serious damage to vital organs. He's unconscious and unable to breathe on his own, said an official from the Seoul National University Hospital, who didn't want to be named citing office rules.

The man set himself ablaze late Saturday during a large rally in Seoul calling for the ouster of impeached President Park Geun-hye, police said. In his notebook, the man called Park a "traitor" over her government's 2015 agreement with Japan that sought to settle a long-standing row over South Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery by Japan's World War II military, police said.

Under the agreement, Japan pledged to fund a Seoul-based foundation that was set up to help support the victims. South Korea, in exchange, vowed to refrain from criticizing Japan over the issue and try to resolve the Japanese grievance over a bronze statue representing wartime sex slaves in front of its embassy in Seoul.

UN observers may be fired for dancing with FARC rebels at NYE party

More UN observers are currently under investigation over allegedly dancing with Colombian FARC rebels during a New Year's Eve party, a UN source said. The UN mission has already fired several observers seen in the video. "It is under investigation. And the UN mission in Colombia will take whatever steps may be necessary. We are totally committed to being impartial," the source told AFP. It is not yet clear how many people are currently involved in the investigation.

The scandal erupted on January 1, when Colombian media released a video in which several UN observers dressed in their pale-blue uniform vests were seen dancing with FARC rebels at a party.

In response to the video a day later, the UN mission in Colombia said that their behavior is "inappropriate and does not reflect the values of professionalism and impartiality of the UN Mission." On Thursday, the UN sacked three observers who "took part in celebrations at a FARC-EP Temporary Pre-Grouping Point on December 31 2016," according to the UN statement. Their supervisor was also fired.

"The UN Mission reiterates its determination to verify in full impartiality the parties' commitments towards the cease-fire, the cessation of hostilities and the laying down of arms," the mission added. A UN source later told AFP that these observers "will no longer work for the UN mission in Colombia and will return to their countries of origin."

Comment: Party, New Year's Eve...sounds cool and innocent. The concern is the familiarity and fraternizing that biases objectivity.

Heroic cops re-set the bar by disarming knife wielding suspects WITHOUT killing them

There are at least a half-dozen ways for a police officer to stop a knife-wielding subject, rather than employing lethal force with a firearm. All too often, however, as The Free Thought Project has faithfully reported, officers choose the latter, rather than attempt to resolve a knife encounter peacefully. That's because they know all they have to say is "I was in fear for my life" and they will likely be exonerated for killing a knife-wielding suspect. Fortunately, the following story has a happy ending.

Miami-Dade police officers responded to a 911 call on November 15th. The mentally disturbed man was the one who actually called the emergency line and promised he would "hurt officers" upon their arrival. But fortunately, the two officers who arrived on the scene were not cowards, neither were they uneducated or untrained. The police officers pleaded with the man to put down the knife, even though he again threatened them if they tased him he would hurt them.

"Come on, buddy. Come on, don't do this. I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to hurt you, put it down," the officer said. The other officer on scene also warned the bystanders to clear out of the way just in case they were forced to shoot the man. "Cross fire! Get out of the way!" he yelled. "Listen dude, relax, relax, just come on, drop it," the other patrolman said. "Listen to me. Come on, talk to me brother. Look at me," he continued trying to make a connection with the man, who at one point identified himself as a "father."

Comment: It is encouraging to see that there are still police capable of thinking critically before resorting to excessive force!

The Schiller Institute New York City Chorus sang the Russian and US national anthems to honor the members of the world-renowned Alexandrov Military Ensemble, who perished in a plane crash on December 25.

The performance took place during a wreath laying ceremony at the Teardrop Memorial in Bayonne, New Jersey on Saturday.

Comment: Obama could learn a lot from these folks. From the video:
"It is at times like this that we are neither Americans, nor Russians, but we are human beings who feel the loss, and genuinely wish peace and happiness to one another."
