Turkish intelligence has captured a ringleader of the PKK terrorist organisation while he was preparing to flee to Europe, security sources have said.

The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) captured Serhat Bal, codenamed Firat, one of the so-called leaders of the PKK terrorist organisation, said the sources on Friday, on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media.

His location in a Middle Eastern country was determined by the security forces, and his activities were monitored by the Turkish intelligence for a long time, the sources added.

Turkey launches air attacks against Kurdish rebels in Iraq and Syria

Turkey has bombed multiple locations allegedly linked to Kurdish groups in Syria and northern Iraq in retaliation for the deaths of nine Turkish soldiers in Iraq, the defence ministry said.

The raids on Saturday came one day after an attack on a Turkish military base in Iraq resulted in the soldiers' deaths.

The ministry said the attacks targeted 29 locations - including "caves, bunkers, shelters and oil installations" belonging to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the People's Protection Units (YPG), a Syrian Kurdish group which has been a central element in the United States-allied coalition against ISIS (ISIL).

Reuters reports at least 45 members were killed.

Turkey frequently carries out attacks against locations in Syria and Iraq that it suspects to be associated with the PKK.

The defence ministry said fighter jets struck targets in Metina, Hakurk, Gara and Qandil in northern Iraq, but did not specify which areas in Syria. It said the aim was "to eliminate terrorist attacks against our people and security forces ... and to ensure our border security".

The statement said that "many" armed fighters were "neutralised" in the attacks, a term Turkey uses to refer to killed or captured fighters.

On Friday night, attackers attempted to infiltrate a military base in northern Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region, killing five soldiers. Another four died later of critical injuries. The ministry said 15 fighters were also killed.

There was no immediate comment from the PKK, the government in Baghdad or the administration in the region.

Turkey launched Operation Claw-Lock in northern Iraq in April 2022, during which it established several bases in the Duhok governorate. Iraq has repeatedly protested against the presence of Turkish troops and called for their withdrawal.

"We will fight to the end against the PKK terrorist organisation within and outside our borders," Turkey's foreign minister Hakan Fidan posted on X.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was to hold a security meeting in Istanbul later on Saturday, said his communications director Fahrettin Altun.

Also on Saturday, 113 people were arrested for suspected links with the PKK in nationwide raids, interior minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X.

Continuing fighting

Three weeks ago, PKK-affiliated fighters tried to break into a Turkish base in northern Iraq, according to Turkish officials, killing six soldiers. The following day, six more Turkish soldiers were killed in clashes.

Turkey retaliated by launching attacks against sites that officials said were associated with the PKK in Iraq and Syria. Defence minister Yasar Guler said at the time that dozens of Kurdish fighters were killed in air strikes and land assaults.

It was not immediately clear if Friday night's attack and the one three weeks earlier targeted the same base.

More than 40,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict between the PKK - which maintains bases in northern Iraq - and the Turkish state since 1984.

Turkey and the US, however, disagree on the status of the Syrian Kurdish groups.

Over 60 people are being trained in Moldova under the guidance of foreign instructors to carry out terrorist attacks in the unrecognized republic of Transnistria, the region's State Security Ministry said.

"According to available information, special combat groups (more than 60 people, mostly from Ukraine and experienced in combat operations) are currently being trained at the facilities of the Moldovan security services under the guidance of foreign specialists to carry out terrorist acts on the territory of the republic aimed at destroying critical life-support facilities, sabotaging military facilities, capturing or killing the highest officials of the republic and heads of security agencies," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

US carries out new strike on Yemen, Houthis vow 'strong' response despite attack having 'insignificant impact'

Navy destroyer Carney
© Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Aaron Lau/NavyThe Navy destroyer Carney fires missiles to counter drone and missile fire by Houthi rebels in Yemen on Oct. 19, 2023, in the Red Sea. The ship fended off several attacks on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, officials said.
The Houthi movement threatened a "strong and effective response" after the United States carried out another strike in Yemen overnight, further ratcheting up tensions as Washington vows to protect shipping from attacks by the Iran-aligned group.

Comment: Washington is merely attempting to protect Israeli shipping, and facilitate the ongoing genocide.

The strikes have added to concerns about the escalation of the conflict that has spread through the region since the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel went to war, with Iran's allies also entering the fray from Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

The latest strike, which the United States said targeted a radar site, came a day after dozens of American and British strikes on Houthi facilities in Yemen.

Comment: Predictably, the US-UK have now widened the scope of the Houthis blockade to now include their shipping vessels, and at a time when British analysts were warning that inflation was due already expected to resurge and food shortages were looming: UK food shortages 'alarmingly likely' next year, University of Belfast warns - malnutrition cases tripled in 10 years

SOTT Focus: American Citizen Gonzalo Lira Dies From Neglect in Ukrainian Prison

gonzalo lira
RIP
Gonzalo Lira, a prominent commentator on the Russia-Ukraine war imprisoned in Ukraine for speech critical of the country's government, has died after weeks of medical neglect by Ukrainian authorities.

Chilean-American war commentator Gonzalo Lira died shortly before noon on January, 11, 2024 at a hospital in Kharkiv, where he had been imprisoned for eight months since he was accused of justifying Russian war efforts in Ukraine.

Lira came to prominence in 2022 when he emerged as a critical voice in an increasingly dictatorial Ukraine. His arrest in May 2023 on charges of "production and dissemination of materials justifying Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine" helped to galvanize domestic opposition to US funding for the war and led to calls for his release by tech baron Elon Musk and American political commentator Tucker Carlson.

A note written by Lira and provided by his father to The Grayzone indicates his death came after a nearly three-month battle with pneumonia, a condition which was apparently ignored by his Ukrainian jailers until just weeks before his death. Lira's death was revealed by his father, Gonzalo Lira, Sr., who had spent weeks pleading with the American embassy to intervene in his son's medical emergency.

Emails reviewed by The Grayzone show that after learning of his son's illness, the senior Lira urged the embassy to intervene on January 3. In a message to US officials, he noted that Ukrainian authorities appeared to make an effort to conceal information about Lira Jr.'s health from his family and legal representatives. "The medical warden in the pre-trial jail in Kharkiv is not giving information as to the state of his health," he wrote, concluding: "It has been 12 days since I knew his state."

Why Russia didn't veto the UNSC resolution that the West just exploited to attack the Houthis

Yemen blitz
The US-led Western strikes against the Yemeni Houthi rebels Thursday night were entirely foreseeable after the latest UNSC Resolution on the Red Sea passed the day prior. Russian Permanent UN Representative Vassily Nebenzia even warned that this New Cold War bloc would likely exploit that document's passage even before the vote took place, which is why he proposed several amendments that would shatter Western credibility in that event, but they weren't approved. Here's what he said:

"We should not have any illusions about the true goals of the authors of the resolution. This is not about ensuring the safety of navigation in the Red Sea at all, but an attempt to legitimize (post factum) the actions of the aforementioned 'coalition' and have Security Council's endorsement for an unlimited time.

This conclusion obviously follows from the current language of OP3, which introduces a certain 'right of states to defend their vessels against attack', which does not exist in international law. This innovation looks extremely doubtful from both legal and political points of view."

He then had this to say after the document passed due to his country declining to veto it:

Comment: It should also be noted that China didn't veto the resolution either. As it has been seen since the attack, both Russia and China have been vocal in condemning the attacks and highlighting that the attacks are not according to international law, nor have the blessing of the UN security council. Rand Paul launches Haley takedown campaign, nevernikki.net

rand paul
© Mariam Zuhaib/Associated PressSen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a skeptic of foreign policy interventionism, takes issue with Nikki Haley's "involvement in the military-industrial complex."
In a video announcement as unique as the libertarian-minded legislator making it, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Friday delivered his anti-endorsement of Nikki Haley for president.

Paul declined to endorse a specific alternative to the former South Carolina governor, saying that he appreciates qualities in former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and even Democrat-turned-independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

"I'm not yet ready to make a decision, but I am ready to make a decision on someone who I cannot support," he said in the video, which was posted to social media. "So I'm announcing this morning that I'm never Nikki."

Israel genocide hearing begins in Hague

Pro-Palestinian protestors demonstrate during the hearing on the request for interim measures in the case filed by South Africa
© Ahmet Gurhan Kartal/Anadolu via Getty ImagesPro-Palestinian protestors demonstrate during the hearing on the request for interim measures in the case filed by South Africa at the ICJ on the grounds that Israel's actions in Gaza violate the Genocide Convention in the Netherlands on January 11, 2024.
South Africa has alleged that the response to the Hamas attacks on October 7 violated the 1948 Convention.

The UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has begun hearing an application from South Africa accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians.

The submission calls on the court to order Israel to cease military operations in Gaza, according to British state broadcaster the BBC.

South Africa's petition to the court described Israel's actions in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attack as "genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group."

The accusation has been vehemently rejected by Israel.

"The same people accusing Trump voters of subverting democracy are the ones who cheated in every election since the 1960s, lied to get us into half a dozen stupid wars, created Covid in a lab, and then covered that up. You are free to tell them to STFU" — Peachy Keenan
You know why the judge let provocateur Ray Epps off the hook for his antics before and during the so-called J-6 "insurrection," don't you? Well, yes, it was partly because he was acting at the direction of blob officials, most likely the FBI, but possibly the CIA, Defense Intelligence, or some black-box fed outfit no one ever of (but somehow gets half a billion in funding every year). Ol' Ray, pleaded to one year's probation (no jail time), 100 hours of community service (checking books out at his local library?), and a $500 fine. Say, what. . . ? A speeding ticket on the Rockville Pike would probably cost you more.

You remember those videos of Ray on the DC street the day before the riot, importuning the crowd, a commanding presence with his military bearing and red hat, six inches taller than most of the other men around him, yelling, "Tomorrow we need to go into the Capitol, into the Capitol!" At which moment the crowd groaned "no-o-o-o. . . !" and then commenced chanting, "fed. . . fed. . . fed. . . !" They had his number. His use of the word need was especially beguiling, as in, who actually "needed" that to happen?

Army colonel J6 witness: 'Milley is the Don Barzini of the deep state'

GenMill
© Patrick Semansky/APUS General Mark A. Milley
The colonel and Army lawyer challenging the Army's official narrative of the events and leadership decisions during the Capitol Hill protests on Jan. 6, 2021 — a narrative relied upon by the Colorado Supreme Court when it struck President Donald J. Trump from the ballot — told RedState then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley was the black hand operating outside his legal authority to delay the District of Columbia National Guard from responding the protests that day.

"Milley is the Don Barzini of the Deep State," said Col. Earl G. Matthews, the Harvard Law School graduate, who was the senior legal advisor to Maj. Gen. William J. Walker, the D.C. National Guard's commanding general from March 2018 through April 2021.
"He's the most powerful chairman of the joint chiefs in history. It was Milley all along, and I didn't realize it. Milley was manipulating this entire stuff from point start."
The former Guardsman, now serving in the Army Reserve, said that as the joint chiefs chairman, Milley had no legal role in the chain of command; he was simply the president's senior military advisor. However, Milley leveraged his staff in the Pentagon and exploited his relationships with other generals he mentored and favored for promotion so that he ran the Army as his own feudal possession.
