In response to the IISS study, titled Iran's Networks Of Influence In The Middle East, a spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in London told the BBC, "If the report means that Iran's role in its region should be respected, it is a welcome sign."This is the real reason Iran is considered an enemy by the U.S. and Israel - because they are formidable. If Iran were weak, they wouldn't matter so much, but because they have successfully built up their military power, they are deemed a threat. Israel cannot practice absolute hegemony in the region, and the U.S. cannot control Iran and thus protect Israel. The only reason Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization is because they are a threat to Israel. Iran's 'effective power' is also the reason why the U.S. has yet to attack them as they did Iraq - a war with Iran would not be a cakewalk.
"The policy of ignoring Iran did not work. Iran resisted. Iran has also successfully controlled damages of U.S. economic terrorism," the Iranian Embassy spokesman said.
Iran "is a powerful nation and has a lot of relations with other nations with a lot of initiatives for regional cooperation," he added.
