UK names suspects in Skripal poisoning - PM May says they are Russian military intelligence but analysts and Kremlin think otherwise

UK prosecutors named two Russians they suspect of poisoning the Skripals - Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov - charging them with the attempted murder of the ex-double agent and his daughter along with a police officer.

British police said the suspects were traveling on authentic Russian passports and had arrived in the UK days before the incident.

Neil Basu, the head of Counter Terrorism policing, said the two suspects were traveling under aliases but were around 40-years-old and had Russian passports.

Basu noted that traces of Novichok contamination were found in the London hotel room where the two men had stayed. He said they arrived in Britain on March 2 and left on March 4.

"Tests were carried out in the hotel room where the suspects had stayed. Two swabs showed contamination of Novichok of levels below that which would cause concern for public health," Basu added.

Comment: Former British military officer and security expert Charles Shoebridge makes a very important point regarding the "work" done in the Skripal case:
"It seems very strange that these people have absolutely left what seems to be a very reckless and clear trail of evidence, which almost seems to be designed, or at least would almost inevitably lead to the conclusions that the police and the authorities have come to today, in other words that Russia were to blame," he told RT. "So many mistakes were made, if indeed they were mistakes."
Intelligence officers are highly trained in covering their tracks and leaving no evidence behind. What seems much more likely is that Western intelligence agents or individuals connected to them staged the scene to make it look like something that would lead investigators to a specific narrative, specifically that Russian agents were behind the Skripal attack.

Clearly the media and the official UK government is swallowing the narrative wholly. In response to this news, Britain has summoned Russia's charge d'affaires in London. Theresa May has declared to the world that the two suspects are "Russian intelligence officers". Shoebridge makes the astute point that May will use this opportunity strengthen her political standing within the UK government, so expect her to take a very strong stance and use the story to distract from the internal issues in the UK gov't.

Annie Machon, a former MI5 intelligence officer, told RT she found it suspicious that the inquiry into the Salisbury incident has effectively turned into this trial by media, based on "bits of evidence that may look pretty compelling but will never be tested in a real court of law."

"You know, even if it is finally proven that [the suspects] were GRU officers, there's high probability they may indeed be rogue - how would you know what the thinking was within the GRU?" she suggested, adding British and US intelligence agencies, for their part, do carry out covert operations without proper oversight.

SOTT Focus: Fake Book Based on Fake News Based on Fake Intel: Bob Woodward Novella 'Fear' Portrays Trump as Impetuous Madman

fear woodward
On the left is the actual cover of Woodward's 'book'. On the right is the image it's meant to convey: absolute terror.
President Trump and those close to him have challenged the narrative of Bob Woodward's new book, which portrays him as "a 5th-grader" ready to make rash decisions, such as ordering the assassination of Assad.

"The Woodward book has already been refuted and discredited by General (Secretary of Defense) James Mattis and General (Chief of Staff) John Kelly," Trump tweeted on Tuesday afternoon, after excerpts from the book were published by the Washington Post and other publications. The manuscript, which is scheduled for release next week, contains many quotes that were "made up frauds," Trump said, calling the book's narrative "a con on the public."

Rejecting the claims that senior aides have been plucking sensitive documents off his desk to prevent him from making rash decisions, Trump noted in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller that the bulk of the stories in the book were just a compilation of "nasty stuff" totally "made up" by the famed Watergate Washington Post reporter.

Trump was not the only one to slam Woodward's claims, which present the US leader as an impulsive decision-maker, who is sometimes called an "idiot" and a "liar" even by those closest to him:

Comment: No doubt it'll be taken apart for the pack of lies it is, just like that Wolff character's book. By then though, the media circus will have moved on to some other schmuck's 'book'.

Erdogan: Working with Russia 'really important' to prevent Idlib 'massacre'

Ahead of a major Syrian army offensive on the rebel-held city of Idlib, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed cooperation with Russia to prevent a "serious massacre" and a millions-strong refugee influx into his country.

A massive operation to retake Idlib from Islamist militants might see scores of refugees trying to find shelter in Turkey, Erdogan has warned on the back of reports that the Syrian army is gearing up for such an offensive.

"There are about 3.5 million people there [in Idlib]. Russia and the United States pass the buck to each other. However, God forbid, if missiles target the area, a serious massacre will take place," Erdogan said, as quoted by Turkish media. "In such a case, where will all these people who want to flee violence go? They will, to a large extent, flee to us," he predicted.

War Crimes: Israeli military admits to carrying out more than 200 strikes in Syria over the last 18 months

The Israeli military has admitted that over the past 18 months it carried out more than 200 strikes in Syria, which it claims destroyed hundreds of alleged Iranian targets, local media report.

Accusing Tehran of constants attempts to gain a foothold in Syria, and potentially deploy tens of thousands of soldiers on the ground, the IDF on Tuesday said that it carried out attacks against at least 202 "Iranian targets" on its neighbor's soil. Overall, 792 bombs and missiles were launched at Syria since 2017, the IDF said on Tuesday during a special briefing with military correspondents.

Summarizing the achievements over the past year, after Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot issued a "highly confidential" report to the political echelon about the "Competence and Preparedness of the IDF," the military stressed that Iran is still determined to smuggle in weapons and establish air bases as well as intelligence capabilities in Syria.

Why is Pompeo ramping up call for 'diplomacy' with Idlib's head-chopping terrorists?

Well, that's precious. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo this week says he shares Russia's concern about Syria's Idlib Province being a haven for terrorists - but nevertheless he is urging diplomacy to solve the problem.

Pompeo's pumping of diplomacy sounds decidedly like a lot of deceitful hot air.

Why didn't the Americans think of diplomacy when their warplanes were obliterating the Syrian city of Raqqa last year, with thousands of civilians blown to pieces? And even in spite of all that carnage, the terror groups were reportedly given safe passage out of Raqqa by US forces to regroup elsewhere in Syria.

Thus the belated call for diplomacy from Pompeo has a huge credibility deficit. This is the same Pompeo who as the former CIA chief once said he wanted the lawless spy agency to become even meaner in its methods of extrajudicial violence.

Russian jets strike only terrorist targets in Syria's Idlib says MoD

Russian military planes launched precision strikes against Jabhat an-Nusra objects in Syria's Idlib province on September 4, the Russian Defense Ministry has revealed, countering reports of civilians falling prey to bombardment.

The statement comes after speculation that Russian aircraft in fact bombed civilian targets in the area on Tuesday and that the assault led to casualties.

Moscow, for its part, has repeatedly warned that the area is the last stronghold for the terrorists, where militants, among others, have their weapons stockpiled. A particular point of concern, Russia said, were plans by terrorists to stage a fake chemical attack with the aim of framing Damascus. Especially worrying was that militants also received their weapons from "forces from abroad."

"High-precision munitions" targeted the terrorists' sites, according to Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov.

Comment: This comes in stark contrast to the Saudi's bombing a school bus and a hospital in Yemen, and the West repeatedly bombing schools, hospitals, baby formula factories, and so on, all over the Middle East

Ambassador Kurt Volker: US ready to drastically expand military assistance to Ukraine

Kurt Volker
Washington is upping the ante in Ukraine. Kurt Volker, US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, said in an interview with the Guardian published on September 1 that "Washington is ready to expand arms supplies to Ukraine in order to build up the country's naval and air defense forces in the face of continuing Russian support for eastern separatists." According to him, the Trump administration was "absolutely" prepared to go further in supplying lethal weaponry to Ukrainian forces than the anti-tank missiles it delivered in April. "They need lethal assistance," he emphasized. Mr. Volker explained that "[t]hey need to rebuild a navy and they have very limited air capability as well. I think we'll have to look at air defense." The diplomat believes Ukraine needs unmanned aerial vehicles, counter-battery radar systems, and anti-sniper systems. The issue of lethal arms purchases has been discussed at the highest level.

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 allocated $250m in military assistance to Ukraine, including lethal arms. The US has delivered Javelin anti-tank missile systems to Kiev but this time the ambassador talked about an incomparably larger deal. Former President Barack Obama had been unconvinced that granting Ukraine lethal defensive weapons would be the right decision, in view of the widespread corruption there. This policy has changed under President Trump, who - among other things - approved deliveries of anti-tank missiles to Kiev last December.

If there are no refugees, no need for a right of return: The US war on UNRWA and Palestinian refugees

UNRWA protest US aid cuts Palestine
© Mahmoud Ajour/ APA ImagesPalestinian employees of United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) take part in a protest against a U.S. decision to cut aid, outside its offices, in Gaza City, on Aug. 02 2018.
The Trump administration has pledged full funding to an oft-maligned UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees... Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, has privately assured the UN Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, that the United States... will maintain its current levels of funding to the organization.... Haley has emerged as an unlikely champion of UNRWA.

"US Vows To Fund A UN Agency For Palestinian Refugees [that] Israeli Leader Wants Shuttered." Foreign Policy, August 24, 2017
The intervening year has been a race of power against protest.

Gazan Palestinians protest in order to be seen and heard, resisting the blockade and claiming their rights.

Trump and those around him have spent the year trying to obviate - rather than solve - Palestinian claims. Now they wish to deny the refugee status of 90% of Palestinians. If Trump has his way, only a few elderly refugees will remain. The Right of Return will be moot. It would not exist now, he says, if UNRWA didn't keep it alive. He will make the right disappear by de-funding UNRWA and de-registering its five million phantom refugees - or, rather, five million descendants of a number of actual refugees. After seventy years, it's time for the descendants to disperse quietly.

Once that is done, return can remain the privilege of Jews - or, rather, of the descendants of Jews. Our claims have somehow not been diluted by our millenia of dispersion.

Comment: There is a deeper, more evil agenda afoot as the US cuts UNRWA aid to Palestinian refugees

Now they care about civilians? State Dept. says US, Turkey agree 'any' Syrian offensive in Idlib 'unacceptable'

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke on Tuesday over the phone with his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, about the situation in Idlib, Syria.

The statement on the call, attributable to State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert, takes a stronger position against than the one taken by US President Donald Trump the day prior.

"President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy," Trump tweeted on Monday. "Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don't let that happen!"

Comment: One might wonder if Erdogan has woken up to the fact that an assault on Idlib would send thousands of jihadists (which he supports) scurrying north into Turkey. The US won't rescue all of them, just the White Helmets PR wing, if that. He would have a security nightmare on his hands.
