Trump says China will get better trade deal if it solves North Korean problem

US President Donald Trump said he offered to make Chinese President Xi Jinping a better trade deal if China solves the "North Korean problem." He added that the US would solve it on its own, if necessary.

It comes after Xi's visit to the US last week, in which the two leaders discussed numerous points of contention between the US and China. According to Reuters, after Xi's visit, Beijing ordered the coal trade with North Korea to be curbed, removing one of the few sources of foreign currency at Pyongyang's disposal.

North Korea is a significant supplier of coal to China's steelmakers. Beijing will reportedly compensate for the shortfall by buying more coal from the US.

Just after the Chinese leader's visit, the US unexpectedly deployed the USS Carl Vinson strike group towards the Korean Peninsula - the same week the US escalated its involvement in the Syrian conflict with the firing of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian Air Force base in Homs Province. The two events sparked speculation that Trump may use military force against Pyongyang the same way it did against Damascus.

Russian military: Syrian army repels terror offensive that took advantage of U.S. strike, kills 150 attackers

Militants took advantage of the US missile strike on a Syrian airbase and attacked the government army from the south-western direction. All their attacks were repelled, over 150 terrorists were killed, chief of the Russian General Staff's Main Operational Directorate Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said at a news briefing on Tuesday.

"Having taken advantage of the US cruise missile strike on the Shai'rat airbase, used by Syrian aviation for actions near Hama and Palmyra, terrorists launched counter-attacks against government troops from the south-western direction. All their attacks were repelled, two battle tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles and eight trucks with heavy machine-guns, as well as over 150 terrorists were destroyed," Rudskoi said.

Comment: So aside from the positive Western media response, and the deaths of some dozen or so Syrian troops and civilians, these are the effects of Trump's attack on the Shai'rat base:
  • the base was back in use a day after the attack (the terrorists won't like that)
  • Russia promised to beef up Syria's air defenses (Israel and the U.S. won't like that)
  • Russia backed out of their deconfliction agreement regarding U.S. air operations over Syria (the U.S. coalition won't like that)
  • Syria has slapped back the attacks of the terrorists who thought they could take advantage of a moment of weakness (all of the above parties won't like that)
Draw your own conclusions.

Trump & Putin must join forces to fix Syria crisis, says Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn

Russia and the US must join forces to tackle the crisis in Syria, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has said, as G7 countries meet to discuss the recent alleged chemical attack and US retaliatory missile strike. Speaking at a public event at the Federation of Small Businesses, Corbyn said US President Donald Trump should engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin to find a political solution to the six-year Syria conflict. While singling out Trump, Corbyn also called on G7 countries to "engage rapidly" with Russia.

"I hope that whatever comes out of the G7 today is an agreement they will engage rapidly with Russia, rapidly with all the neighboring countries who clearly are not in the G7, and reconvene, as a matter of urgency, the Geneva process and have a meaningful ceasefire," Corbyn said. "Putin and Trump have got to get together. They are the superpowers of the world. "Vladimir Putin can be forced into all sorts of directions if sufficient political and other pressure is put on him." G7 leaders met in Italy on Tuesday to discuss the recent alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province that killed 89 people, and the US retaliatory missile strike against a Syrian airbase.

Comment: Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano conveniently forgets that either the "moderate" rebels or Turkey & terrorist groups were pretty much the only ones violating Syrian ceasefire.

G7 goes off script: "Russia has potential to defeat ISIS, restore Syria"

G7 foreign ministers agreed that Russia is capable of obliterating terrorism and restoring peace in Syria.

Russia has the potential to help resolve the conflict in Syria, to defeat terrorism including the Daesh terrorist group, the G7 foreign ministers said in a joint communique Tuesday.

"Russia has the potential to help resolve the conflict and restore a stable and unified Syria, and defeat ISIL/Da'esh and terrorism," the communique published after the meeting in Italy's Lucca said.

Comment: The Duran's Alexander Mercouris comments:
Probably the best that can now be hoped for is an investigation that takes weeks or even months to report, allowing passions in the meantime to die down.

That probably is the thinking of the three European members of the G7 - Germany, France and Italy - that are pressing hardest for the investigation. Sigmar Gabriel, Germany's foreign minister, had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on Sunday, when Lavrov appears to have pressed the idea of an investigation on him. On the question of the need for such an investigation the Europeans, somewhat unusually, have sided with the Russians against the Americans, almost certainly because German public opinion is known to oppose the US missile strikes.

Though no one should have any high expectations of what the results of an investigation into the alleged Khan Sheikhoun attack will lead to, Russian statements since the attack do suggest that the Russians are very confident of their facts and the fact that the Europeans are calling for an investigation after the US missile strike is hardly a ringing endorsement of the US claims President Assad is guilty.

Also it is fair to point out that the UN inquiry into the attack on the humanitarian convoy in September 2016, though placed under intense pressure and working under the severest constraints, proved unexpectedly impartial, clearing the Russians entirely and suggesting the Syrians bombed the convoy by mistake. That almost certainly happened because the head of that inquiry - an Indian military officer - was a tough and principled man, who insisted on the inquiry doing its job properly. Whilst the US and its Western allies will doubtless be working overtime to ensure that any inquiry into the Khan Sheikhoun attack is not headed by such a person, since the inquiry will be set up by the UN the Russians will also have a say, and it is not completely inconceivable that it might in the end do its job properly.
The UN says it will only begin a Syria probe with the OPCW after the use of chemicals is confirmed. Presumable that means they will have to visit the crime scene (if the video evidence is not enough to count as confirmation). Good luck with that! As they all know, the area is controlled by al-Qaeda. Maybe they can send John McCain over there to ask his buddies for a favor.

British government refuses to confirm ISIS attacked UK special forces base in Syria

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) forces attacked a known special forces base in Syria, but the British government has refused to confirm its soldiers were there.

UK special forces are known to use the al-Tanf garrison as a base to train 'moderate' Syrian rebels. The US also has troops stationed at the base.

The UK presence became public knowledge after images were leaked to the press in 2016.

Reports by the Telegraph indicate an IS assault force composed of an estimated 30 suicide bombers and fighters attacked the base on Sunday.

It is reported that the jihadists avoided detection by using vehicles captured in an earlier battle to get close to the base.

Coincidence? Chemical weapons attacks follow John McCain's secret trips to Syria

McCain and Terrorists
Senator John McCain in Syria with members of the U.S.-backed rebel group Northern Storm.

John McCain made a "secret" Syria visit on May 27, 2013. The Ghouta, Syria false flag attack took place on 21 August 2013.

Senator John McCain made a secret trip to a Kurdish-held region in northern Syria the week of February 20th, 2017, to speak with US military officials, rebel fighters, and leaders in the region.

McCain spokeswoman, Julie Tarallo, confirmed that McCain made this secret trip, calling it a "valuable opportunity to assess dynamic conditions on the ground in Syria and Iraq."

The Wall Street Journal said the trip was organized with help of the US military, and it was the first time a US lawmaker had traveled to the region since American special operations forces began fighting alongside local forces.

Comment: McCain is a compromised puppet of Empire, used very effectively by the military-security establishment whenever a spark is needed to provoke conflict.

Neocons have Trump on his knees

After slapping Donald Trump around for several months to make him surrender his hopes for a more cooperative relationship with Russia, the neocons and their liberal-interventionist allies are now telling the battered President what he must do next: escalate war in the Middle East and ratchet up tensions with nuclear-armed Russia.

Star neocon Robert Kagan spelled out Trump's future assignments in a column on Sunday in The Washington Post, starting out by patting the chastened President on the head for his decision to launch 59 Tomahawk missiles at an airstrip in Syria supposedly in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack blamed on the Syrian government (although no serious investigation was even conducted).

Trump earned widespread plaudits for his decisive action and his heart-on-the-sleeve humanitarianism as his voice filled with emotion citing the chemical-weapons deaths on April 4 of "small children and even beautiful little babies." The U.S. media then helpfully played down reports from Syria that Trump's April 6 retaliatory missile strike had killed about 15 people, including nine civilians, four of whom were children.

President Donald Trump has signed the US approval for Montenegro to join NATO, following the majority vote in the Senate to ratify the small Balkan state's accession to the trans-Atlantic alliance in March.

NATO is "central to ensuring peace and security on the European continent," the White House said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that Montenegro's membership will signal to other aspirants that the "door to membership in the Euro-Atlantic community of nations remains open."
