Israel complains about Polish law that censors role of Poles in Holocaust

Polish President Andrzej Duda Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
© FacebookPolish President Andrzej Duda, left, pictured with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a January 2017 visit to Jerusalem, is “flabbergasted” at Israel’s reaction to a new law restricting speech about the role Poles played in the Holocaust.
A crisis is brewing between Warsaw and Tel Aviv over a new Polish law criminalizing mention of the role some Poles played in the German genocide of Jews during World War II.

The law passed in the lower house and is expected to pass in the senate and be signed by the president before it takes effect.

From Israel's perspective, the problem is how to appear sufficiently upset in order to maintain the self-declared Jewish state's self-appointed role as the guardian of the memory of the millions murdered.

It's an awkward balancing act since in the 21st century, anti-Semites and even some Holocaust deniers are among Israel's closest and most fervent allies.

Comment: The author has a point: Israeli Zionists are natural allies of racists, bigots and the far-right - even the anti-semitic ones! The names and specific narratives may change, but they all define their identity by contrast to the inferior/evil 'other'.

The US State Department has hailed its "real success" in deterring Russian defense exports, claiming Moscow will come up "several billion dollars" short. Officials, however, could not specify which deals were 'derailed.'

The State Department on Tuesday praised its own efforts to punish Russia for its "malign activity" by warning countries "around the world" of the potential repercussions resulting from dealings with Moscow.

"We have spent a considerable amount of time and energy on engaging with partners, with allies, with private industry explaining what Section 231 [of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act] (CAATSA) meant. And demarching countries where we thought there could be potential sanctionable activity, and pushing them to stop potential deals," a senior Department official, whose name has not been disclosed, told a media briefing.

On Netanyahu's visit to Russia Putin gifts him an original letter from Oscar Schindler

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a gift from Russian President Vladimir Putin
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received a gift from Russian President Vladimir Putin - an original letter from German industrialist Oscar Schindler, famous for his salvation of Jews during the Second World War.

Netanyahu, who came with a one-day visit to Moscow, is reported to be touched by the gift and is going to transfer it to the Jerusalem memorial complex "Yad Vashem" - the world's largest center for studying the history of the Holocaust and preserving the memory of the victims.

Luis Gutierrez, the illegal alien-loving congressman from Illinois, appeared to be triggered during President Trump's soaring rhetoric during the State of the Union address and fled the House chamber.

Trump praised the Capitol building, calling it a monument to the American people.

As applause broke out, so did chants of "USA! USA! USA!"

Gutierrez left his seat as several Democrats patted him on the arm as he retreated to a safe space.

Oops! Russian companies blacklisted by US Treasury could provide huge financial boost to Russia

Russian billionaires could soon be forced to bring their capital home. While the US Treasury's 'Kremlin List' does not imply sanctions yet, it may be a signal that wealthy Russians could lose their money abroad.

"The return of capital to the country began a few years ago when Russian citizens began to lose assets abroad, and foreign governments did not always follow the law. This has already led to the consolidation of rich people around the country's leadership," Gleb Zadoya, head of analytics at Analitika Online, told RT.

Sanctions and pressure in the West do not necessarily mean that capital will return to Russia, as there are other markets like India and China, and this is why the Russian government offers its tycoons capital amnesty, low taxes, and other benefits. And if the sanctions continue for at least one year more, "Russia will have the opportunity to use 'external' investments," if the necessary infrastructure is created by both business and government, Zadoya said.

Comment: Another blunder by the West in its misguided attempt to wage economic war on Russia.

"Oh Yeah, 100 Percent": After SOTU, Trump tells Republicans he'll release The Memo

Trump SOTU
After what even the mainstream-est of mainstream media admitted under duress was a solid SOTU address...
Nearly half of those who watched President Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday reacted "very" positively to the speech, according to a snap CNN/SSRS poll.

According to that survey, the results of which were announced on-air on CNN, 48 percent of respondents said they had a "very positive" reaction to the speech - Trump's first since taking office. Only 22 percent said they had a "somewhat positive" reaction to the speech, while 29 percent reacted negatively.

Sixty-two percent of respondents said that the policies outlined by the president on Tuesday would move the country in the right direction, according to the CNN/SSRS poll. By comparison, 35 percent said they would move it in the wrong direction.

Comment: Well, the comment was said in passing, so it's hard to say whether Trump will stick to it. But we certainly hope so - this popcorn's gettin' cold!

Putin apologizes to Russian Olympic athletes over politicized doping bans

President Vladimir Putin has apologized to Russian Olympic athletes for not protecting them amid the ongoing doping scandal, adding that Russia has always supported and will continue to support sport free from doping and politics.

Competing in professional sports is hard enough in itself, Putin told Russian athletes heading to the 2018 Winter Olympics, adding "it's twice as difficult when sport is intermixed with some events, phenomena alien to it, outside circumstances, politics, or something else."

The president said that the scandals surrounding Russian sport had sparked heated debates within the country, and that this "creates an extremely difficult environment for achieving results."

"Forgive us for not being able to protect you from that," Putin said at the meeting with athletes just outside Moscow on Tuesday.

Comment: It's very commendable that Putin would apologize. It's not his fault that the West is engaging in cultural warfare with Russia. Due to the geopolitical situation, the Russian athletes are merely collateral damage in that war. The West cares nothing about how much time and energy was wasted by CLEAN Russian athletes preparing for the Olympics only to be arbitrarily banned by a bunch of pro-Western shills in WADA and the IOC. It's not your fault, Putin.

MSM bashes Trump's SOTU for 'too much traditional values, too little Russia-bashing'

Donald Trump

As some mainstream media rushed to genuinely fact-check US President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address, others jumped straight to the fault-finding.

In an article hot on the heels of the address, Huffington Post's Akbar Shahid Ahmed accused Trump of letting Russia off too easy. The president only mentioned Russia once in his speech (as he did with China), merely referring to it as a rival, not a sworn enemy hell-bent on America's downfall.

Comparing Trump's wording to his predecessor's, it is easy to see what upset the Huffington Post writer so much. As Barack Obama's presidency wore on, he started placing Russia ahead of even Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) on the list of challenges facing the US. Against that backdrop, Trump's humble "rivals... that challenge our interests, our economy, and our values," may indeed seem mild.

Comment: The New York Times has published a condensed version of Trump's 2018 State of the Union speech. While the overall theme of the President's speech was towards unity, Democrats spent the speech 'refraining from applause, scowling at his boasts, and at one point hissing'.

Top three reasons behind China's economic & military support for Afghanistan

Afghanistan soldiers
Speaking to Sputnik, General Mohammad Radmanesh, an Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman, has echoed China's high-ranking military officials who denied reports about the creation of a Chinese military base in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanesh told Sputnik that efforts are under way to form a brigade and logistics for the Afghan military rather than a base for Chinese servicemen in the north-eastern province of Badakhshan.

"Earlier, the Afghan Defense Minister visited China to discuss the creation of a brigade in Badakhshan. China expressed its readiness to cooperate [with Afghanistan] on technical equipment and maintenance of the base, as well as on other issues. There is no question of creating a Chinese military base in Badakhshan," Radmanesh said.

Comment: Further reading: Is Trump's Afghan policy aimed at Taliban or at China?
In fact what Washington is doing in both Afghanistan and Pakistan has little if anything to do with restoring a functioning government in Kabul or stabilizing Pakistan, once a close US ally during the 1980's US-backed Al Qaeda war against the Soviet forces in Afghanistan, the CIA Operation Cyclone, using Mujahideen mercenaries it trained and armed in a costly ten year war.

The true aim is geopolitical and is directly aimed at the growing influence of China, in cooperation in part with Russia, in stabilizing Afghanistan and drawing the country, along with Pakistan, into the game-changing Belt, Road Initiative, China's multi-nation multi-trillion dollar rail and deep water port infrastructure network.

The Pentagon has no choice but to hide the reality on the ground in Afghanistan, if Americans are exposed to the real situation, there will pressure for the US to withdraw, Middle East analyst Ali Rizk said.

The Pentagon has apparently instructed the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), a watchdog which oversees the situation in the country, to keep quiet over the information on the mass of territory controlled or influenced by the Taliban and Afghan government, according to the watchdog's latest report.
