Russian energy giant Gazprom has begun laying pipes for the Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline off the Russian Black Sea coast, Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller said Sunday, days after the Sochi meeting between Turkish and Russian leaders.

"Today, we started the practical implementation of the TurkStream gas pipeline project: pipe-laying within the offshore section. The project has been implemented in strict compliance with the plan," Miller said in a statement Sunday, adding that "by late 2019, our Turkish and European consumers will have a new, reliable source of Russian gas imports."

Going into the details of the works that are currently under way off the Krasnodar Krai coastline, Miller said that that the inaugural construction works are being carried out by the Audacia multi-purpose pipe-laying vessel, owned by Allseas, the project's main contractor. It is tasked with construction of both legs of the pipeline's offshore stretch, measuring over 900 km.

The first of the legs, with a maximum capacity of 15.75 billion cubic meters, will deliver Russian natural gas directly to Turkey, while the second is envisioned to supply gas to European customers.

Ankara is planning to build a wall along the border with Iran within the framework of the efforts to prevent the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is listed as a terror group in Turkey, from entering the country's territory, the Hurriyet newspaper reported on Monday, citing an official.

Earlier in May, media reported that Turkey was reinforcing the border with Syria in the southeastern part of the country with country's forces reportedly launching construction of a concrete wall.

"The PKK has the Maku, Dambat, Navur, Kotr, Keneresh and Sehidan camps inside Iran near the Turkish border. There are some 800-1,000 PKK terrorists in those camps. They enter Turkey, carry out attacks and leave... As a precaution against this, we are going to build a wall along 70 kilometers of the border near Agrı and [the eastern province of] Igdır," the official said, as quoted by the newspaper.

The leader of Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan has been killed in a joint raid by US and Afghan Special Forces in the eastern province of Nangarhar, American defense officials have confirmed.

Abdul Hasib, the head of Islamic State's (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) faction in Afghanistan, was killed on April 27, the US military confirmed on Sunday, according to Reuters. The operation to eliminate the high-profile terrorist leader involved some 50 US Army rangers and dozens of Afghan special forces troops.

Last year, Hasib was appointed as the leader of IS' faction in Afghanistan - otherwise known as Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) - after his predecessor Hafiz Saeed Khan died in a US drone strike. Hasib is believed to have orchestrated several deadly terrorist attacks, including a high-profile assault on a military hospital in Kabul on March 8.

"This successful joint operation is another important step in our relentless campaign to defeat ISIS-K in 2017," General John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said in Kabul on Sunday, as quoted by Reuters.

The Israeli government held a debate on Sunday, vowing to kick out UN and affiliated agencies from its longstanding offices in East Jerusalem, as proposed by a minister of culture, after UNESCO passed a strongly-worded resolution, labeling Israel "the occupying power."

While no information on the outcome of the meeting is yet available, there is only a slight chance that such an idea could be actually translated into action with the Israeli Foreign Ministry reportedly warning of repercussions.

"The professional opinion that will be presented is that Israel is signatory to an agreement with the UN and other international conventions under which the UN headquarters is granted diplomatic immunity," a senior Foreign ministry source said ahead of the meeting, as cited by Haaretz.

The North Atlantic Alliance sent relations with Moscow into a deep freeze after its plans aimed at severing ties between Russia and Ukraine failed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Sunday.

"NATO became bitter that its project aimed at bringing the entire Ukraine into its sphere of influence, making Ukraine part of the North Atlantic Alliance and using Crimea to encircle Russia fell through," he explained in an interview with the Mir channel.

As a result, the US-led military alliance suspended cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, including counterterrorism efforts, Russia's top diplomat said. However, the bloc has tried to relaunch dialogue despite "the resistance from an aggressive minority."

The Kremlin has always maintained that Moscow is ready to discuss issues of mutual concern with NATO on equal terms and without preconditions.
