Hurricane Florence upgraded to Category 4 storm as Gordon moves inland

Hurricane Florence

Florence, the first major storm of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, was upgraded to a Category 4 storm Wednesday as forecasters warned it could cause "life-threatening" surf and rip current conditions in Bermuda later this week.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Florence's maximum sustained winds are estimated to be 130 miles per hour. The storm is centered about 1,295 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and is moving northwest at 13 mph.

Forecasters have said they expect Florence to weaken somewhat over the next couple of days, but the storm is predicted to remain a powerful hurricane through early next week.

The National Hurricane Center said that the swells generated by Florence would begin to affect Bermuda on Friday. There are no watches or warnings currently in effect for the U.S.

While Florence gathered pace in the Atlantic, the remains of Tropical Depression Gordon spread bands of heavy rain across parts of the South as it swirled over Mississippi.

Japan hit by strongest storm for 25 years, at least 10 killed as Typhoon Jebi leaves trail of destruction - UPDATE

Meteorological agency warns Typhoon Jebi could trigger landslides and flooding

Japan is bracing for flooding and landslides after what could be the strongest typhoon to hit the country in a quarter of a century made landfall on Tuesday.

Evacuation advisories were issued for more than 300,000 people as the wind and rain from Typhoon Jebi began to intensify on Tuesday afternoon. Most of those advised to leave their homes and head to 1,500 temporary shelters were in the western port city of Kobe.

The meteorological agency said in a televised warning the system could trigger violent winds, landslides and flooding in the southern and southwestern parts of the archipelago, as well as high tides, lightning and tornadoes.

The prime minister, Shinzo Abe, urged residents to "evacuate early" and cancelled a planned trip to Kyushu in Japan's south-west to oversee the government's response.

Television footage showed waves pounding the coastline amid warnings of high tides later in the day.

While the typhoon is not expected to make a direct hit on Tokyo, its path will take it over the cities of Osaka and Kyoto before it heads out to sea, according to the meteorological agency.

Comment: UPDATE: The Independent reports:
At least six people have died and more than 120 were injured amid strong winds and heavy rain after typhoon Jebi made landfall in Japan.

More than one million people were ordered to evacuate and nearly 800 flights were cancelled as the powerful storm hit the country with winds of up to 129mph (208km/h).

Jebi, whose name means "swallow" in Korean, was briefly classed as a super typhoon.

In the hard-hit city of Osaka, high seas have poured into Kansai International Airport, flooding one of its two runways and cargo storage facilities and forcing the airport to shut down.

Wind gusts of up to 129mph were recorded in one part of Shikoku, the smallest main island, with forecasts for gusts as high as 135mph (216km/h).

Typhoon Jebi caused a fuel tanker weighing more than 2,500 tonnes to crash into the bridge connecting Izumisano City to a nearby airport. No one was injured in the incident.

UPDATE: BBC on 5th Sept. reports:
At least 10 people have been killed by Typhoon Jebi, the worst storm to hit Japan in 25 years.

Jebi left a trail of destruction across the west of the country, hitting major cities like Kyoto and Osaka.

Flights, trains and ferries were cancelled but thousands of passengers stranded at Osaka's international airport have since been evacuated.

As the winds slow down and move north, people are being urged to stay alert for landslides and floods.

At least 300 people have been injured as a result of the typhoon, according to government spokesman Yoshihide Suga.

As of Wednesday morning, evacuation advisories had been issued for more than 1.2 million people.

More than 30,000 people were given stronger but still not mandatory evacuation orders, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said

Footage on social media showed the 100-metre (328-foot) tall ferris wheel in Osaka spinning rapidly in the storm despite being switched off.

More than two million households experienced blackouts during the storm and schools and companies in the affected area remained shut.

Nearly 800 flights were cancelled, including international flights at Nagoya and Osaka.

On Wednesday, travellers stranded at Osaka's Kansai International Airport were being ferried by boat to another local airport.

As many as 3,000 people had been stranded at the airport, which is built on an artificial island, after a tanker crashed into the bridge connecting it with the mainland.

The airport had seen its runways and basements flooded and will remain closed all Wednesday.

A hulking tanker ship smashed right into a bridge linking Osaka Kansai airport with the Japanese mainland. The collision happened as Japan is being battered by the largest typhoon in 25 years.

In a dramatic video, the ship can be seen dashed against the bridge. The vessel, which weighs more than 2,500 tons, did extensive damage to the bridge, but none of its crew were injured.

Further inland, the airport itself was hit with a deluge of rainfall, and its runways totally submerged. All flights have been suspended.

Typhoon Jebi made landfall in Japan on Tuesday, and is the strongest storm to batter the country in 25 years. At least one person has been killed and several others injured as Jebi brought violent winds to the west of the country. Meteorological agencies have warned of the danger of landslides, flooding, high tides and tornadoes.

Nearly 9 inches of rain that pounded Manhattan, Kan., overnight and into the day Monday caused major flash flooding, forcing more than 300 people to evacuate their homes. Some 750 homes still lack power, the city of Manhattan reports.

"We're saying it is a 500-year event, perhaps a 700-, 800-year event," said Manhattan's Municipal Government Manager Mark Fehr at a 2 p.m. press conference Monday.

Aerial photographs posted by the Riley County Police show buildings flooded nearly to their roofs. Two emergency shelters have been established, one at Cico Park and a second at Bramlage Coliseum.

'"It is estimated that about 300 individuals have been impacted as of now," Fehr said. The Army Corp. of Engineers, he said, reported 8.9 inches of rain had fallen in the area, causing Wildcat Creek to overflow its banks. Three bridges were overcome, two on Kansas 18 and the bridge on Scenic Drive.
