Technocracy 101: If Fed and CDC are 'independent,' elections mean nothing

faceless money

Basic civics recap: the US president, per the Constitution, is the elected executive. That means he is tasked with executing government functions.

He is granted - again, through a theoretically democratic election process - the authority to dictate government activities within the confines of the laws. The legislative branch passes laws; the judicial branch vets them for constitutionality; the executive implements them.

The process, as designed, is not at all vague.

How odd, then, that the Biden White House press secretaries - first Jen Psaki and now the admitted diversity hire Karine Jean-Pierre - repeatedly undermine their own president's executive authority.

Whenever they're asked about Federal Reserve or CDC (Centers for Disease Control) policies — government agencies under the umbrella of executive authority — they refuse to give a straight answer on the grounds that the government body in question is 'Independent.'

"The Federal Reserve is independent. We leave them to make their own policy decisions. We do not get involved in that."

The head of Ukraine's Security Service has allegedly fallen out of favor with the Ukrainian president.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly has plans to fire his childhood friend, Ivan Bakanov, from his role as head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), according to a report published on Thursday by Politico, citing four Kiev officials.

Bakanov, who has been at Zelensky's side since high school and served as his manager during his early days as a comedian, has allegedly drawn the ire of the Ukrainian leader over his alleged unprofessionalism. Zelensky reportedly blames Bakanov for allowing a string of mishaps and mass desertions in his agency since the start of Russia's military offensive against the country and is now looking to replace him with someone "more suitable to serve as the wartime chief of the SBU."

US censorship of Russian media has failed - Microsoft

RT and Sputnik still reach American audiences despite Big Tech suppression on behalf of Ukraine.

Silicon Valley's efforts to suppress what it terms "Russian propaganda" - meaning outlets like RT and Sputnik - on behalf of Ukraine may have reduced their reach, but they are still accessed by more Americans than before the outbreak of fighting between Moscow and Kiev.

That's according to Microsoft, in a report on the ongoing internet-war on behalf of the Ukrainians.

Kiev has relied on a "coalition of countries, companies, and NGOs" for cyber defense, moving its digital infrastructure to the public cloud hosted in the West, according to the report titled Defending Ukraine: Early Lessons from the Cyber War, published on Wednesday and signed by Brad Smith, president and vice chair of Microsoft.

EU should end sanctions on Russia - Hungarian PM's aide

Any further sanctions on Moscow would only hurt the EU economy without significantly impacting Russia, a senior aide to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Reuters on Thursday.

Brussels should stop targeting Russia with new restrictions and focus on alternative means of achieving peace in Ukraine, such as negotiations, Balazs Orban said.

The official, who is not related to Hungary's prime minister, was speaking on the sidelines of the EU summit that granted Ukraine candidate status. He argued that the restrictions already imposed on Russia by the bloc had failed to change Moscow's course on Ukraine or stop its ongoing military operation. Meanwhile, the EU has witnessed fuel and food price hikes. Orban said:
"At the end of the day, Europe will be on the losing side of this war because of the economic problems. Our recommendation would be that we should stop the sanction process. Right now, what we experience is that the more sanctions we accept, the worse shape we are in. And the Russians? Yes, it hurts them as well, but they survive. And what is even worse, they proceed in Ukraine."

Germany is seeking to convince other G7 nations to abandon a commitment to end direct international financing of overseas fossil fuel projects by the end of this year, Bloomberg reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Berlin is asking Group of Seven members to "acknowledge that publicly supported investment in the gas sector is necessary as a temporary response to the current energy crisis," according to a draft text shared with the agency.

The proposal reportedly remains under discussion and could be altered before Sunday, when the G7 summit kicks off in the Bavarian Alps, hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Britain opposes the proposal, sources said, while there were conflicting reports about whether the Italian authorities would support the plan.

Biden's DOJ to 'use every tool' to facilitate abortions after SCOTUS overturns Roe

Attorney General Merrick Garland

In a statement released Friday on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn abortion landmark ruling Roe v Wade, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the Department of Justice will "use every tool at our disposal" to protect reproductive freedom.

"The Justice Department strongly disagrees with the Court's decision," Garland said.

"This decision deals a devastating blow to reproductive freedom in the United States. It will have an immediate and irreversible impact on the lives of people across the country. And it will be greatly disproportionate in its effect - with the greatest burdens felt by people of color and those of limited financial means," he added.

The granting of EU candidacy to Ukraine is merely a PR stunt, just ask the Turkish who signed the same deal in 1999

For all the talk of helping Ukraine, the bloc simply can't afford to have Kiev as a member.

For the European Union's leadership to recommend that the 27-member bloc votes to designate Ukraine as a candidate for eventual membership is like introducing your dodgy new fiancé to your parents, who fake-smile, knowing that the odds are low of you ever making it down the aisle as a couple.

Worse, it would be like you explaining to them: "I can change/fix him!" Meanwhile, you know that he's a much less attractive partner than your previous ones with whom you failed to seal the deal.

On the one hand, EU Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen has praised the country's potential, based primarily on projection and wishful thinking: "Ukraine has clearly demonstrated its aspiration and determination to live up to European values and standards."

As Ukraine and Moldova receive candidate status, Western Balkan states voice frustrations over prolonged integration process, Die Welt reports
European Union members are locked in heated debates after Ukraine and Moldova were granted candidate status, Germany's Die Welt reports. The news comes amid Western Balkan states voicing their frustration of the admittance process.

According to Die Welt, Thursday's summit between 27 EU leaders and six heads of government from the Western Balkans was expected to be a big breakthrough in regards to accession talks. Among the topics announced was the long-awaited accession process for North Macedonia and Albania, who have been on the EU waiting list for 17 and eight years respectively.

However, those talks never came to pass, after Bulgaria expressed opposition to the acceptance of North Macedonia, citing their long-running disputes over language, history, and the rights of the Bulgarian minority living in North Macedonia.

The U.S. will send another $450 million in military aid to Ukraine, including some additional medium-range rocket systems, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The latest package will include a number of High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, and is expected to be announced later Thursday. The initial four HIMARS that the U.S. sent have already gone into Ukraine and are in the hand of troops there. The package will also include ammunition and other supplies.

The new aid comes just a week after the U.S. announced it will send $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine, and as the Russian military continues to slowly expand its control in the eastern Donbas region. Ukrainian leaders have persistently asked for the more advanced, precision rocket systems in order to better fight back against Russia. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details ahead of an announcement.
