US State Dept says Syria behind supposed 'chemical weapons' attack - offers no proof

And we're just supposed to take Heather Nauert's word for it? Yeah, right! Mandel Ngan / AFP
The US State Department has claimed to have proof that the Syrian government was the perpetrator of an alleged chemical attack in Douma. It refused to make the evidence public, as the intelligence is "classified."

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said on Friday that the US has "a very high level of confidence" that it was the Syrian government that launched an alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma on April 7. Asked by AP's Matt Lee if the US can say that it has clear evidence of the Syrian government's culpability, Nauert responded that while she cannot speak for other nations, "it's the assessment of the British government, the US government, the French government" that Syria was the culprit.

Reported death of Libya's CIA asset, Khalifa Haftar, sends shockwaves through the Arab world

Unconfirmed reports that General Khalifa Haftar, a key figure in Libya's political landscape, has died in Paris hospital are fueling speculation about the country's future. Haftar had suffered a stroke earlier this week.

Haftar, 74, was reportedly admitted to hospital in France in serious condition. His office denied the reports by outlets such as Le Monde and France 24, however, branding them "fake news."

The Tripoli-based Libyan Observer, considered close to the UN-recognized Government of National Accord, reported Haftar's passing on Friday, and posted photos of people in Tripoli celebrating his death.

Pipeline politics: One of the motives behind Israel's warmongering in the Middle East

Israel pipeline politics
In the over two decades that an American-installed puppet ruled over Iran prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran and Israel maintained friendly ties. In 1968, the two countries set up a joint venture known as the Eilat-Ashkelon Pipeline Co. (EAPC) to transport Iranian oil to the Mediterranean, primarily after Egypt blocked the Suez Canal. This move hindered Iranian oil exports at the time. Iran was already supplying Israel with the bulk of its oil prior to the formation of EAPC but did so secretly to avoid tension with the Arab world.

For about a decade, the pipeline carried Iranian oil from the Red Sea for export to Europe. Following the fall of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979, the Iranian leadership has been demanding their share of revenue and assets that remained in Israel, no longer a country recognized by the Islamic Republic.

According to Business Insider, no one knows how much profit the EAPC has made or how much it is worth because it is protected in a similar way to Israel's intelligence agencies through the use of gag orders. The source of its oil, while suspected to be mainly from former Soviet states, is also protected by the gag orders. Even Business Insider's report states that the article had to pass through the military censor prior to publishing. However, we do know that the EAPC has reportedly become the largest distributor of oil in Israel with ambitions to become a major hub in the Mediterranean.

Comey's new book is filled with 'anti-Trump' nothingburgers

Comey
On Thursday, as excerpts from former FBI Director James Comey's new book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership," were released, the mainstream media exclaimed in paroxysms of exultation that the book was redolent with bombshells that could genuinely hurt President Trump.

But every supposed bombshell was a nothingburger. Let's take a look at the claims that were supposed to shake the world:

1. Comey writes that when he had dinner with Trump, Trump asked him to investigate the unfounded charge from the infamous dossier that he had watched Russian prostitutes peeing:
He brought up what he called the "golden showers thing": It bothered him if there was "even a one percent chance" his wife, Melania, thought it was true. ... He just rolled on, unprompted, explaining why it couldn't possibly be true, ending by saying he was thinking of asking me to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie. I said it was up to him.

McCabe press leaks 'violated DOJ policy' says Inspector General

McCabe

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe leaked to [the] press in violation of Department of Justice policies and "lacked candor" in discussing the leaks with FBI officials, the DOJ Inspector General said in a damning report.

McCabe authorized the leak to the Wall Street Journal for a story about an ongoing investigation into the Clinton Foundation scandal in 2016. This was revealed last month by the New York Times and the Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the report by DOJ IG Michael Horowitz. The report itself was dated February 2018, but was made public Friday.

Following those revelations, Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe on March 16, just days before he could retire with full benefits.

The investigation focused on leaks to Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter Devlin Barrett, which resulted in an article published on October 30, 2016, and titled "FBI in Internal Feud Over Hillary Clinton Probe."

RT interview with Murad Gazdiev dismantles 'credibility' of key source promoting chemical attack lies in Syria

RT interview with Murad Gazdiev

Important commentary by Murad Gazdiev, on the alleged chemical attacks in Douma, Syria, and the usual suspect sources purveying these lies, which include the Syrian American Medical Society.

Gazdiev:
"It was the Syrian SAMS-the Syrian American Medical Society-that initially claimed that they had treated 500 people with with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent.

...Well what is this organization exactly? Well, it is it is an organization that is funded by the United States. In 2013 they had a budget of $700,000, 2015 they had a budget of $6 million - almost a tenfold increase.

Most of that money, $5.8 million, came from USAID, which is an organization that is closely tied to the State Department which is banned in multiple countries because of interference in domestic politics, because of what is seen as its drive for regime change. It even has an office of transition initiatives which is exactly what it is being called, this regime change office.

SOTT Focus: How London and the White Helmets Staged the Douma "Chemical Attack"

El portavoz del Ministerio de Defensa ruso, Igor Konashenkov, durante una reunión con un grupo de militares del país.
Last year when the U.S. military launched a cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase after allegations of a chemical weapons attack at Khan Sheikhoun, many commentators grasped the obvious implication: in the future, whenever so-called moderate rebel terrorists were being routed by the Syrian and Russian militaries, all that the terrorists would have to do is stage another "chemical weapons" attack and broadcast it via their White Helmets propaganda network. This would essentially act as a call for American air support.

U.S. government spokespeople even said that any future chemical weapons attacks would be automatically blamed on Syria and Russia. In the real world, that's called a blank check. Since any apparent chemical weapons attack will automatically be blamed on Syria and Russia, and will be responded to with a cruise-missile attack on Syrian military positions, Syria's enemies have a major incentive to give the appearance that civilians have suffered from a chemical weapons attack. It's not rocket science.

Bolton and Mattis argue over Syria strike as Assad moves weapons

Bolton Mattis
The latest reports rolling in from Syria suggest that both the Assad regime and Hezbollah have evacuated weapons from likely targets, after CNBC revealed that the U.S. has selected 8 targets to strike, including two airfields, a research center and an alleged chemical weapons facility - after US officials told a reporter they were "fairly confident" the Syrian regime had been behind a gas attack in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.
Mr. Assad was moving to protect his air force by moving planes to a Russian-operated base equipped with sophisticated air defenses, according to pro-regime media. -WSJ
The Wall St. Journal also reports that broad plans are being crafted by the U.S., France and Britain for a military strike, while President Trump told reporters on Thursday "We're looking very, very seriously, very closely at that whole situation, and we'll see what happens, folks, we'll see what happens. It's too bad that the world puts us in a position like that."

Senators move for new bipartisan bill to protect Mueller

Schumer defends Mueller
A group of bipartisan senators is introducing new legislation to limit President Trump's ability to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.

Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Christopher Coons (D-Del.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) will introduce the legislation, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, on Wednesday.

The legislation would let Mueller, or any other special counsel, receive an "expedited judicial review" within 10 days of being fired to determine if it was for a "good cause." If it was determined it wasn't, he would be reinstated.

Trump set to pardon Scooter Libby, former Cheney lackey who took the fall for outing Valerie Plame as CIA agent

President Donald Trump is poised to pardon Scooter J. Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, according to sources familiar with the president's thinking.

The president has already signed off on the pardon, which is something he has been considering for several months, sources told ABC News.

The move would mark another controversial pardon for Trump and could raise questions as an increasing number of the president's political allies have landed themselves in legal jeopardy. The White House has repeatedly said that no pardons are currently on the table for people caught up in the Russia investigation.

Early in his term, Trump pardoned controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio after he was found guilty in July on criminal contempt charges stemming from his refusal to stop imprisoning suspected undocumented immigrants.

Comment: It's likely that Libby was only what doing what he was told to do by his boss, Dick Cheney, who wanted to discredit Valerie Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, who was an early critic of the Bush Administration's lies in the push for war in Iraq in 2003.
