Update: Lightning kills 32 in two Indian states within a day

At least 32 people have been killed following lightning strikes in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, reports say.

Twenty-three people died in seven districts of Andhra Pradesh. Nine people were killed in the eastern state of Orissa.

Most of the people who died were working on farms during torrential rains on Sunday, reports said.

Lightning strikes are common in India during heavy monsoon rains.

In Andhra Pradesh, the deaths occurred in Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, East Godavari, Anantapur and Srikakulam districts. At least six women were among those who died.

In a freak instance of multiple lightning-strikes, 19 people were killed in five Andhra Pradesh districts on Sunday, even as women cricket teams of Andhra Pradesh and Tripura had a narrow squeak in Guntur where a fire-bolt struck a tree next to the ground they were having a practice match. This is the first time in the state's recent history that so many people have been killed by lightning on a single day.

Nellore district bore the brunt of nature's fury with six deaths, followed by Prakasam and Krishna with four each. Three deaths were reported from Guntur and two from East Godavari as the southwest monsoon, which had been playing truant so far, turned vigorous on Sunday because of low pressure, bringing heavy rains. The downpour was accompanied by lightning and caught people working in the farms unawares.

Fist-sized hail and winds in excess of 75mph cause chaos in city of Naples

This incredible footage shows how a terrifying hail of biblical-sized hailstones caused chaos in the Italian city of Naples .

In a scene right out of a disaster movie, the hailstones, some of them as big as fists, smashed windows, injured people and caused traffic chaos as they engulfed entire nighbourhoods. The hail was accompanied by ferocious winds in excess of 75 mph.

Autumn kicked off from where summer ended as heavy downpours and freak hailstorms were reported Tuesday - as this dramatic footage from a Birmingham street shows.

Torrents of water gushed down Norrington Road in Northfield following a thick, white scattering of hailstones on Tuesday evening.

"It was like a river had burst its banks nearby, it was on a biblical level," said Paul Rigby, who captured the incredible moment on his mobile phone outside his home. "The downpour lasted about half an hour, I couldn't believe my eyes."

Lightning has also claimed three more precious lives on Sunday in Nabarangpur district in south Odisha.

While two persons got killed in Temra village under Kosaguda block, one person was killed and five injured by lightning in Chhatanbeda under Umerkote on the same day.

As reported earlier, as many as five persons have already been killed and three injured due to lightning at two different places in Odisha on Sunday.

While three women labourers have reportedly been killed and one injured at Pendrakhol under Riamal police limits in Deogarh district in western Odisha, two died of a family in Malkangiri district in western Odisha.

Two children of the same family have been reportedly injured, as per reports.

While father and daughter of the family got killed by lightning, brother and sister have been injured, said sources.

In the Deogarh case, the three women who got struck by lightning were working at a stone crusher unit.

Three people struck dead by lightning in India

Three persons were struck dead by lightning in separate incidents at Sattenapalli mandal on Friday.

Two farm labourers -- Bollapalli Mariyamma (43) and Ekula Nagaratnamma (50) were killed after being struck by lightning. Revenue officials said there was a spell of heavy rain in the rural parts of the Sattenapalli and the incident took place while the women were engaged in farm work.

In another incident, a farmer Popuru Venkateswarlu belonging to Batluru village was struck dead by lightning.

The revenue and police officials after conducting the post-mortem handed over the bodies to the relatives of the deceased.

Lightning hits whiskey factory, creates 'firenado' in Kentucky

The Weather Channel said a firenado required a very rare set of circumstances to combine at the right time
A Jim Beam warehouse in Kentucky was struck by lightning releasing 800,000 gallons of bourbon into a nearby lake. Then, the lake was hit by a 'firenado' setting the inflammable liquid alight.

The firenado was caused when a bolt of lighting hit the ground setting a fire which was in the path of a tornado, which sucked up the flames, creating a terrifying spiralling inferno.

A video of the dramatic scenes has been viewed more than four million times on the internet.

Flash flood hits Menorca and egg-sized hailstones strike Aragon, Spain

Heavy rain struck the island of Menorca and caused dangerous flooding in the streets.

Tourists had to take refuge in bars and restaurants to avoid being swept away by flash floods as thunderous rain hit the island.


The Spanish region has been decimated by adverse weather in recent days as hailstones the size of eggs rained down on the northern Spanish region of Aragon.


Storms have affected a wide area of the country following weeks of scorching sunshine.

Mahon in Menorca suffered more than 50 litres per square metre of rainfall in the space of a few hours.

Waterspout seen off the coast of Point Grey in Vancouver, Canada

Instagram user @tlcrodeostar posted this picture of a funnel cloud spotted over Richmond Friday, a rare occurence in Metro Vancouver according to Environment Canada.

A waterspout was spotted in open water just off the coast of the Vancouver Westside earlier this morning.

According to Environment Canada, the unusual weather occurrence, paired with a brief period of torrential rain, happened at approximately 10 a.m.

The federal agency has issued a marine-based waterspout watch warning for the South Coast due to a potent low pressure system. The notice says waterspouts are possible today over the Strait of Georgia, Howe Sound and Haro Strait. The marine-based warning is in effect until 5 p.m. today.

Lightning strikes kill 13 in Uganda

Lightning struck at a football match at Kere Primary School grounds in Kween District last Tuesday evening, killing seven people while six others were injured and are admitted.

Police confirmed that six people of Kere and Kwosir villages in Kwosir Sub-county in Kween District were admitted with serious injuries, and arrangements had been made to transport some of them to Mbale regional hospital by last night.

One of the survivors, Mr Nathan Cherukut, said the incident happened at about 4.50pm at the climax of a football game where people had braved the rains to watch the match between Kwosir and Kere villages.

Mr Yasin Siwa, a witness told Daily Monitor that the deceased were watching the match when the lightning struck.
