Citing upcoming elections, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has cancelled a joint summit with Israeli officials scheduled for May, but elements within Berlin and Jerusalem are claiming that Israel's recent vote to expand its settlements in the West Bank is the real cause for the cancellation.

German national security adviser Kristof Heusgen informed the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the postponed meeting just days after the Knesset passed the "Regularization Law", according to Haaretz, even though the German elections won't be held until four and a half months after the summit in September.

One Israeli spokesman told Deutsche Welle that the summit was canceled due to a "variety of international appointments within the context of the German presidency of the G20."

President Rivlin believes Israel should annex West Bank and give Palestinians full citizenship

Israel should annex all the occupied land it claims sovereignty over and grant full citizenship to those falling under its extended jurisdiction, President Reuven Rivlin said, apparently implying full annexation of the West Bank.

Speaking in the wider context of the controversial bill that has legalized the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories last week, Rivlin criticized the settlement policies which his country has pursued following the 1967 War.

Instead, the Israeli president reasoned that Israel should extend its full sovereignty over the land of "Zion" and claim lands Tel Aviv occupied in the Six Day War which includes the settlements within the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and within Syrian territory in the Golan Heights.

"I, Rubi Rivlin, believe that Zion is entirely ours. I believe the sovereignty of the State of Israel must be in all the blocs," the president said, emphasizing that he was referring to the entire West Bank, the Times of Israel quoted him as saying.

The US has sanctioned Venezuelan Vice President Tareck El Aissami for alleged drug trafficking, saying that he "facilitated shipments of narcotics" and "oversaw or partially owned narcotics shipments of over 1,000 kilograms" from Venezuela.

El Aissami was appointed to the position of executive vice president of Venezuela last month. He has previously served as the country's interior and justice minister (2008-2012) and the governor of Aragua State (2012-2017).

"He facilitated shipments of narcotics from Venezuela, to include control over planes that leave from a Venezuelan air base, as well as control of drug routes through the ports in Venezuela," said a statement released on Monday by the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

As concerns over Greece and its debt mount, Athens has reportedly decided to call in Rothschild, one of the oldest financial firms in the world, to navigate the country's long-running creditor stand-off and avert default.

According to the Financial Times, Greek authorities hope to finalize the appointment before crunch debt talks with eurozone finance ministers on February 20. The date has been described as the last chance for a bailout review with the upcoming elections in Europe likely to dominate the EU agenda.

Sources told the FT that Rothschild is expected to advise Athens on all areas connected to its debt, including negotiations with creditors, potential inclusion in the European Central Bank's €80 billion per month bond-buying program and the resumption of Greek government bond sales.

They added the bank will be paid a bonus when Greece regains access to global debt markets.

Sources report Russia stopped clashes between Syrian Army & rebels in northern Syria

Russia intervened to halt a clash between Syrian government forces and Turkey-backed Syrian rebels in northern Syria, sources on both sides said on Friday, the first confrontation between them as both sides fight Islamic State in the area.

Islamic State is under attack from separate campaigns in northern Syria by Russian-backed government forces and Turkey-backed rebels. The clash on Thursday near the IS-held city of al-Bab underlined the risk of the parallel offensives igniting new fighting between the government and its rebel enemies.

Russia and Turkey have backed opposing sides in the war but recently started cooperating over Syria, brokering a truce between government forces and rebels and working together to try to revive peace talks.

Comment: As Professor Tim Anderson notes in a recent interview, there is still plenty of resentment in the Syrian Army towards so-called 'rebel' factions:
It is certainly true that many Syrian resent the amnesties given to former Syrian fighters, whom they regard as mercenaries and terrorists. We know that the [Persian] Gulf monarchies and some NATO states have paid them higher salaries than Syrian soldiers, with DAESH fighters on the highest salaries. Many Syrians regard these traitors as no better than their foreign terrorist partners.

Beijing 'gravely concerned' by US support of Japan's territorial claims

China has once again reminded Washington that it will defend its "national sovereignty and territorial integrity" in the South and East China Seas, urging the US to exercise "prudence" in extending its commitment to allies in the region.

Last week, Donald Trump hosted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, where the US leader cemented the American commitment to support Japanese territorial claims in the East China Sea.

Trump and Abe "affirmed that Article V of the US-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security covers the Senkaku Islands. They oppose any unilateral action that seeks to undermine Japan's administration of these islands. The United States and Japan will deepen cooperation to safeguard the peace and stability of the East China Sea," a joint statement read.

Comment: The islands are the site of potential oil reserves and could largely determine the future of China's naval power. As Pepe Escobar writes,
The whole drama is far from being just about a few islets and rocks that China calls Diaoyu and Japan Senkaku, or the crucial access to the precious waters that surround them, harboring untold riches in oil and natural gas; it concerns no less than the future of China as a sea power rivaling the US.

Brazil's manufactured coup: The 'Shock Doctrine' returns to Latin America

Harsh austerity. A 20-year public spending freeze. A non-elected government. A coup backed by the United States and corporate world.

This is the new reality that Brazil has faced following the impeachment and ouster of the democratically-elected Dilma Rousseff in August of 2016 on charges of corruption and her replacement by vice-president Michel Temer, a favorite of Washington.

This is also a new reality that has been met by widespread disapproval, occasional large-scale protests, and a new economic uncertainty for a country which, just a few years ago, was seen as an up-and-coming economic powerhouse, along with the rest of the BRICS, the bloc composed of emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This optimism has been quickly supplanted by an increasingly volatile social situation in Brazil and great pessimism for the future.

Much has been made in the media about the progressive credentials of the Rousseff government and that of her predecessor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, both of whom represented the Workers' Party (PT) of Brazil. Much has also been made of the mass protests which led to Rousseff's outster, which bore similarities to protests seen in countries such as Venezuela against the Maduro regime, and the relative lack of protest that the Temer government has faced since ascending to power.

Organized campaigns aim to derail Trump's foreign policy plans

At the end of his administration Obama implemented a series of anti-Russian moves. The most obvious was the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats over unfounded allegation of Russian interference in the U.S. elections. Other moves included the launching of an Ukrainian offense against the Russian supported resistance in the east Ukraine.

These moves were designed to impede the incoming Trump administration in its announced plans towards more friendly relations with Russia. The incoming Trump administration countered Obama's sanction move. Its designated National Security Advisor Flynn phoned up the Russian ambassador in Washington. He did not promise to immediately lift the sanctions but indirectly asked him to refrain from any harsh response:
The transcripts of the conversations don't show Mr. Flynn made any sort of promise to lift the sanctions once Mr. Trump took office, the officials said. Rather, they show Mr.Flynn making more general comments about relations between the two countries improving under Mr. Trump, people familiar with them said.
This was arguably a sensible move in line with a smooth transition of government.

In the end the Russian government refrained from any in kind reaction to the Obama sanctions.

Idiocracy now: "Putin's invading Lvov and Gabon!" - Russian pranksters troll US Congresswoman Maxine Waters

maxine waters
Two Russian pranksters have called US Congresswoman Maxine Waters posing as the Ukrainian PM seeking reassurances in the wake of Moscow's most recent "invasions" across the globe and impudent "hacking" of presidential elections in a fictitious country.

The two tricksters famous for their high-level prank calls are Vladimir Krasnov and Aleksey Stolyarov, known online as Vovan and Lexus. Their new audio posted online features a talk between the duo, impersonating Ukrainian PM Volodimir Groysman, and a female alleged to be Congresswoman Maxine Waters, known for her strict anti-Russian stance.

Comment: This woman is completely off her nut.

She is an American leader. She represents Americans. She is a member of the American elite. Terrifying, isn't it?
