Best of the Web: Washington clashes with Texas over US-Mexico border

The state has blamed the federal government for allowing illegal migrants enter the country.

The administration of US president Joe Biden appealed to the country's Supreme Court on Friday, after Texas blocked federal Border Patrol officers from accessing Shelby Park, a city property along the Rio Grande river on the frontier with Mexico. Texas officials have accused the federal government of failing to stop "mass illegal crossings."

The US Border Patrol had previously cut through razor wire erected by the state to block migrants, which a federal appeals court banned in a December ruling.

The Department of Homeland Security amended its emergency application to the Supreme Court on Friday with photos and maps of the area, claiming that Texas has "effectively prevented Border Patrol from monitoring the border" and that this prevented federal agents from determining whether any migrants might require emergency aid while trying to cross - the only exemption from the ban allowed by the court.

Best of the Web: The pro-Israel Right's "Israel exception" - From free speech to "America first" - is finally dragged into the light

Tucker Carlson's new scathing denunciation of Ben Shapiro and allies on Israel reveals long-hidden rifts.

The Trump-era American Right has carried within it largely hidden but quite massive internal conflicts that have finally exploded into public view. It was long past time for these unsustainable - and glaringly self-negating - doctrinal inconsistencies to be fully aired and confronted.

Exactly that is finally happening in the wake of the Biden administration's steadfast, unlimited financing and arming of Israel's war in Gaza, including Biden's request for an additional $14 billion for Israel's war, on top of the billions Israel automatically gets each year from the U.S. While Biden officials periodically leak statements of "concern" about the number of civilians Israel is killing in Gaza, largely to assuage their increasingly angry voting base, they have steadfastly refused to even consider the use of American leverage and aid to put any limits on Israeli actions.

Biden, as top Israeli officials acknowledge, has spent his entire career as one of Israel's most devoted and steadfast supporters. His reverent speeches defending Israel over the decades make Bill Kristol sound restrained by comparison. Over many decades, Biden is the largest recipient of donations from the pro-Israel lobby, and for good reason. Few have been as steadfastly supportive of that foreign country. And ever since the October 7 attack on Israel, Biden has gone to extreme lengths to protect and support Israel, even bypassing the requirement of Congressional approval to secretly send Israel all the weapons it requests and is now using to obliterate civilian life in Gaza.

Best of the Web: How Israeli forces trapped and killed ravers at the Nova Festival

victims
New evidence points to Israeli security forces, not Hamas, for causing the most fatalities at the music festival - civilian deaths that were then utilized to justify Tel Aviv's Gaza genocide.

Israeli officials allege that Hamas carried out a pre-mediated and carefully executed massacre of 364 Israeli civilians at the Nova music festival near Gaza on 7 October as part of the Palestinian resistance's Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. They claim that Hamas and other Palestinians had hours to murder Israeli partygoers before the army reached the scene.

However, new details have emerged showing that Israel's Border Police was deployed at the Nova site before Hamas stumbled on the festival, causing the eruption of a major battle.

While some ravers were indeed killed by the Palestinian resistance - whether by intent or in the chaos of battle - the evidence now suggests that the majority of civilian deaths were likely inflicted by Israeli forces themselves.

This was due to the overwhelming firepower employed by occupation forces - including from Apache attack helicopters - and because Tel Aviv issued the controversial Hannibal Directive to prevent Hamas from taking Israeli party-goers as captives.

Biden administration asks Supreme Court to tell Texas to stop blocking US border agents from patrols

The Justice Department on Friday asked the Supreme Court to order Texas to stop blocking Border Patrol agents from a portion of the U.S.-Mexico border where large numbers of migrants have crossed in recent months, setting up another showdown between Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration over immigration enforcement.

The request comes after Texas put up fencing to take control of a nearly 50-acre (20-hectare) public park along the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, which was a crossing point for thousands of migrants entering from Mexico last year. Although a similar power struggle played out in the same region more than a year ago, the area Texas closed off this week prevents federal agents from accessing a larger and more visible crossing spot.

Along one stretch, armed Texas National Guard members and their vehicles are preventing Border Patrol agents from accessing the river, the Justice Department said in court filing. The Texas National Guard also allegedly used a military Humvee to keep Border Patrol agents off an access road.

The Justice Department wrote in a filing:
"Because Border Patrol can no longer access or view this stretch of the border, Texas has effectively prevented Border Patrol from monitoring the border."
Abbott told reporters that Texas has the authority to control access to any geographic location in the state.

"That authority is being asserted," Abbott said.

The United States Border Patrol (USBP) is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and is responsible for securing the borders of the United States. According to its web site in 2022, its mission is to "Protect the American people, safeguard our borders, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity."

With 19,648 agents in 2019, the Border Patrol is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the United States. There have been complaints, over many years, of Border Patrol agents mistreating migrants and exceeding their legal authority.
The Texas Army National Guard is a component of the United States Army, the United States National Guard and the Texas Military Forces (along with the Texas Air National Guard and the Texas State Guard). Texas Army National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army.

The Texas Army National Guard is composed of approximately 19,000 soldiers, and maintains 117 armories in 102 communities. State duties include disaster relief, emergency preparedness, security assistance to state law enforcement agencies, and some aspects of border security. The Governor can activate the National Guard components under his control for state active duty in Texas, and in support of adjacent states.

US strikes another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen after warning ships to avoid parts of Red Sea

The first day of strikes on Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets...

The U.S. military early Saturday struck another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen that they have determined was putting commercial vessels in the Red Sea at risk.

That's according to two U.S. officials who spoke anonymously to The Associated Press to discuss an operation that hadn't yet been publicly announced.

The first day of strikes on Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets. However, the U.S. determined the additional location, a radar site, still presented a threat to maritime traffic, one official said.

President Joe Biden had warned Friday that the Houthis could face further strikes.

The latest strike came after the U.S. Navy on Friday warned American-flagged vessels to steer clear of areas around Yemen in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden for the next 72 hours after the U.S. and Britain launched multiple airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels.

The warning came as Yemen's Houthis vowed fierce retaliation for the U.S.-led strikes, further raising the prospect of a wider conflict in a region already beset by Israel's war in Gaza.

U.S. military and White House officials said they expected the Houthis to try to strike back.

'It doesn't happen': Veterans detail what would happen to regular troops if they pulled a Lloyd Austin

After Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized and failed to inform the White House for several days, veterans reflected on consequences regular soldiers would face if they did something similar.

Austin was rushed Jan. 1 to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., due to extreme pain. Despite spending several days in the ICU, Austin and the Pentagon did not notify the White House or Congress of the secretary's condition until several days after being admitted. Despite the communication breakdown, President Joe Biden has no plans to punish Austin.

If a soldier in the military attempted to do something like Austin — going off to a medical appointment or missing normal duties without informing anyone — they would be punished, veterans told the Daily Caller.

Tim W. a former Navy Seal of 22 years whose surname is being kept anonymous so he could speak candidly, told the Daily Caller:
"As for a regular soldier, sailor, airman, marine just disappearingthat's called Unauthorized Absence — depending on the effects of your UA, you could get any range of punishments, ranging from restriction, demotion, pay taken, loss of security clearances, brig, or even an 'other than honorable' discharge."

Comment: Biden doesn't care. He has no rules except one: Serve Self - a trademark of this administration. Austin? So far, no excuse.

Confidential documents reveal Biden's border crisis was an intentional policy

biden border illegal immigration migrants

As President Joe Biden's immigration crisis overwhelms the United States and wreaks havoc on the state's resources, confidential documents suggest the president's open border policies were intentional.

The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) filed a lawsuit against Biden's Department of Homeland Security (DHS), claiming the agency halted the 287(g) program, which assists in the deportation of illegal migrant child rapists, attempted murderers, assailants, carjackers, and other known criminals.

In August 2023, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that the government ended the program in January 2021 — right after Biden entered office. However, the compromised agency gave no reason why the government did that.

The 287(g) program allows local law enforcement agencies to work closely with ICE to capture illegal aliens who have committed crimes.

They were then able to turn the migrants over to federal officials for arrest and deportation.

Comment: PJ Media adds:
As soon as it became clear that Joe Biden was going to be inaugurated as president, illegal immigrants started flooding our nation's southern border.

During Donald Trump's time in office, the number of illegal border crossings dropped dramatically — an undeniable result of Trump's zero-tolerance policy for illegal immigrants. The border wall also worked well in stopping people from crossing illegally.

But when Biden became president, things changed. On his first day in office, he signed an executive order halting border wall construction. As anyone could have predicted, illegal immigration skyrocketed after Biden took office. Within months of Biden taking office, the number of illegal border crossings shot up to six times more than what the Obama administration deemed to be crisis level, and it's only gotten worse.

The White House has repeatedly sought to blame Republicans for the crisis that they don't official recognize as a crisis, but confidential documents obtained by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) have pulled the curtain back on the border crisis, revealing that the historic influx of illegal immigrants is entirely by design.

Axios: Netanyahu 'giving Biden the finger'

The White House is pushing the Israeli leader to commit to a plan for post-war Gaza, seemingly to no avail

US President Joe Biden is growing frustrated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's constant snubbing of Washington's requests, Axios reported on Sunday. "Netanyahu has given Biden the finger" repeatedly, one Democratic lawmaker told the news site.

The two have not spoken since December 23, when Biden unsuccessfully attempted to pressure the Israeli PM into releasing tax revenue withheld from the Palestinian Authority (PA). These funds are vital to the functioning of the West Bank's government and, even though Netanyahu's own defense ministry has reportedly warned that failure to transfer them to the PA will lead to violence and unrest, Netanyahu has sided with hardliners within his cabinet who oppose the transfer.

"The situation sucks and we are stuck. The president's patience is running out," an anonymous US official told Axios. "At every juncture, Netanyahu has given Biden the finger," Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen added, declaring that the Biden administration is "pleading with the Netanyahu coalition, but getting slapped in the face over and over again."
