11th commandment, made by Israeli politician: American Jews should 'stand up' in support of Netanyahu

Rabbi Dov Lipman
Rabbi Dov Lipman, a member of Knesset for the centrist party associated with Yair Lapid.
This happened a couple of months ago in the Jewish establishment, but it needs to be reported. Dov Lipman is a former member of the Israeli Knesset, and an orthodox rabbi who moved to Israel 13 years ago from suburban Washington. He tells American Jews they should shut up about Israeli security policies - meaning, how they deal with Palestinians - but use their "tremendous power" to push the Israeli government to allow greater access of Jews to the Western Wall.

US authorities have indicted 19 people, including 15 Turkish security officials, for attacking peaceful protesters who rallied against the visit of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington DC in May.

While 16 of the defendants had already been slapped with charges in June, Tuesday's indictment by the US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia added three Turkish security officials to the list. They are Muhsin Kose, Yusuf Ayar and Harrettin Eren.

Overall, the indictments are brought against 15 Turkish security officials, two Turkish-American businessmen and two Canadian citizens. Seventeen of those accused remain at large while two of defendants who were arrested in June will face an initial court hearing on September 7.

"All 19 defendants were indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, with a bias crime enhancement," the District of Columbia Attorney's Office said in a statement, Reuters reports.

Thousands of Syrians refugees are returning home from Turkey just in time to celebrate a major Muslim holiday amid significantly improved security, provided to a great extent by the Russian military and the reconciliation efforts within the de-escalation zones.

At the start of the year, Syria's President Bashar Assad estimated that some 4.8 million Syrian refugees have fled the country during the ongoing civil war. Turkey has welcomed almost three million Syrians since the conflict broke out in 2011.

For the past two weeks, those who have been displaced have been taking advantage of the newly created stability in Syria to return home to visit loved ones in time for Kurban Bayram (Feast of the Sacrifice, also known as Eid al-Adha) celebrations which begin on August 31.

Members of the Louisiana Cajun Navy, a group of Louisianians helping Tropical Storm Harvey victims in Texas, were shot at Monday by apparent looters, the group said on Facebook.

The Cajun Navy has become widely known across the state for its response efforts during natural disasters and is made up of different groups. The group of first responders previously provided assistance to Louisianians during last year's historic August floods.

One group of rescuers are in Texas already and more are expected to be on the way. Those who have arrived have brought their own boats to aid in the rescue efforts.

News spread Monday about an apparent incident between members of the Louisiana Cajun Navy and several looters. One of the group members, in a since-deleted Facebook post, said that looters decided to pose as people needing help and attempted to overtake the group's boats. The group said shots were fired at the boats during the incident, but no one was injured.

An $88,000 porn-detection machine is coming to Uganda to halt the spread of "one of the deadliest moral diseases," according to Ethics Minister Reverend Simon Lokodo.

He made the announcement at the inauguration of members to the Pornography Control Committee (PCC) in Kampala on Monday. Lokodo blamed pornography on "escalating cases of drug abuse among youths, incest, teenage pregnancy and abortion, homosexuality and lesbianism and defilement," reported The Daily Monitor.

The minister did not state what information backed up his claim. RT has been unable to find any legitimate studies to corroborate his words.

Denver, Colorado votes to shield illegal immigrants in defiance of federal law

Denver, Colorado has unanimously passed an ordinance, restricting local officials' cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fired back, accusing the city council of deliberately obstructing federal law.

The Denver Public Safety Enforcement Priorities Act bans city officials from asking an arrested individual's immigration status, and blocks immigration authorities from conducting jail interviews without a warrant.

It also allows local authorities to ignore ICE requests to detain an illegal immigrant for an additional 48 hours after he or she is released from custody, in order to provide ICE agents extra time to decide whether to take the individual into federal custody for deportation purposes.

An Oakland baker has become a target for white supremacists and alt-right followers angered by her cake iced with the words, 'Kill Nazis.'

Ashley Shotwell angered neo-Nazis when she shared a video of the cake on social media.

"Order with me thru @hellaveganeats for all of your Anti Fascist Cake needs," Shotwell wrote on Instagram under the video that has been viewed more than 20,000 times, adding, "Tag someone who would love to punch a Nazi."

An ensuing campaign flooded the baker's page with negative reviews, the San Francisco Gate reports. Some reviews claimed Shotwell sold them cakes filled with maggots.

"There were also a bunch saying they came into my bakery and I yelled at them about communism," Shotwell said. "I don't even have a storefront."

This was soon counteracted by more than 1,000 positive five-star reviews from supporters.

University of Maryland will stop playing official state song over ties to Confederacy

The University of Maryland has announced it will stop playing the official state song because of its ties to the Confederacy. As furor over Civil War monuments escalates, some activists are arguing the US national anthem also has racist roots.

On Monday, the marching band at the University of Maryland in College Park announced it will drop its long-time practice of playing "Maryland, My Maryland" before football games. The band decided to suspend the controversial tune to "evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time," university spokeswoman Katie Lawson told the Baltimore Sun.

"Maryland, My Maryland" is set to the tune of the Christmas carol "O Tannenbaum," but its origins lie as a pro-Confederate battle hymn. Among its nine verses is a call to action against President Abraham Lincoln and the "Northern scum." Maryland was placed under military occupation by Lincoln in 1861, when eleven Southern states left the US and created the Confederacy.
