Putin condemns Stalinism while West media reports he promotes it

Wall of Grief 2017
© REUTERS/Alexander Nemenov/PoolRussian President Vladimir Putin with Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, and former Human Rights Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin attend a ceremony unveiling the country's first national memorial to victims of Soviet-era political repressions called "The Wall of Grief" in downtown Moscow, Russia October 30, 2017.
Yesterday (30 October), Vladimir Putin attended the unveiling of the 'Wall of Grief', a monument erected in Moscow to the victims of communist repression. This is the third major such monument constructed in Moscow this year, the other two being the Sretenskii Monastery (about which I wrote earlier) and a memorial at the former Butovo firing range.

You might imagine that these strong signals of disapproval of communism would have some effect on how the media represents Putin and the state he leads. For instance, you might imagine headlines like 'Putin condemns Stalinism', or 'Russian state turns it back on communist past', combined with some analysis of how this connects to other similar official condemnations of the Soviet Union. Well, if so you'd be wrong. For the most part, Western media haven't bothered covering the story at all, but let's look at those which have.

Reuters sets the tone with the headline, 'Putin opens monument to Stalin's victims; dissidents cry foul,' and with an opening paragraph declaiming that, 'President Vladimir Putin inaugurated a monument to the victims of Stalinist purges on Monday, but Soviet-era dissidents accused him of cynicism at a time when they say authorities are riding roughshod over civil freedoms.' At the very end of its article, Reuters takes pains to tell us:
Monuments and memorial plaques honoring Stalin have sprung up in different Russian regions. State-approved textbooks have softened his image, and an opinion poll in June crowned him the country's most outstanding historical figure. By contrast, those who have helped document Stalin's crimes, from the Memorial human rights group to individual historians and journalists, have sometimes felt themselves under pressure from the authorities. A group of Soviet-era dissidents published a letter on Monday, accusing Putin of cynicism. 'We ... consider the opening in Moscow of a monument to victims of political repression untimely and cynical,' they said in the letter, published on the Kasparov.ru news portal. 'It's impossible to take part in memorial events organized by the authorities who say they are sorry about victims of the Soviet regime, but in practice continue political repression and crush civil freedoms.'

Comment: The western media will take every opportunity to demonize Putin and by extension, Russia, to maintain the public's perception that they are evil. For more:

While the Syrian Army has fully recaptured Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in eastern Syria, from Daesh, the Iraqi military has started its final assault on the terrorists' last bastion in Iraq.

The operation involves 40,000 Iraqi soldiers, Sunni tribal forces and Iranian-backed Popular Mobilisation force. They overcame the terrorists' first line of defense on the Husseiba - Karabil line and entered the city, taking the nearby heights.

BREAKING: Deir ez-Zor 100% liberated after final battles between Syrian Arab Army and ISIS terrorists

Syrian Major General Issam Zahreddine
The Syrian Arab Army has fully liberated Deir ez-Zor city after over three years of ISIS occupation. Much of the city had been liberated following Syria's breaking of the siege of Deir ez-Zor and entering the city on 5 September of this year.

After the subsequent, nearly two months of fighting against the remnants of ISIS and their intentional backers, the last remaining fighters have been crushed.

Deir ez-Zor was the last stronghold of ISIS in Syria and while other pockets of the terrorist group remain, the full liberation of Deir ez-Zor, along with nearby al-Mayadeen, the effective world 'capital' of ISIS, means that the group is essentially destroyed as a battle capable organisation with territory under its illegal occupation.

Spanish judge jails eight members of deposed Catalan government, seeks prison term for Prime Minster Puigdemont

catalan ministers jailed
Former members of the Catalan government arrive at Spain’s national court in Madrid on Thursday

A judge in Madrid has ordered eight members of the deposed Catalan government to be remanded in custody pending possible charges over last week's declaration of independence, and Spanish prosecutors are seeking a European arrest warrant for the region's ousted president, Carles Puigdemont.

Comment: Now it becomes clear, if it wasn't all along, that the Madrid authorities have no intention of respecting the will of the people in Cataluña, because they clearly have no intention of finding out what their will actually is. The elections scheduled for Dec. 21st cannot possibly be representative of all Catalans when the major political figures of the independence party are in jail or have warrants out for their arrest. So is Madrid expecting that sham elections in December will be accepted by the people? Do they plan to ignore the flagrant undemocratic nature of such a move and hope that the people, in time, will simply accept it? That's a risky bet.

Flashback Mueller worked with radical Islamist groups to remove material offensive to Muslims from anti-terrorism training manuals

Now that Robert Mueller has been appointed special counsel to investigate if Russia influenced the 2016 presidential election it's worth reiterating his misguided handiwork and collaboration with radical Islamist organizations as FBI director. Judicial Watch exclusively obtained droves of records back in 2013 documenting how, under Mueller's leadership, the FBI purged all anti-terrorism training material deemed "offensive" to Muslims after secret meetings between Islamic organizations and the FBI chief. Judicial Watch had to sue to get the records and published an in-depth report on the scandal in 2013 and a lengthier, updated follow-up in 2015.

As FBI director, Mueller bent over backwards to please radical Islamist groups and caved into their demands. The agency eliminated the valuable anti-terrorism training material and curricula after Mueller met with various Islamist organizations, including those with documented ties to terrorism. Among them were two organizations - Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) - named by the U.S. government as unindicted co-conspirators in the 2007 Holy Land Foundation terrorist financing case. CAIR is a terrorist front group with extensive links to foreign and domestic Islamists. It was founded in 1994 by three Middle Eastern extremists (Omar Ahmad, Nihad Awad and Rafeeq Jaber) who ran the American propaganda wing of Hamas, known then as the Islamic Association for Palestine.

Exiled Catalan leader Puigdemont says he'll not return to Spain to testify

Dismissed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont said on Wednesday he would ignore a court order to return to Spain to answer charges over the region's push for independence, but he could testify from Belgium.

If Puigdemont fails to answer Thursday's High Court summons, an arrest warrant could be issued that would make it virtually impossible for him to stand in a snap regional election called by the Spanish government for Dec. 21.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy sacked Puigdemont and his government on Friday, hours after the Catalan parliament made a unilateral declaration of independence in a vote boycotted by the opposition and declared illegal by Spanish courts.

Eva Bartlett outlines the most egregious purveyors of absurd Syrian war propaganda in the West

As if we have no memory, corporate media continues to recycle accusations of starvation, chemical weapons, and more, in the propaganda war on Syria.

In Syria, there never was a "revolution." Instead, it was a premeditated war on Syria by foreign powers (namely the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Israel) who armed even Al-Qaeda (something Qatar recently admitted).

In support of the conflict comes some of the most egregious war propaganda, endorsed by media, Hollywood celebs, and faux human rights groups. The following is a brief outline of some of the most obvious hoax personalities and purveyors of misinformation on Syria.

Russia says its Bear aircraft were carrying out 'scheduled flights over neutral waters'

US Navy fighter jets took off to shadow a pair of Russian bombers after they reportedly approached the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan.

Two F/A-18 Hornets scrambled from the 100,000-tonne carrier to escort the Russian TU-95s on Sunday, according to US officials.

The meeting was categorised as safe and professional, the defence officials told CNN.

Russia's defence ministry was cited by Sputnik, a state-controlled website, as saying: "Two Russian Tu-95MS Bear bombers carried out scheduled flights over neutral waters of the Sea of Japan and the western part of the Pacific Ocean."

'US govt undermining democracy' by seeking more control over social media

House (Select) Intelligence Committee

It's preposterous that the US government purports to tell Americans what they are allowed to read on social media, says Daniel McAdams, executive director of Ron Paul Institute. He adds that it undermines US democracy.

Technology and social media giants Facebook, Twitter, and Google have been in the hot seat before US Congress intelligence committees. They were grilled on day two of hearings into alleged Russian interference in the presidential election in 2016. Lawyers for Twitter, Google, and Facebook testified that the amount of Russian-linked content on their platforms was relatively small. But was that what the Senators wanted to hear?

RT asked Daniel McAdams, executive director of Ron Paul Institute whether Senators are pushing the firms to get in line with US foreign policy.

"It's preposterous that the US government purports to tell the American people what they are allowed to read, what they are allowed to consume on social media," he said, McAdams cited Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) who said during the grilling "How do we know that isn't going to undermine our democracy?"

McAdams argues: "Our democracy is based on us having the widest range of information possible with zero government involvement. They are the ones that are acting like totalitarians; they are the ones acting like anti-American; they are the ones that are undermining our democracy."
