Flashback How blockchain technology will probably change the world

Blockchain Ethereum-Logo
As early as 1981, inventors were attempting to solve the Internet's problems of privacy, security, and inclusion with cryptography. No matter how they reengineered the process, there were always leaks because third parties were involved. Paying with credit cards over the Internet was insecure because users had to divulge too much personal data, and the transaction fees were too high for small payments. In 1998, Nick Szabo wrote a short paper entitled "The God Protocol." Szabo mused about the creation of a be-all end-all technology protocol, one that designated God the trusted third party in the middle of all transactions. His point was powerful: Doing business on the Internet requires a leap of faith.

A decade later in 2008, the global financial industry crashed. Perhaps propitiously, the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto - who may or may not be an Australian entrepreneur named Craig Wright - outlined a new protocol for a peer-to-peer electronic cash system using a cryptocurrency, or digital currency, called Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies are different from traditional fiat currencies because they are not created or controlled by countries. This protocol established a set of rules - in the form of distributed computations - that ensured the integrity of the data exchanged among these billions of devices without going through a trusted third party. This seemingly subtle act set off a spark that has excited, terrified, or otherwise captured the imagination of the computing world and has spread like wildfire everywhere.

Comment: Is the blockchain an image of the future cashless society? There are certainly some positives in the tech's potential. So, everybody put on their evil genius caps and brainstorm: how can this go horribly wrong? Then, what can be done to mitigate that?

Members of a terror cell that dubbed themselves the "Three Musketeers" have been found guilty of plotting a Lee Rigby-style attack following a partly-secret trial at the Old Bailey.

Naweed Ali, 29, Khobaib Hussain, 25, of Birmingham, and Mohibur Rahman, 32, were convicted after the jury deliberated for 22 hours.

A fourth man, Tahir Aziz, 38, from Stoke-on-Trent, was also found guilty of preparing terrorist acts.

The court heard the men from the Midlands were poised to strike police and military targets on British soil but were foiled by undercover MI5 agents.

Comment: The 3 Musketeers have been sentenced to life in prison:
Naweed Ali, 29, Mohibur Rahman, 33, Khobaib Hussain, 25, and Tahir Aziz, 38, were found guilty of planning a "mass casualty attack."

When police officers apprehended the plotters in August last year, they discovered a partially assembled pipe-bomb and a meat cleaver that the terrorists planned to use in their attack.

Justice Globe, delivering the sentence, said it was only due to the prompt reaction of undercover law enforcement agents that the terrorist attack was prevented. Otherwise, it would have resulted in a "considerable loss of life," he said.

The purpose of the terrorist plot was "to kill or injure and cause terror"and "to promote an anti-Western ideology."

The gang, who were guided by a "long-standing, radical, violent ideology," refused to appear in court for their sentencing.

Ali, Hussain and Rahman, who were the key plotters and would be executioners of the attack, all received life sentences with a minimum of 20 years in prison.

Aziz was given a minimum term of 15 years in prison.

Malaysia's train-operating company is teaching misbehaving customers a lesson by terrifying them with a ghoulish doll that will "haunt you forever."

The creepy doll, named Annabelle, pops up in various locations on the MRT system to keep an eye on customers.

Malaysia's MRT and LRT operator RapidKL wrote on their Facebook page: "Dear valued customers, lately we've been receiving surprise visits from Annabelle. Mind your manners while you're on our trains or....she will haunt you FOREVER."

The transport company says Annabelle's sole mission is to raise awareness of better "social etiquette" among its commuters.

Half of Detroit's candidates for mayor are felons

Half of the eight mayoral hopefuls on Detroit's primary ballot next week have been convicted of felony crimes involving drugs, assault or weapons, a Detroit News analysis shows.

Three were charged with gun crimes and two for assault with intent to commit murder. Some of the offenses date back decades, the earliest to 1977. The most recent was in 2008.

Political consultant Greg Bowens said there are candidates with past hardships in every election cycle. It's not something unique to Detroit or the political arena in general, he said.

"Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges," said Bowens, a former press secretary to Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and NAACP activist. "They (candidates) deserve the opportunity to be heard, but they also deserve to have the kind of scrutiny that comes along with trying to get an important elected position."

Tuesday's Detroit mayoral primary election is the first since the city exited bankruptcy in 2014. The field of eight will be narrowed to two who will face off in the fall.

Israeli Peace Index: New poll shows 2/3 of Jewish Israelis want death penalty for Palestinian attackers

There's a big noise in Israel these days - once again, the discussion of the death penalty for Palestinian 'terrorists' has come to the fore. One has to put that word, 'terrorists', in quotation marks, because the Israeli Peace Index survey published yesterday, asked the question not only concerning applying the death penalty for Palestinians killing civilians, but also, specifically, concerning Palestinian killings of Israeli soldiers. The rate of Jewish Israelis supporting the former was 70%, the latter nearly the same: 66%.

Indeed, this result betrays the view adopted by most Israeli Jews - as the survey itself notes:
"[I]n the view of a majority of the Jewish public, it makes no difference whether the victims of terror attacks are civilians or soldiers."
This view is also reflected by the courts. As I noted in my analysis of the Elor Azarya 'manslaughter' case (both of conviction and verdict) , the court unequivocally and unquestioningly referred to the Palestinian Abdel Fattah Al Sharif (who was shot in the head at close range by Azarya) as "the terrorist Al-Sharif" - even though he was, (allegedly and disputably, as I noted here), attacking an armed occupation soldier as an occupied person in occupied territory.

The right to resist occupation, even and particularly through armed struggle, is internationally recognized, as in United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/33/24 of 29 November 1978:
"2. Reaffirms the legitimacy of the struggle of peoples for independence, territorial integrity, national unity and liberation from colonial and foreign domination and foreign occupation by all available means, particularly armed struggle;"
So, what this is saying is, that about 2/3 of the Israeli public sees Palestinian resistance as criminal, deserving of death.

Seriously? Black rights group NAACP teams up with CNN and DNC to issue 'travel advisory for Missouri'

naacp travel warning missouri
The NAACP is sending a strong message to people of color traveling through Missouri: Go at your own risk.

The organization is circulating a travel advisory after the state passed a law that Missouri's NAACP conference says allows for legal discrimination. The warning cites several discriminatory incidents in Missouri, included as examples of "looming danger" in the state.

The NAACP says this is the first travel advisory ever issued by the organization, at the state or national level. The Missouri conference initially published the advisory in June, and it was recognized nationally at the NAACP's annual convention last week.

"Individuals traveling in the state are advised to travel with extreme CAUTION," the advisory warns. "Race, gender and color based crimes have a long history in Missouri."

Comment: This isn't a joke. Check out the CNN video report on the conference, at which Democrat bigwigs Eric Holder, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and others spoke.

Police issue manhunt across entire US for Oxford University employee and American professor suspected of stabbing man to death

A US-wide manhunt is on for an Oxford University employee and an American professor suspected of stabbing a 26-year-old man in Chicago.

Andrew Warren, 56, is a senior treasury assistant at Oxford's Somerville College, while Wyndham Lathem, 42, is an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Northwestern University in Chicago.

The two are suspected of repeatedly stabbing Trenton Cornell-Duranleau in Lathem's Chicago apartment on the evening of July 27. A Cook County judge issued warrants for the men's arrest for first-degree murder on Monday.

Police went to the apartment in the River North neighborhood after someone at the building's front desk called reporting he had received an anonymous phone call about a crime having been committed in that unit.

Police said the victim had "several lacerations" to the body.
