Canada to spend $145 Million to compensate public servants who were victims of past LGBTQ discrimination

canada trudeau Feds to spend $145-million to compensate victims of past LGBTQ discrimination
© CHAD HIPOLITO/THE GLOBE AND MAILMary Lou Williams and Emma Smith met as military recruits in the 1980s, and were imprisoned and interrogated during their attempts to leave the military.
The federal government will spend $145-million to compensate thousands of people who were purged from the public service because they were gay or lesbian, the largest financial commitment by any national government for past wrongs committed against sexual minorities.

The level of compensation for individuals will be determined by an adjudicator based on the degree of harm they suffered, The Globe and Mail has learned. The funds will also be dedicated to creating a memorial in Ottawa for victims of past LGBTQ discrimination and there will be money for education and memorialization projects across Canada.

Following a series of stories in The Globe and Mail detailing unjust convictions of homosexuals in the past, and unjust dismissals of homosexual members of the military and public service, the Liberal government committed to offering an apology for those injustices, and pardons for those convicted of crimes that are no longer crimes.

Comment: It is right that people who have been treated wrongly by their government are entitled to redress and compensation, what's interesting in this case is who the Canadian government feels are worthy.

Not too bright: Belgian artist unable to free himself from marble block had to be cut loose after 19 days

mikes poppe
Mikes Poppe
A Belgian man who chained himself to a block of marble to show the "burden of history" from which artists cannot escape, was unable to free himself and had to be cut loose after 19 days.

In a performance that lasted 438 hours, Mikes Poppe attached himself to a three-metre (10ft) chain buried in the middle of a block of marble in the courthouse of the Belgian coastal city of Ostend.

Poppe, who ate, slept, washed and drew while chained, worked to liberate himself by chiselling the away the stone towards the chain, but eventually had to be cut free.

"This block was symbolic of history, the history of art, which I am trying to free myself from. I discovered that this is not possible. It is burden which I must always carry," he said.

Comment: Certainly a long performance, but art? If anything, Poppe demonstrates that self-imposed victimhood puts the self in a ridiculous situation. That was most probably not his intention, but the results are fairly ironic.

Clergyman wants 4yo royal to find 'love of fine young gentleman'

Prince George
© ReutersPrince George could change same sex marriage rules in churches.. if he is gay, says reverend
Christians should pray for Prince George to be gay, according to a leading clergyman. The Very Rev. Kevin Holdsworth urged the faithful to pray the "Lord blesses George, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with the love of a fine young gentleman."

It is not just little George's love life the reverend is concerned with. In fact, the reason he wants the prince, who is third in line to the throne, to be 'into men' is so the Church of England (CofE) will be forced to support same-sex marriage. When the boy becomes King, he will also be the leader of the Church.

Sweden surprised by common sense, wants more foreign born politicians

Sweden Craves More Foreign-Born Politicians
Sweden, recently voted the best country in the world for migrants, is setting out to justify this moniker, as the Nordic country is intending to shatter the "glass ceiling" for migrants in Swedish politics to boost their representation.

Foreign-born people find it harder to make political careers compared with locals and are less likely to reach positions of power even after decades in the Scandinavian country, new research by the Swedish Institute for Social Research at Stockholm University uncovered.

Comment: This is just common sense.

Although, more foreign-born residents are getting involved in Swedish politics, their number was still found to be disproportionately small even in municipalities with high a percentage of immigrants.

Roy Moore and Jimmy Kimmel engage in Twitter feud over Moore allegations

Roy Moore
© Brynn Anderson/AP
The Alabama Senate race took another twist as Republican nominee Roy Moore got into a Twitter fight with a late-night talk show host on Thursday, a day after claiming that allegations of sexual misconduct against him were the result of a conspiracy that included "lesbians, gays, bisexuals and socialists".

Moore engaged in a back-and-forth with ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, who had planted a comedian at an event in a south Alabama church to supportively heckle the Republican candidate. Tony Barbieri, who has long worked with Kimmel, praised Moore as "a man's man" and insisted of the Alabama Republican: "Does that look like the face of someone who hits on teenage girls?"

Moore has faced multiple allegations that he sexually assaulted teenage girls in late 1970s. A number of other women have come forward to say that he had pursued them when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers.

Comment: It probably would have been wise for Moore to not engage in a Twitter battle with a snarky liberal talk-show host like Kimmel since anything said will simply turned into fodder for cheap jokes and biased accusations. Yet the 'case' against Moore is little more than a smear campaign, which Kimmel is complicit in, regardless of his level of awareness.

'It is just revolting and a total insult to the victims and anyone with any sense of morality or integrity'

Holocaust survivors have voiced anger over a video artwork that showed naked people playing a game of tag in a Nazi gas chamber.

Several Jewish organisations have written jointly to Poland's president Andrzej Duda, demanding to know if authorities gave permission for the footage to be filmed at the Stutthof concentration camp, where 65,000 people were murdered during World War Two.

Artur Żmijewski's film, entitled Game of Tag, was displayed at Krakow's Museum of Contemporary Art in 2015 as part of an exhibition about Auschwitz.

Immigration officers based in New York City arrested 42 criminal aliens released by sanctuary jurisdictions. Thirteen other foreign nationals were also arrested as part of a six-day targeted operation carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers began the operation on November 13 and concluded it shortly before Thanksgiving. In total, officers arrested 55 illegal aliens. Forty-two of those arrested had been in New York law enforcement custody and were released despite ICE having placed immigration detainers on the aliens, according to information obtained by Breitbart Texas from ICE officials.

"Forty-two of the 55 arrested during this operation were released from New York custody with an active detainer, which poses an increased risk to the officers and the community.," ERO New York Field Office Director Thomas Decker said in a written statement. "It is important for city residents to know that although the City of New York releases inmates with active ICE detainers back into their community, ICE will be diligent in its responsibility to find those who come to the United States to prey upon our communities and ultimately have them removed from the country."

Lisbon's red hot housing bubble

Lisbon
We've written a lot about property bubbles in recent weeks - how the bubbles in London and Sydney are bursting, Hong Kong's has just seen the record price paid per square foot (Twice in the same day) and Monaco is building into the Mediterranean Sea to satisfy the huge demand from frustrated millionaires. A bit like Monaco, one of the problems for Lisbon's house buyers is that central Lisbon is relatively small. According to Bloomberg.
