Russia says would consider any Iraqi request for airstrikes against Islamic State

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it would consider any request from the Iraqi government to conduct airstrikes against Islamic State inside Iraq, but said it had not yet received such an appeal, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

It cited the foreign ministry as saying it would evaluate the "political and military" logic of such a move if a request was forthcoming.

In an interview on France24 on Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he would welcome Russian airstrikes against Islamic State in his country and had been receiving information from both Syria and Russia on the militant group.

"Not yet," Abadai told France24 television when asked if he had discussed with Russia airstrikes in his country. "It is a possibility. If we get the offer we will consider it and I would welcome it."

He said Baghdad had also been receiving "massive information" from Syria on Islamic State and also from Russia.

This comes a day after Russia began an aggresive airstrike campaign in Syria.

Comment: This would be another game changer!

Controversial Russian 'foreign agents law' to be amended

Russia fifth columns NGO
© Michael Klimentyev / RIA NovostiRussian President Vladimir Putin chairing a Kremlin meeting of the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, October 1, 2015.
The law ordering Russia-based NGOs engaged in political activities to disclose their foreign sponsorship needs more precise definitions. It could be amended in the near future, President Putin has told Russian human rights activists.

"The definition of political activity must not be vague, it must not be expandable, and there must be only one way to understand it. And in any case we should not fit anything that is not welcomed by representatives of the authorities or Justice Ministry or anyone else under this definition," Putin said at the Thursday session of the Presidential Council for Human Rights.

The president added that officials would formulate the amendments and submit them for future discussion within a three-month period.

Putin made this promise after one of Russia's oldest human rights activists, the head of the Moscow Helsinki group Lyudmila Alekseyeva, asked the president to cancel the controversial law, saying that its great number of minor faults may indicate the act as a whole was poorly written. Alekseyeva also said the non-government organizations that fall under the definition of a foreign agent use all the funds they receive from abroad for the benefit of Russia and its citizens.

In June, the president told members of the Russian Public Chamber that he admitted the possibility of amendments to the Foreign Agents Law, but added that in general the law is fit for purpose.

Earlier this month, the government commission for legislative procedures rejected the amendments to the Foreign Agents Law prepared by the Justice Ministry and ordered that they be rewritten. These amendments obligated Russian NGOs to report all money transfers they receive from foreign sources.

According to the Russian Foreign Agents Law introduced in late 2012, all NGOs who receive funding from abroad (even those partially engaged in political activities), must register as foreign agents or risk substantial fines.

Comment: Unlike the US (looking at you, AIPAC), Russia has recognized the wolf in sheep's clothing that are the NGO's claiming to promote 'democracy' in that country. They are rightly labeled 'fifth-columnist' organizations in need of regulation. However, Putin has promised legislation that will be clear and comprehensible to all. No wiggle room.

Give him a tissue: Saudi Arabia demands Russia end Syria raids, criticizes Iran

Saudi Arabia, a leading foe of President Bashar al-Assad, demanded his ally Russia end its raids on Syria, saying the strikes had caused civilian casualties while failing to target the hardline Islamic State militants Moscow says it opposes.

In remarks at the United Nations in New York, a senior Saudi diplomat suggested both Russia and Assad's other main ally Iran could not claim to fight Islamic State "terrorism" at the same time as supporting the "terrorism" of the Syrian authorities.

Saudi ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi expressed "profound concern regarding the military operations which Russian forces have carried out in Homs and Hama today, places where ISIS forces are not present. These attacks led to a number of innocent victims. We demand it stop immediately and not recur."

"As for those countries that have claimed recently to join in the fight against ISIS terrorism, they can't do that at the same time as they support the terrorism of the Syrian regime and its terrorist foreign allies like Hezbollah and the Quds Force and other terrorist sectarian groups," he added in comments broadcast by Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television.

Comment: Now that Russia and Iran has joined together to help Syria, Saudi Arabia can do nothing but watch and bark.

Lavrov warns UN Security Council ISIS in Iraq and Syria have WMD components

Image
Islamic State militants are in possession of components for weapons of mass destruction, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned the UN Security Council meeting, urging that IS be included on an anti-terrorist sanction list as a separate subject.

"In the vast areas of Iraq and Syria, Islamic State has actually created an extremist quasi-state, which commands an efficient repressive apparatus, stable sources of income, well-equipped army and elements of weapons of mass destruction," Lavrov said on Wednesday at the UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York.

UNSC foreign ministers gathered to debate issues of international security and terror threats, focusing on the Middle East and North Africa.

According to the Russian FM, the situation in the Middle East has "degraded even more" over the past year. "The accumulation of crisis potential came close to the point where we can talk about the destruction of the political map of the region," he said.

Pathetic Western propaganda in full force as Russia is accused of killing civilians in Syria

Image

It didn't take long, after Russia began its anti-terrorist bombing campaign, for social media to be flooded with 'evidence' of civilian casualties. The claims were readily repeated by Western mainstream media.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that it conducted 20 sorties on the first day of the Syrian operation and bombed eight targets in Syria, including weapon and fuel depots and command centers of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) group. All targets were far from urban areas, the ministry stressed.

Virtually simultaneously, reports started surfacing on social media claiming Russia is not attacking terrorists. Instead, it's claimed Russian warplanes attacked residential areas, killing dozens of civilians. Others said there was no IS presence in the attack areas and these positions were actually held by "moderate rebels."

The narrative apparently fitted too well into the familiar 'Russia is the villain' narrative for Western media to pass it by. Journalists asked Defense Secretary Ash Carter for confirmation.

The US aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan has arrived in Yokosuka, Japan as the US Navy's only forward-deployed carrier vessel, Rear Admiral John Alexander said in a release on Thursday.

"Deploying our most capable units forward enhances the Navy's ability to contribute to the defense of Japan and meet our commitments under the terms of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of America," Alexander stated.

On August 3, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier left the North Island naval base in Coronado, California before making its trip across the Pacific Ocean.

Comment: I'm sure Japan is as happy to see this as Abe was of meeting Putin.

The destabilizers of Syria accuse Russia of destabilizing Syria

obama putin
Russia is destabilizing Syria โ€” according to those destabilizing Syria.

In a move many consider to be an act of bitter defiance to the West, the Russian government appears to have significantly increased its military aid to the Syrian regime. This support hinges largely on the provision of providing advanced weaponry โ€” such as tanks and artillery โ€” training Syrian soldiers to use those weapons systems, and Russian-led airstrikes against ISIS. Unsurprisingly, Western media pundits and officials (and their devoted followers) are expressing renewed outrage over Russia's involvement in the Syrian conflict โ€” at the same time, excluding pertinent background information on Russia's historical roots in the region.

Comment: It is typical of psychopaths to accuse others of what they are doing themselves. We can expect nothing more from the western propaganda machine.

On Wednesday morning, the Federation Council upper house of parliament granted permission to the Russian president to use the country's troops in Syria. Kremlin chief of staff Sergey Ivanov said that Russia will use only its Air Force in Syria and it does this on Syrian President Bashar Assad's request.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Russian Air Force began to conduct air raids against the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra inside the Latakia and Hama Governorates in the western part of Syria. These provinces would reportedly be the primary target for the Russian Air Force and the Syrian Arab Army. According to scrappy reports, the Russian Air Force targeted that areas of Al-Lataminah, Kafr Zita, the Jabal Al-Zaweed, Kassab, and Deir Hanna. At the moment airstrikes are aimed on the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda. However, it's clear that the ISIS positions inside eastern Syria will be targeted in the nearest future.

John Pliger: The revolutionary act of telling the truth

Image
John Pilger, speaking at the launch in London of The WikiLeaks Files, with an introduction by Julian Assange.

George Orwell said, "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
These are dark times, in which the propaganda of deceit touches all our lives. It is as if political reality has been privatized and illusion legitimized. The information age is a media age. We have politics by media; censorship by media; war by media; retribution by media; diversion by media - a surreal assembly line of cliches and false assumptions.Wondrous technology has become both our friend and our enemy. Every time we turn on a computer or pick up a digital device - our secular rosary beads - we are subjected to control: to surveillance of our habits and routines, and to lies and manipulation.

Edward Bernays, who invented the term, "public relations" as a euphemism for "propaganda," predicted this more than 80 years ago. He called it, "the invisible government." He wrote:
"Those who manipulate this unseen element of [modern democracy] constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of ..."

Sources reveal Iran troops to join Syria war

Syria battle field
Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria to join a major ground offensive on behalf of President Bashar al-Assad's government, Lebanese sources said on Thursday, a further step in the rapid internationalization of a civil war in which every major country in the region has a stake.

Two Lebanese sources told Reuters hundreds of Iranian troops had reached Syria in the past 10 days with weapons to mount a major ground offensive. They would also be backed by Assad's Lebanese Hezbollah allies and by Shi'ite militia fighters from Iraq, while the Russians would provide air support.

"The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria: soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisers ... we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more," one of the sources said.
