British ex-MI6 chief thinks Western intervention saves lives, wants to bomb Syria

A former UK intelligence chief appeared on the BBC to push for Western strikes on Syria, and also found time to suggest an earlier intervention from the US and its allies may have saved lives.

The former head of MI6 was interviewed on the BBC's flagship Today program on Thursday. It's an interview that may well be studied by historians as the very epitome of the way the British establishment talks to itself, and fails to learn the lessons of its own actions.

Sir John Sawers was MI6 chief from 2009 to 2014, and absolutely buys into the idea that Western bombs have some kind of humanitarian power, which may come as a surprise to people living in Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, to name just a few.

The logic used to condone his call for intervention in Syria over an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma was perhaps best summed up when Sawers said:
"More people have been killed, more damage has been done in the Syrian civil war in which we didn't intervene, than in the Iraqi war in which we did intervene."

Comment: If Sawers is any example of the intelligence community who has input into the way the West conducts its operations in Syria...Geez! Even the radio host has a better understanding.

Duterte threatens ICC prosecutor: 'It's illegal and I will arrest you'

Duterte

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to arrest an International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, arguing she had no right conduct investigations as his country was no longer under ICC jurisdiction.

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda was confronted after her announcement to start a preliminary examination into a complaint by a Philippine lawyer who had accused Duterte of crimes against humanity.

Duterte challenged Bensouda and the ICC's jurisdiction over him, telling reporters: "What is your [ICC] authority now? If we are not members of the treaty, why are you...in this country?" The tough talking leader vowed to arrest the ICC prosecutor if she did not withdraw: "You cannot exercise any proceedings here without basis. That is illegal and I will arrest you."

Although his threats were aimed at the prosecutor, Duterte's outrage is believed to have followed an alleged international effort to expose him as a "ruthless and heartless violator of human rights."

Stephen Cohen to Tucker Carlson: Americans in Syria will die if Syria is attacked (VIDEO)

Carlson Cohen
Will U.S. action in Syria lead to conflict with Russia?

American scholar and professor emeritus of Russian studies at Princeton University and New York University, Stephen Cohen...
"If Russians die, if Damascus is attacked (the capital of Syria), Russia will retaliate with its excellent weapons, every bit as good as ours...some people say in some regards the missile technology better.

Russia will strike, Americans in Syria will die."

"We will be where we have never, ever, ever been with Russia, killing each other...bearing in mind that both nations are laden with Nuclear weapons.

So I am more worried than I have ever been in my life, at least since the Cuban missile crisis."

Comment: And not only in Syria; Russia has also promised to strike the platforms ie. bases and boats from which a US attack originates from. Russia means it. The Americans, the French, and the Brits all know it. Now we get to find out how crazy the anti-Assad coalition is.

The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman sat down with Britain's Sky News for a unique one-on-one.

With the world seemingly spiraling deeper into crisis over an alleged chemical attack in Douma, Syria and threats of direct conflict with Russia flying from Donald Trump's Twitter account, Russia's disarming but stern foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova sat down with the UK's Sky News for a rare one-on-one interview.

Zakharova spoke in English in the over half an hour exchange, voicing Moscow's position on US and allied threats of assault on Syria, and the status of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, whom Russia stands blamed by London of poisoning.

Trump walks back from his threat - "never said when attack on Syria would take place"

US President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to clarify that he never specified when the US would conduct an attack on Syria.

"Never said when an attack on Syria would take place," Trump wrote on Thursday. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

Trump also credited his administration with defeating ISIS in Syria. "In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our "Thank you America?" he tweeted.

Trump's tweet comes a day after he warned Russia to "get ready" for a missile strike on Syria. The US is considering a military response over a reported chemical weapons attack on the rebel enclave of Douma on April 7.

Comment: A positive sign. That doesn't change the facts though. As Russian UN ambassador Nebenzya put it yesterday:
"The threat to international peace and security is a violation of the UN charter. We're very concerned with the situation, with this dangerous escalation. We hope that there will be no point of no return, that the US and their allies will refrain from military action against the sovereign state," Russia's envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, told reporters on Thursday.

The "immediate priority" for the UN must be "to avert the danger of war," the diplomat stressed, stating that since Russian troops are deployed in Syria, the conflict can easily spill out of the country in case of any foreign attack. The second most important thing is to ensure the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) specialists, who are expected to embark on their fact-finding mission on Saturday.

"You understand that the danger of escalation is higher than simply Syria, because our military are there on the invitation of the Syrian government, so the situation is very dangerous," Nebenzia said.

Russia advocates an open discussion in the UN on the situation around Syria and threats to "international peace and security." This discussion should be held with the participation of the UN Secretary-General, Nebenzia said. The diplomat did not give any details, but said such talks would be held in "the near future."
And today:
"The irresponsible behavior of the US, trampling on the international law and on the sovereignty of the other countries is unworthy of their status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This status needs the highest degree of responsibility, and not the right to saber rattle, inexistent in the international behavior code," Nebenzia stated.

The whole situation with the threats against Syria, made by the US and its allies, resembles their previous aggressive actions, namely in Iraq and Libya, when the UN was used simply to justify their steps, the Russian envoy added.

"The perpetrators are named before any investigation, and apparently they are to be punished," Nebenzia said. "The US has adopted a largely consumerist approach to the UNSC. The Security Council is needed for them simply to cover the Iraqi test tubes or the Libyan no-flight zone. You are showing us the same virtual empty test tube now, too."

Lavrov's perception management play with Erdogan over Afrin occupation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
© Mikhail Japaridze/TASSRussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
The curious episode earlier this week of President Erdogan rebuffing Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov's request to return Afrin to Damascus' control was nothing more than a brilliant display of perception management by the Moscow diplomat and confirms his reputation as being one of the most skillful practitioners of this art in history.

The Seeds Of Scandal

The world's been so focused on the US-Russian standoff in Syria throughout the entire week that most people outside of the Arab Republic missed the curious exchange between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Turkish President Erdogan over Afrin, but that's mostly because it was objectively a "non-event" in the first place and nothing more than a brilliant display of perception management mostly intended for the Syrian domestic audience anyhow. What happened was that Lavrov curiously announced on the same day that Russia once again sat back and passively allowed "Israel" to bomb Syria that Moscow believes that Ankara should hand Afrin back to Damascus' control, which would restore the democratically elected and legitimate country's sovereignty over the formerly "federalist"-infested region. Moreover, he also said that "Erdogan has never said that Turkey wants to occupy Afrin", which totally contradicted the prevailing Alt-Media dogma that Ankara was supposedly preparing to annex the area as part of some "Neo-Ottoman" plot.

It's unbelievable that one of the most seasoned diplomats in history, one who has extensive years-long experience working with the Turkish leader and has obviously been briefed multiple times by the Russian intelligence services on his psychological profile, would seriously think President Erdogan would do what he asked, let alone after having been visibly "called out" in public despite the priceless soft power boost that he gave him by reassuring the world that Ankara harbors no intentions of occupying Afrin. As could have been expected, President Erdogan responded negatively by saying that "Lavrov's approach is not correct (because) we know better than anyone to which side Afrin should be transferred (so) when the time comes, we will give Afrin to its inhabitants." This was widely interpreted in the pro-Syrian Alt-Media Community as a crushing blow to Russian prestige and evidence of the weaponized conspiracy theory that Turkey is supposedly moments away from "backstabbing" Russia again and therefore can't ever be trusted.

Russian MoD: Syria 'chemical attack' staged to provoke US airstrike, London pushed perpetrators

The Russian Defense Ministry has presented what it says is proof that the reported chemical weapons attack in Syria was staged. It also accused the British government of pressuring the perpetrators to speed up the "provocation."

During a briefing on Friday, the ministry showed interviews with two people, who, it said, are medical professionals working in the only hospital operating in Douma, a town near the Syrian capital, Damascus.

In the interviews released to the media, the two men reported how footage was shot of people dousing each other with water and treating children, which was claimed to show the aftermath of the April 7 chemical weapons attack. The patients shown in the video suffered from smoke poisoning and the water was poured on them by their relatives after a false claim that chemical weapons were used, the ministry said.

Comment: Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya noted that the US is apparently playing out a military scenario in Syria, which can have grave consequences for the global security, taking into consideration the fact that Russian military forces are present in the country.
Moscow has information that militants were ordered to launch an offensive in Syria after Washington's possible military action in the country, according to the envoy. He added that terrorists would benefit from feasible attack on Syrian government troops.

"We continue to observe dangerous preparations for an illegal military action against a sovereign state in breach of international law. Not only the use of force, but also a threat to use it violates the UN Charter," Nebenzya said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Lavrov responds to Boris Johnson's braindead comment on OPCW report - blames Western intel agency for Douma provocation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that his British counterpart Boris Johnson's comments regarding the OPCW investigation report about the alleged nerve agent attack in Salisbury appear to be aimed at distorting the truth.

While UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson declared that the recent investigation conducted the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons regarding the so called Skripals' affair confirm earlier findings made by British authorities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted that his British colleague distorts the truth.

"The OPCW merely confirmed the composition of the chemical substance. And the closed part of their report merely contains a lengthy chemical formula of said substance; it doesn't contain any literary titles, stating instead that this substance is not listed in the Chemical Weapons Convention," the minister explained.

Lavrov also remarked that the report contains a lot of "interesting moments" which Moscow will make public as soon as Russian experts finish scrutinizing the document.

US and allies threat of war is holding the world hostage

So, the world is counting the hours to see whether the US and its allies will launch a military strike on Syria. If this war plan goes ahead, the attack will be furious - and the repercussions grave, as Russia sternly warned this week.

Indeed, we are talking about the very real danger that any US-led military action against Syria will rapidly escalate into a region-wide, or even world war.

Russia has alerted that any missiles targeting its ally Syria will be shot down and their launchers destroyed. The latter inevitably means US warplanes and naval vessels.

'Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR': Trump tears into former FBI Director for prostitute comment

Trump and Comey

US President Donald Trump tore into former FBI Director James Comey on Friday, after Comey told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos "it's possible" Trump was with prostitutes in Moscow in 2013.

"James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR," read a tweet from the president. "He is a weak and untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI." Trump then savaged Comey for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's missing emails, and concluded that "It was my great honor to fire James Comey."

Trump's rage comes after Comey told ABC's Stephanopoulos that he might believe lewd allegations revealed in an unverified intelligence dossier before Trump's inauguration.

"I honestly never thought these words would come out of my mouth, but I don't know whether the current president of the United States was with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow in 2013," said Comey. "It's possible but I don't know."
