Netanyahu caught on tape offering favors to opposition newspaper in exchange for more positive coverage

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu is accused of offering "huge financial benefits" to the publisher of a critical Israeli newspaper in exchange for more favorable coverage.

The prime minister was questioned twice over the past week in two ongoing corruption investigations, Case 1000 and Case 2000. Case 2000 centers on the possible quid pro quo arrangement with the newspaper, which investigators found recorded on Netanyahu's former chief of staff's phone.

Israel's Channel 2 reported January 8 that police had found a recording of Netanyahu offering to limit the circulation of a newspaper — specifically, to shut down its weekend edition — if Arnon Mozes, publisher of rival newspaper Yediot Aharonot, could organize more sympathetic coverage for him.

Haaretz reports that Netanyahu can be heard on the recording offering "huge financial benefits" if Yediot Aharonot helped him stay in power.

Comment: So the leader of the "only democracy in the Middle East" and "America's best friend" is caught proposing a backroom deal to suppress freedom of the press in exchange for bumping his popularity with its readers. Sounds like Netanyahu has been paying close attention to the Democratic Party and its dealings with the US mainstream media.

Trump being attacked by Establishment because he wants to cooperate with Russia

Ashton Carter

Washington is undertaking a demonizing campaign against Russia right now, but in reality, it is less about Russia than it is about Donald Trump, says Joshua Landis from the Center for Middle East Studies.

Interviewed by NBC on Sunday, US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter talked about a number of global issues, among them Russia's alleged hacking of the Democratic Party and the fight against terrorism.

Carter attempted to suggest, against evidence to the contrary, that Russia has not been contributing to the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

RT: Ash Carter clearly accused Russia of not pulling its weight in the fight against terrorism. What's your take on this?

Joshua Landis: Of course he is spinning. The context of this is a big debate going on in America. Both Republicans and the Democrats are trying to hurt Trump by using this intelligence investigation into whether Russia has influenced the elections or not. This is another way to, in a sense, hurt Trump by undermining the notion that the Russians are not doing anything in Syria. Trump has said that he would work with the Russians. But the Russians have in fact bombed ISIS hundreds of times - in Palmyra, in al-Bab, Deir ez-Zor, and in Raqqa. The Russians have taken out long trails of tanker trucks, and so forth. This is a little bit of spinning.

Putin orders Central Bank of Russia to cut lending rates

Putin
President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Central Bank of Russia to look at cutting the lending rate for the country's regions.

"To recommend the Central Bank of Russia reassess the interest rates on loans provided to the subjects of the Russian Federation by lenders, and to take measures to cut them," said a statement on the Kremlin's website.

Putin has given bankers two months until March 1 to cut the key rates. Russian Central Bank head Elvira Nabiullina, who was named as the best European central bank governor in 2016, has been given the task of seeing it through. At the moment, Russia's key annual rate is 10 percent, much lower than the 17 percent during the peak of the economic crisis, but much higher than in Western countries.

The Central Bank intends to cut inflation to four percent this year, and if "a sustainable decline in consumer price growth takes root, the Bank of Russia will consider cutting the key rate in the first half of 2017," the lender said in December. Also, the president instructed the Government to develop "a new mechanism for providing financial assistance to regional budgets on a gratuitous basis." This measure is intended to finance the debt of regions without boosting their public debt. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was assigned the responsibility of putting the president's order into practice.

Assad says Syrian truce does not apply to militants in Wadi Barada near Damascus

In December, media reported that militants had seized control of major Damascus water sources in Wadi Barada. Earlier in January, UN humanitarian coordinator Jan Egeland said that some 5.5 million people in Damascus had little to no access to water after supply from the Wadi Barada spring was disrupted, saying that this constituted a war crime.

"Second part of that ceasefire is not about al-Nusra and ISIS [Daesh], and the area that we've been fighting to liberate recently, regarding the water sources of the capital Damascus, is occupied by al-Nusra, and al-Nusra announced formally that they are occupying that area. So, it's not part of the ceasefire," Assad told French journalists, as quoted by the RTL broadcaster.

The president added that there have been daily breaches of the ceasefire, but these are mainly because the terrorists are occupying the main water supply to Damascus.

Filipino Cabinet to investigate leaks connecting Vice President to pro-Western businesswoman planning anti-Duterte rallies

The Cabinet of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will investigate an alleged email leak that reportedly reveals that the country's vice president has been involved in efforts to overthrow the controversial leader.

The emails, which have been dubbed 'LeniLeaks' online, purportedly show supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo calling for rallies against Duterte's administration.

Those involved in the exchanges, which were posted online by bloggers, were Filipino-American members of a Yahoo! group called Global Filipino Diaspora Council, which is allegedly plotting to oust Duterte.

Billionaire philanthropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis and her sister, former Commission on Filipinos Overseas Chair Imelda "Mely" Nicolas, were both reportedly involved in the exchanges.

Comment: Keep in mind that Loida Nicolas-Lewis is an American businesswoman who lives in New York City who was the leading campaigner behind Mar Roxas, the pro-Western foe Duterte beat out in the presidential election. It is not a stretch to think that she is part of the US government's attempts to disrupt the Duterte government and create dissent where none actually exists. In fact, Duterte was aware months ago that Nicolas-Lewis was behind attempts to launch protests against him, which he characteristically dismissed. The "Global Filipino Diaspora Council' sounds like exactly the kind of organization a US intelligence agency would create in order to destabilize the Philippines.

Containing Germany? Ex-Volkwagen official arrested by FBI on fraud charges

In a new twist in Volkswagen's diesel emissions cheating scandal, a high-profile ex-official for the automaker has been reportedly arrested by the FBI on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States.

On Saturday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation detained Oliver Schmidt, who headed Volkswagen's regulatory compliance office in the United States from 2014 to March 2015, the New York Times reported, citing sources with knowledge of the arrest.

Schmidt is to appear in court in Detroit on Monday, the sources said, according to the news outlet, which noted, however, that Schmidt's lawyers and Justice Department officials have refused to comment on the matter.

Schmidt and other Volkswagen executives have been accused of playing a role in the automaker's "widespread conspiracy" to cover its emissions cheating from United States regulators - a scandal that's been dubbed "Dieselgate."

According to lawsuits filed against Volkswagen Group by New York's, Massachusetts' and Maryland's state attorneys, Schmidt gave false technical explanations for the high emissions levels of the automaker's diesel vehicles on a number of occasions starting in late 2014.

Comment: There's likely more to this story than meets the eye, as this "scandal" has geopolitical implications beyond corporate fraud. As Niall Bradley wrote earlier this year in the SOTT Focus Die amerikanische imperium: German car emissions 'scandal' is a petulant act of industrial sabotage:
The bottom line is that the 'Masters of the Universe' in Washington and Wall Street can't have Germany cosying up to Russia, and the best way to ensure that is to keep Europe's leading economy weighed down in costly, protracted legal affairs.

Trump calls Meryl Streep an 'over-rated, Hillary flunky' after Golden Globes speech

Trump Meryl Streep

Donald Trump has lashed out at Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep in a series of tweets, labeling the Hollywood actor "over-rated" and a "Hillary flunky."

Streep strongly criticized the president-elect during an acceptance speech at the Golden Globes award ceremony on Sunday, slamming Trump's apparent impression of a disabled reporter during his election campaign.

Comment: Streep's claim of moral outrage falls flat in the face of her silence over actual atrocities. As hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives and homes in the illegal wars and invasions of Libya, Syria, etc. at the hands of Obama, Hillary, et al, she has said nothing. If Trump wanted to respond to Streep's snowflake speech, he should have pointed out this hypocrisy.

How the hubris of George Soros destroyed the Democratic Party

George Soros
George Soros
It was the end of the big year with three zeroes. The first X-Men movie had broken box office records. You couldn't set foot in a supermarket without listening to Brittney Spears caterwauling, "Oops, I Did It Again." And Republicans and Democrats had total control of both chambers of legislatures in the same amount of states. That was the way it was back in the distant days of the year 2000.

In 2016, Republicans control both legislative chambers in 32 states. That's up from 16 in 2000.

What happened to the big donkey? Among other things, the Democrats decided to sell their base and their soul to a very bad billionaire and they got a very bad deal for both.

It was 2004. The poncho was the hottest fashion trend, there were 5 million new cases of AIDS and a former Nazi collaborator had bought the Democrat Party using the spare change in his sofa cushions.

And gone to war against the will of the people. This was what he modestly called his own "Soros Doctrine".

"It is the central focus of my life," George Soros declared. It was "a matter of life and death." He vowed that he would become poor if it meant defeating the President of the United States.

Instead of going to the poorhouse, he threw in at least $15 million, all the spare change in the billionaire's sofa cushions, dedicated to beating President Bush.

In his best lisping James Bond villain accent, Soros strode into the National Press Club and declared that he had "an important message to deliver to the American Public before the election" that was contained in a pamphlet and a book that he waved in front of the camera. Despite his "I expect you to die, Mr. Bond" voice, the international villain's delivery was underwhelming. He couldn't have sold brownies to potheads at four in the morning. He couldn't even sell Bush-bashing to a roomful of left-wing reporters.

But he could certainly fund those who would. And that's exactly what he did.

Comment: The damage and misery George Soros has managed to inflict on not just the U.S., but the world, is almost incalculable. And all of it has been in pursuit of his own wealth and personal power. This is only a short list of his evil machinations:

What really matters in ODNI report on "Russia's election interfering"

Rt ODNI report hacking
Laughably, RT (along with Sputnik) was singled out in the ODNI report simply for being a successful news outlet with good talk shows.
(written in haste during my last day of "holidays" so forgive the poor style - the Saker)

I have to confess that my first reaction was to simply ignore this report as an irrelevant load of nonsense. Then I listened to a Ukrainian blogger, Anatoli Sharii, making fun of this report for over 10 minutes. Listening to him my first reaction was "can't be - Sharii is in overkill mode". But then Sharii began quoting the report at length and I simply could not believe my eyes (I reading the original English text which Sharii had translated into Russian): every word Sharii said was true. That's when I decided to download this document and read it. Here it is embedded for you to read. Please do read the full text. It is absolutely amazing:

Before we go into the details, I also recommend that you go through the following two examples of how the US corporate media "helpfully" provided their readers with a "guide" to better understand/interpret this report:
CNN: 10 most damning findings from report on Russian election interference

VOX: The key findings from the US intelligence report on the Russia hack, decoded
Again, even if it is painful, I recommend that you read the full text of the "guides" provided by these media outlets.

Now let's turn to the contents.

Pentagon 'liar in chief' claims US fighting ISIS alone, Russia doing 'virtually zero' in Syria

Russia has done "virtually zero" in the fight against Islamic State terrorists in Syria the US Secretary of Defense has claimed, contending that the US and its coalition partners are carrying this burden "by themselves."

"They haven't done anything," Ash Carter stated in an interview with NBC's Meet the Press. "They came in, they said they were going to fight ISIL, and they said they were going to help in the civil war in Syria."

"They haven't done either of those things. As a consequence of course, we're fighting ISIL ourselves," adding that Moscow achieved "virtually zero" in Syria.

Comment: Does Carter actually believe this false narrative of his? It is so blatantly obvious he is lying.

Comment: It will be a pleasure to see Carter go away and never come back. Sick of his propaganda and lies.
