Trump lawyers bid for unlimited presidential authority in effort to end Russiagate investigation

Jay Sekulow
Trump attorney Jay Sekulow
In a 20-page letter sent to Special Counsel Robert Mueller in January, two of President Trump's private lawyers argued that Trump had the authority to order an end to the Russia investigation and to pardon anyone targeted by it. This assertion of unlimited presidential power was made public Saturday, when the New York Times published an account of the letter as well as its full text.

The apparent purpose of the letter was to respond to pressure from the special counsel for Trump to testify under oath about a range of issues. These relate to claims both of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russian government operatives and of obstruction of justice by Trump in connection with his firing of FBI Director James Comey after Comey rebuffed suggestions that he "go easy" on former Trump National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

The two Trump attorneys were John Dowd, who has since resigned, and Jay Sekulow, who remains part of the team of lawyers handling Trump's response to the Mueller investigation. Recent additions to this group include former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Emmet Flood, who worked as part of the team defending President Bill Clinton against impeachment in 1998-99.

Palestinian Foreign Minister refers Israel to ICC for war crimes

Palestinian representative says 'further delaying justice for Palestinian victims is tantamount to denial of justice'

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki asked prosecutors at the International Criminal Court on Tuesday to launch a full investigation into accusations of Israeli human rights abuses on Palestinian territory, saying the evidence was "insurmountable".

Maliki submitted a "referral" giving the prosecutor at the Hague-based court the legal basis to move beyond a preliminary inquiry started in January 2015.

He said the request would give prosecutors the authority to investigate alleged crimes starting in 2014 and beyond, including last week's deaths during protests in Gaza.

Comment: Israel investigates its crimes alright - but somehow always manages to exonerate itself of wrong-doing.

Newly released documents show Hillary's State Department shopped Benghazi story to compliant WSJ reporter one week after attack

hillary benghazi
The FBI released new documents Friday showing Hillary's State Department pitched a Benghazi story to a Wall Street Journal reporter who enthusiastically complied.

Hillary Clinton's State Department gave stand down orders to Special Ops forces ready to go in and help Americans who were surrounded by hundreds of Islamic insurgents in Benghazi, Libya on September 11-12th, 2012.

The movie '13 Hours' gives personal accounts from eyewitnesses who were in Benghazi when Islamic terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound.

We lost FOUR Americans that night. Tyrone Woods, Sean Smith, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and Glen Doherty. Never forget.

Benghazi killed

Comment: The Benghazi attack is another Hillary-related story of high corruption and criminal malfeasance that just continues to keep on giving...

The US fighting trade wars with most of the world simultaneously will not be good for the economy

spinning earth with light
One trade war may be enough to push the struggling global economy into another recession, but the U.S. government has apparently decided that it is time to fight trade wars with pretty much all of the major economies around the world at the same time. This is utter insanity, and it is going to have disastrous consequences that will be felt all over the planet. Yes, we need to get tough on trade. If you have followed my work for the last eight years, than you know that I have been a very strong advocate of protecting U.S. manufacturers and U.S. workers. But these things have got to be handled delicately, because any significant disruption at this point could lead to an absolutely crippling global economic crisis. Negotiating on an international level requires a great deal of finesse, because if you mess up it can have monumental consequences. For example, one thing that you shouldn't do is make an agreement with the second largest economy in the world and then tear it up less than two weeks later...

Comment: The outcome of all this, most likely, will be that the average person will suffer.

Putin chastizes Macron over Iran sanctions on video: You're not sovereign, you're "like obedient little children"

There has been much talk of Macron behaving like the leader of a sovereign nation recently, but we don't buy it.

To us, he still has the manner of a schoolboy trying hard to ingratiate himself with grownups. Plus, he is distinctly effeminate.

He obviously didn't get to where he is on his own merits, rather he was put there by people who are probably not very effeminate.

Putin is a plain-spoken, no BS kind of guy, so this exchange was entertaining.

Comment: Putin is adept at dealing with duplicitous weasels like Macron:

The SDS was ahead of the pack with 26.3 percent after some 25 percent of votes had been counted, the State Election Commission said. They were followed by Lista Marjana Sarca (LMS), which was running in the election for the first time, with 12.2 percent.

A total of 25 parties contested the election in the Balkan republic, with nine of them expected to make it to parliament, according to exit polls.

MH17: A sinister choreography by NATO powers to smear Russia

MH17 wreckage
The Dutch-led probe into the 2014 Malaysian airliner disaster has the hallmarks of a psychological operation to frame-up Russia and to justify further sanctions and aggression from the NATO powers.

The so-called Joint Investigation Team (JIT) released an update last Thursday on its ongoing probe into the MH17 air disaster over Eastern Ukraine, in which all 298 people onboard were killed. The JIT's latest release moves the accusation of culpability closer to Russia, with the team claiming that an anti-aircraft Buk missile, which allegedly shot down the plane, was brought into Ukraine by Russia's 53rd Brigade based in Kursk, southwest Russia.

Then on Friday, the day after the high-profile JIT presentation, a news report compiled by US-based McClatchy News and UK-based self-styled online investigative website Bellingcat was published claiming to have identified a senior Russian military intelligence (GRU) officer as being involved in the transport of the missile system.

The Russian GRU officer is named as Oleg Vladimirovich Ivannikov. The report includes a photograph of the named man, who is said to have at least one residential address in Moscow and who used the call sign "Orion". Tellingly, the McClatchy report claims that news of identifying the Russian military officer was not known by the JIT when it made its presentation the day before. But McClatchy reported that the Dutch-led investigators now want to arraign "Orion".

Over the weekend, the Dutch, Australian and British governments upped the ante by formally accusing Russia, and demanding that Moscow pay financial compensation to families of the crash victims. Most of those onboard the doomed MH17 were Dutch, Malaysian and Australian nationals.

Comment: So Russia provides exhaustive evidence that it was a Ukrainian BUK missile and Ukraine, via their questionable sources comes up with a dodgy story based on some grainy photos trying to pin-it on Russia. Just like with the Skripals, they would have us believe Russia would do something that is clearly against their own interests and without much benefit to their country.

Pepe Escobar: The Syria connection to Iran, Afghanistan and China

A crucial question has been consuming policymakers in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon: Does the Trump administration have a strategic plan for the Middle East or not?

Few are more apt to answer than Saadallah Zarei, dean of the Institute of Strategic Studies Andishe Sazan-e Noor in Tehran. Zarei, a soft-spoken, extremely discreet man I met in Mashhad a few days ago, happens to be not only one of Iran's top strategic analysts but also a key brain behind the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Qods Force commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani - the ultimate bête noire outside the Beltway.

So US strategists could do worse than paying attention to Zarei.

While the US "owns 37 fixed military bases and almost 70 movable bases in the Middle East", Zarei said, "We do not observe specific and exact strategies."

He stressed his perplexity with "contradictory behavior related to the Shi'ite population. America's behavior in terms of the Shi'ite population of Bahrain and their rights, the Zaydi Shi'ite population in Yemen and Kashmir and also the Shi'ite population in Lebanon, which is 35% of the total population, is not specified and nobody knows how the Americans think about Shi'ites and how they act."

Former CIA chief Brennan's selective outrage over Trump

Brennan

To hear the former CIA director turned NBC pundit John Brennan tell it, Donald Trump has destroyed the prestige of American presidency. Intent on playing his part in the #Resistance, Brennan glosses over some genuine horrors.

The career spy, who led the CIA during President Barack Obama's second term (2013-2017) penned an angry op-ed in Thursday's Washington Post, blasting President Trump's character and temperament and lavishing praise on his predecessors.

Trump has diminished the "respect, awe and admiration" Brennan once held for the office of the presidency, the former top spy writes. With stars in his eyes, Brennan recalls meeting George H.W. Bush in 1990, and being charmed by the "curiosity, wisdom, affability and intense interest" of the Texan who led the CIA before becoming Ronald Reagan's vice-president and a one-term chief executive.

By contrast, he writes, Trump is impulsive, dangerous, bent on self-aggrandizement and a routine liar to the American people. To those who follow Brennan's twitter, the tirade is all too familiar.

Israeli Air Force jets have launched a series of strikes on Gaza, allegedly destroying several of Hamas' arms depots and manufacturing facilities, in response to projectiles fired against Israel and other "terrorist activities."

"Moments ago, IAF fighter jets targeted 10 terror sites in three military compounds belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a statement. "The strikes were conducted in response to the rockets that were fired and to the various terror activities orchestrated by the Hamas terror organization over the weekend."
