Massive waterspout filmed off Dundee Beach, Australia

The huge waterspout was found off the coast of the Northern Territory about 11am on Sunday
A huge waterspout off the coast of the Northern Territory had locals standing in the rain with their phones out.

Tony Mashman filmed the spout, which occurred about 11am on Sunday off Dundee Beach - 125km southwest of Darwin - for just over two minutes, and at no point did it show any sign of slowing.

The swirl of the water being sucked into the sky is clearly visible as it joins thick dark clouds in the sky.

'I've never seen anything like that in my life,' said Tony's wife Heidi.

It's one of a number of waterspouts over the last few days, according to Tristan Meyers, a meteorologist from Weatherzone, who said there were more spotted of the coast of Townsville on Monday.

The weather phenomenon is not as rare or unique as you might think, either. Mr Meyers says waterspouts are simply tornadoes over water.

'The only reason it looks different is because tornadoes over land throw up dust and debris, and over water it throws up water,' he said.

A severe thunderstorm on the Mexican side of the Texas Big Bend grew to an estimated height of 68,000 feet on Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Antonio, Texas.

This is about twice the height of the typical cruising altitude of a large commercial jetliner, which is generally above 30,000 feet. The tops of this storm also reached a height of more than twice that of the summit of Mount Everest (29,029 feet).

According to weather.com meteorologist Tom Moore, who has been watching storms on satellite more than 30 years, "The supercell towered as high as I've seen in years."

Large tornado that raked northern Kansas lasted '10 times longer than the typical twister'

tornado near Niles, Kansas
© The Associated PressA tornado drops two mile northeast of Niles, Kan., on Wednesday. The large tornado that the National Weather Service said was on the ground for about 90 minutes damaged or destroyed about 20 homes in northern Kansas.

The tornado that raked northern Kansas stayed on the ground about 10 times longer than the typical twister.

A tornado that raked northern Kansas for 90 minutes was impressive both for its classic "wedge" shape and its sheer endurance - staying on the ground about 10 times longer than the typical twister.

The Storm Prediction Center said most tornadoes last less than 10 minutes and stay on the ground for about 3 1/2 miles. Wednesday's storm covered 26 miles from near Niles and southeast of Chapman, but was moving so slowly it lasted an hour and a half and was so isolated that other storms never interrupted its air flow.

The SPC said the legendary, long-lived tornadoes talked about from a century ago were most likely a series of storms along one general path.

The twister that hit Kansas tracked eastward at an average speed of 17.3 mph. The slow forward motion gave forecasters plenty of time to warn people living in the area to either get out of the storm's way or take shelter.

The National Weather Service at Topeka warned Chapman's 1,400 residents at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday that the storm was 4 miles west. At the storm's pace, that gave people 15 minutes to prepare. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths.

Comment: There were over 25 reports of tornadoes across five states of the U.S. Great Plains on Tuesday, including a rare 'triple touchdown'.

Weather Network Storm Hunter Jaclyn Whittal stated, "What a day! A day that we may not see for a very long time. We saw multiple tornadoes on this cell that started in Minneola, Kansas and produced every type of tornado type (shape wise) that you could ever imagine."

Lightning strikes increase tenfold over Azerbaijan

Lightning strike
Clouds may look very innocent, like fluffy bed in the sky, but they actually sometimes can create the wondrous effect of lightning. Although lightning is accepted as one of the most spectacular sights in nature, it remains one of the most terrible and unpredictable natural phenomena.

At any given time, there are about 2,000 thunderstorms raging across the globe and 100 lightning strikes to earth per second, affecting about six times a year its each square meter.

Lightning has long been studied by scientists around the world, who try to recreate this phenomenon in the laboratory, measure the voltage and temperature. Nevertheless, today science know not much more about the nature of lightning, than let's say 300 years ago.

Nobody can name the real cause of lightning flashes, whilst it's known that lightning is an electric current, and feels like, for example, sparks when you take off your sweater, but on a much bigger scale. It is known that lightning is a powerful electric discharges in the atmosphere, carrying a negative charge on the land value of a few tens of pendant.

About $45,000 worth of cattle was lost when lightning struck in McCook County Wednesday night, and the Moody County Sheriff's Department is using it as an example to remind people the dangers of lightning.

A Moody County Sheriff's Department Facebook page post Thursday showed dead cattle surrounding a metal bale feeder that was struck by one bolt of lightning, killing all 21.

"This is a very strong reminder of what lightning can do," the post, which has since garnered more than 35,000 shares as of Thursday evening, said. "If you start to see lightning and hear thunder, you need to get out of the open."

The post reminded people to stay off of lakes and golf courses and other outdoor activities if possible during severe storms and that standing under a tree is also not a safe place.

The National Lightning Safety Institute says when close to lightning to avoid water, high ground open spaces, metal objects including wires, fences, machinery, motors power tools and trees.
