Many Vancouver Island residents took notice as a bright streaking light flared across the skies Sunday.
Described by some as a "fireball" followed by a loud explosion just after 5 p.m., reports of the celestial event lit up social media from around the island — including Saanich, Duncan, Port Alberni and Campbell River.
Some who reported hearing the loud bang said they thought it might have been an earthquake, but B.C. seismologist John Cassidy suggested it may have been a meteor.
According to the description made by the Smart project on their website, a "spectacular fireball" shot across the Andalucian sky on the night of December 7, at 10:31pm. "Its brightness was similar to that of the full moon", says the site.
Madiedo pointed out that the rock that caused this phenomenon, entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of about 86,000km/h, and came from an asteroid. These types of rocks that intersect the Earth's orbit are called "meteoroids".

Most mornings, retired scientist Derek Poulton gets up and checks a special camera.
One of just three in Victoria, his camera at Mooroopna switches on from dusk until dawn every night with the aim of capturing footage of meteors.
And when Mr Poulton checked the camera on the morning of November 29, he spotted something.
"Lo and behold, we had a fireball!"
"Initially I could just see this flash," Mr Poulton said.
"You can process the data as a short video and when I did, you could see this huge bolide [an exceptionally bright meteor] that's moving through the atmosphere. It was very exciting to see that sort of vision."
After 7:00 pm on the 10th, a "fireball" that shines brightly among shooting stars was observed in a wide range of the country.
NHK cameras in Aichi and Chiba prefectures shot bright and shining fireballs flowing down for a few seconds like a tail.
It is said that the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has also received information that fireballs have been witnessed in a wide area such as Saitama and Fukuoka prefectures.
According to the curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum in Kanagawa Prefecture, Daichi Fujii said, "Because the fireballs are being observed and the meteor shower is active, we may be able to find them during the year-end and New Year holidays." ..
