Best of the Web: Julian Assange's Nightmarish Future

While Julian Assange waits for what comes next - sentencing on skipping bail in England and a U.S. extradition request - he is being held in a maximum-security prison in London that has been called the "UK's Guantanamo Bay" and has been used to detain alleged terrorists, sometimes indefinitely.

The reputation of HM Prison Belmarsh raises natural concerns about the wellbeing of the WikiLeaks publisher there.

"While many prisoners at Belmarsh say it's difficult to see a doctor or a nurse, these services are available at the facility," reports Bloomberg News, regarding the possibility of Assange receiving overdue medical attention.

Her Majesty's Prison Belmarsh had been used to detain high-profile national security prisoners indefinitely without charge under the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act of 2001, passed six weeks after 9/11, until the House of Lords ruled it violated the British Human Rights Act.

Assange was found guilty on Thursday of skipping bail. On May 2 he is scheduled to participate in a court hearing via video link on the U.S. extradition request.

Best of the Web: Attempting to drive Iran's oil exports to zero, Trump ends sanctions waivers for countries still doing business with besieged country

god bless america
Team America
The Trump administration will sharply accelerate its goal of driving Iran's oil exports to zero, ending sanctions exemptions that it previously granted to some of the Islamic Republic's biggest customers.

President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a 2015 nuclear accord with Iran last May and restored wide-ranging sanctions on the Iranian economy in November. At the time, his administration granted six-month waivers to eight countries that allowed them to continue importing limited quantities of crude oil from Iran.

The market widely expected Washington to extend the waivers for five of the countries. However, the administration says that any country still importing oil from Iran will be subject to U.S. sanctions beginning on May 2.

Comment: Another recipe for geopolitical disaster. Like sanctioning Russia, the world's resentment towards Washington's unreasonable diktats only hasten the desire to be free of the oppressive and bullying economic hostage-taking that seems to define much of US foreign policy - and take further steps towards strengthening a multi-polar arrangement. Trump may not have designs on all out war with Iran, but what will he be left to do once he fully realizes that Iran has no intention of 'taking the knee'?

Best of the Web: US border militia stops three HUNDRED crossing migrants in SINGLE intervention - Feds respond by arresting leader and 'de-banking' group

The FBI arrested a 69-year-old New Mexico man who allegedly illegally detained immigrants crossing the border under the guise of working for the United States Border Patrol.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who runs The United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), an armed border militia group that spreads far-right conspiracies and rounds up asylum seekers on the border, was arrested by FBI in New Mexico Saturday on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.

Recent video footage released by UCP shows two members holding what appear to be semi-automatic rifles near immigrants, many of them children.

Comment: Well, yeah, they're armed, as they always have been, and kids are pouring over the border. Here's 300 kids from just ONE intervention the UCP made earlier this month:

THAT is why the Feds had to stop them.

Best of the Web: Sri Lanka Terror: Multiple explosions target Catholic churches and luxury hotels on Easter Sunday - Death toll hits 290 - UPDATES

Sri Lanka attacks on Easter Sunday

Six explosions rocked Catholic churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka as Christians began Easter Sunday celebrations, with at least 50 killed and hundreds injured, local authorities confirmed.

The blasts occurred at around 8:45am local time at St. Anthony's Church in Colombo and St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo, a Catholic-majority town outside of the capital. The Zion Church in Batticaloa on the eastern coast was also targeted.

At around the same time, the Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury five-star hotels were also hit, police confirmed. All attacks appear to have been coordinated.

At least 52 people were killed, media reported, citing police.

Comment: Update 16:00 CET

The latest figure is that 207 people were killed, and around 500 injured, from 8 blasts in different cities in Sri Lanka. That death toll is expected to rise...
At least 207 people were killed and hundreds more wounded in a series of bomb blasts that hit luxury hotels and churches across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, leaving the entire country in a state of lock-down.

The first wave of attacks struck at the heart of the country's minority Christian community during busy Easter services at churches in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa on Sunday morning. Additional blasts ripped through three high-end hotels, the Shangri La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury, all in capital city Colombo.

Update 21:30 CET

RT has more details:

The churches are located in three locations on different sides of the island: St. Anthony's Church in its commercial capital Colombo and St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo on the western coast, and the Zion Church in Batticaloa in the east.

The explosions hit as Easter Sunday services were being held, with over 50 people killed in St. Sebastian's alone, according to a police official cited by Reuters. Over 25 people were reportedly killed in Batticaloa.

All three hotels are located in Colombo, one of them - Cinnamon Grand - about 200 meters from the prime minister's residence, and the other two not much further away.

Also, 10 days ago, Sri Lanka's national police chief reportedly sent out an alert about a radical Islamist group planning bomb attacks on prominent churches in the country.

The alert was sent by Pujuth Jayasundara on April 11, according to AFP. The alert said:
"A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian High Commission in Colombo..."
That's pretty much what just happened. Which foreign intelligence agency, inquiring minds would like to know...

Here's footage of a bomb going off at a church in Colombo:

This was clearly a sophisticated multi-site, coordinated operation - the worst to hit the Indian subcontinent since 2008 in Mumbai. Police have arrested 7 people suspected of involvement, during raids which cost three police lives.

Turkey's Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has compared the attacks to the recent shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand. He may not have had this in mind but the perpetrators (the handlers, not the hired guns) may have sought to provide a 'balancing counterweight' to the outrage at Muslims being killed during religious worship in mosques.

12 hours later, no group has yet claimed responsibility, and there's no obvious suspect. There has been no violence in Sri Lanka since its civil war ended 10 years ago, so the country has had no flare-up of Random Muslim Violence thus far during the two decades of the 'War on Terror'. Which makes today's multi-site attacks all the more strange.

The manufactured 'clash of civilizations' continues...

Updates 22 April 2019

Another bomb has been found near Colombo airport. Police have defused it and the airport was put into lockdown.

And another one still was found today in a van outside St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Colombo, scene of carnage yesterday. It apparently detonated as police prepared to defuse it:

Denmark's richest man has lost 3 of his 4 children to the explosion at one of the hotels hit during yesterday's mega-terror attack.

Police have reported finding 87 bomb detonators at the main bus station in Colombo. Clearly, whoever carried this out, had a LOT of financial backing in order to do so.

Meanwhile, questions are being asked about why this warning, issued 10 days before the attacks, failed to prevent them from happening:

The current death toll has jumped to 290, with about 500 wounded. 32 of those are thought to be foreigners, including American, British, Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Danish, Moroccan, Dutch, Pakistan and Portuguese nationals. A total of 24 suspects have been rounded up, and all of them are apparently Sri Lankan nationals.

However, the country's health minister has said:
"We do not believe these attacks were carried out by a group of people who were confined to this country.
He also stated that there was "an international network," without which the attacks "could not have succeeded."

There have still been no claims of responsibility for the attacks...

The US State Department has piped up to warn that the terrorists are planning further attacks in Sri Lanka. It provided no information about why it believes this to be the case, so we can only presume it's because the US government is in contact with the terrorists.

Here's an RT summary of the sites hit so far:

Sixty of America's biggest companies from the Fortune 500 list, including IBM, Netflix, General Motors and Chevron, managed to avoid paying a dime in income taxes on their whopping profits last year.

After the explosive report on how Jeff Bezos' Amazon used tax loopholes and paid nothing in taxes for two years in a row, the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) revealed that many more US companies did the same thing absolutely legally in 2018.

They include 60 major firms from different sectors of the US economy from retail to oil and gas. For example, Delta Air Lines paid nothing to Uncle Sam despite recording over $5 billion in profits. Energy major Chevron and automotive giant General Motors also paid zero tax, with each having earned more than $4 billion last year.

In total, the listed companies zeroed out federal income taxes on $79 billion in US pretax income, according to ITEP findings. And instead of paying $16.4 billion in taxes, these corporations enjoyed a net corporate tax rebate of $4.3 billion.

Comment: They literally are the government now, directly subsidizing themselves from the public treasury.

Best of the Web: The Saker interviews Dmitry Orlov

Dmitry Orlov
Dmitry Orlov
If I had to characterize the current international situation using only one word, the word "chaos" would be a pretty decent choice (albeit not the only one). Chaos in the Ukraine, chaos in Venezuela, chaos everywhere the Empire is involved in any capacity and, of course, chaos inside the US. But you wouldn't know that listening to the talking heads and other "experts" who serve roughly the same function for the Empire as the orchestra did on the Titanic: to distract from the developing disaster(s) for a long as possible.

I decided to turn to the undisputed expert on social and political collapse, Dmitry Orlov whom I have always admired for his very logical, non-ideological, comparative analyses of the collapse of the USSR and the US. The fact that his detractors have to resort to crude and, frankly, stupid ad hominems further convinces me that Dmitry's views need to be widely shared. Dmitry very kindly agreed to reply to my questions in some detail, for which I am most grateful. I hope that you will find this interview as interesting as I did.

Best of the Web: Massive pro-Assange protest erupts in Ecuador's capital - President Lenin quashes it with riot police

Quito police riot
© RuptlyAssange protest in the streets of Quito, Ecuador
Riot police have attacked scores of people who flooded onto the streets of Ecuador's capital and branded their president a "traitor." Protesters were venting anger at the decision to hand Julian Assange over to the UK.

The massive rally in Quito was held to voice unease over the role Ecuador played in arranging for Julian Assange's arrest last week in London. The situation became more tense when police - wearing heavy riot gear - clashed with protesters, using batons to chase them down the street.

A Ruptly video shows some protesters being beaten and taken to the ground amid the demonstration.

Comment: A SOTT reader in Quito, Ecuador informs us that:
Approximately 20,000 citizens of all ages and backgrounds - although especially lower income workers and middle class social-media users - took part in a peaceful protest.

The people were seriously pissed! Chants and cries inundated the streets:
"Traitor! Traitor!... Free Julian Assange... You betrayed our Sovereignty!... Out with the Son of a Bitch!... Lenin Moreno, You're going down!"
There were a considerable amount of activists with Anon Guy Fawkes masks. The historical center was made inaccessible by riot police and at around 7:30pm, some of the younger men couldn't contain their indignation and things got violent, from both sides: stone throwing, tear-gas bombs, swinging batons...

At the moment of this writing, the privately-owned mass media has kept the general public seriously misinformed of international reactions to Assange's arrest event...

From RT: Roger Waters slams UK as accomplice of US Empire in Assange saga:
"To think that the UK has become such a willing accomplice and satellite of the American Empire that it would do such a thing in contravention with all laws, moral, ethical, and actual legal restrictions is absolutely, stunningly appalling and makes me ashamed to be an Englishman.

"If we let the UK get away with allowing him to be extradited to the United States, we allow the United States government, at their whim, to torture him and to detain him possibly for the rest of his life."

Best of the Web: Chief architect of Notre Dame: 'We installed new detection system in 2010, and completely rewired the cathedral, so the fire wasn't caused by electrical short-circuit'

mouton archtiect engineer notre dame
Former chief architect/engineer of Notre Dame Cathedral, who oversaw renovation of its electrical wiring and installed a modern fire detection sytem in 2010
French media reports citing an interview with the former French Inspector-General for Historic Monuments Benjamin Mouton, who oversaw the installation of state-of-the-art fire prevention systems in the Notre Dame Cathedral in 2010, and who was responsible for the building from 2000 to 2013, cast doubt on today's leak to the Associated Press that the fire was likely caused by an electrical short-circuit.

Benjamin Mouton was interviewed live on TV on Monday evening as the fire continued to burn the 850-year-old symbol of French culture and history. Here's what he had to say:
"I don't understand this at all. The fire's spread is extremely curious. With really old oak like that, it's super-hard, so you'd need a lot of smaller wood to first get the fire hot enough for the oak beams to burn.

In 2010 we replaced all the electrical wiring, so there's no way this was sparked by a short-circuit. We put new wiring in place according to modern standards. And we went even further; we installed state-of-the-art fire protection and detection systems in the cathedral.

At all times, there are always two men on standby in the Cathedral, day and night, to go investigate anything the moment an alarm goes off, then if necessary to call the fire emergency services.

I am really stunned that this [the fire] has happened. It's incomprehensible."

Best of the Web: Notre Dame Cathedral worker claims Paris' largest church was DELIBERATELY set on fire

Notre Dame fire
The famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris is on fire, with one worker claiming that the blaze was deliberately set.

The roof of the historic building has completely collapsed.

"The cause is not yet clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work," reports the BBC.

However, TIME columnist Christopher J. Hale tweeted, "A Jesuit friend in Paris who works in #NotreDame told me cathedral staff said the fire was intentionally set."

Flashback Best of the Web: Saint-Sulpice in Paris was DELIBERATELY set on fire - ANOTHER attempt to set church ablaze was made 3 days prior

saint-sulpice
Paris' second-largest church was DELIBERATELY set on fire last month
According to the latest available information, accidental cause has been ruled out by investigators one day after the Saint-Sulpice church fire in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Investigations are continuing

In the aftermath of the Saint-Sulpice fire, the investigators have already drawn some conclusions. Our sources say that the incident began Sunday at around 1:30pm, at an entrance to the church overlooking Palatine Street in the 6th arrondissement, and that its cause was "human" and "deliberate."

"The near-disaster occurred close to a spot where a homeless person's clothes were stored - though this person was not present at that time," said our source. This same source stated that "accidental origin of an electrical or technical nature, or negligence, have been discarded."

"It's now a question of whether the perpetrator is someone who isn't all there in the head, or has some sort of mental instability. There are known homeless persons who come often, but they are typically peaceful," comments another source.

Comment: Saint-Sulpice church remains open. But after what just happened to Notre Dame cathedral, for how much longer?

Something is clearly going on here. Notre Dame is Paris' largest church (cathedral), and Saint-Sulpice is its second-largest.

We're not aware of any further information from officials in France about what took place at the Saint-Sulpice. It's as if they caught someone doing it, discovered who they were, then covered up for them.

Given this precedent just three weeks before Notre Dame, it's reasonable to suspect that it too was deliberately targeted.

Manufactured 'clash of civilizations/religions', anyone?
